They are unbeaten for 7 league games in a row. Eventually they will lose a match and I hope this will be the one. We have no reason not to beat them.

If Van de Beek isn't good enough to play against Southampton he's got no business being at United.

it's insane people think he can't handle playing against teams with a semi decent press. He a very good player and I don't understand the reservations people have.

Very well said. The guy is a top player and anyone who doesn’t think he can hold his own against Southampton needs to get a grip.

Southampton is the type of team that Ole will love playing against. They play with a suicidal pressing game that suits our counter attacking approach. This game can go like the rb Leipzig game or like the Brighton game. With Ole unusual amount of luck and good fortune, it will be hard to see us lose this one.

Problem is if he plays in the PL, especially against Sou there'll be always at least one player chasing him. While others blocking his passing options. Sou is quite good with their pressing, according to the last time we met them.

That pass to Mata was in a counter situation, when he had an option to pass forward. I didn't say he wouldn't pass forward if he has an option. I was just afraid he'd have almost none next match.
I don't understand. Do we have another midfielder better than VdB at evading the press? If you say VdB will only play the sideways and back passes then I can't imagine what Mctominay will do. If you say VdB can't handle the pace of the game or isn't strong enough then forget about Fred Matic and Pogba.

Southampton isn’t just semi decent press. They are one of the best pressing team in the league as they have very hard working players and high press manager.

But I agree VDB is a player who knows how to play against pressing so this shouldn’t be a problem if he starts. Although, I hope we don’t start Mata. I don’t playing against pressing team suits him.

This. He may not have played as much as many hoped but he's no slouch. And Southampton are no prime Barca either.

Its not about the player in itself (for me at least), its just he hasnt alot of experience in that role with our team and in PL in itself. Alot of good players takes long time to adjust to PL .

And how open we were with him and Fred against a far lesser side than Southampton. I dont understand where he had has lots of experience with high pressing teams either.

Tbh of course I can't be sure whether VDB would beat Sou pressing. Problem is, if he wouldn't he won't be able to help us to move the ball forward and he'll be a liability when we have to defend. He's slow, weak and doesn't have a good tackle. Playing McT there won't help us move the ball forward either but at least I know he'd do well enough when we have to defend. So it's just too risky for my liking to play VDB this match.

We can set up to counter and use Mctominay and Fred. I think thats the safer option
Yeah that's what I've been trying to say. I like VDB but imo it's a bit risky to play him this match. Not only for the result but his confidence as well. You shouldn't introduce a new player from another league to the PL by throwing him into a difficult match and hope everything would go well. Unless you have no choice. Like Bruno.

Imo Ole has managed VDB pretty well so far by playing him in the CL where he clearly has plenty of experience. And slowly introduce him to the PL, where he has pretty much no experience.

Fred Pogba and Matic can't start this game. Fred and Pogba will lose possession clumsily due to their organised high press and Matic can't match their energy. Pogba too again. I'd go for this

    DDG
    Awb Lindelof Maguire Telles
    Mctominay VdB.
    Greenwood Bruno Rashford
    Martial
I think we have a squad with variety of skillets that all Ole has to do mainly is get the right 11 able to counter the opponents style of play and motivate their asses
I'd go with this lineup. I think McT and VDB are good against the press and it's time for that front 4 to come together and perform once again.

We need Martial to work harder and find some form and it's a bit risky playing VBD in a game like this, but those one-touch passes are the best way to sort out a press.

McT seems to be injured so wont be a choice for this game, unless Ole is doing shady intelligence stuff again

When did United become about taking the 'safer option'?

That's the antithesis of the club, to me.

I also don't see starting McTominay as a safer option than Van de Beek. I view it as a negative step and ceding control of the game to Southampton before a ball is kicked.

Personally I think it would be unlikely. He surely needs to get a bit fitter first.
It seems strange reading through this thread at the amount of you who are worried about Saints. Is it about where you see Man Utd are at the moment or about how you think Saints have improved?

Tempting to play with Van De Beek as a false 9 to beat their press and have the wingers get in behind, but McTominay is out. Otherwise woulda said:

    Rashford-----VDB-------Greenwood
    -------------------Bruno-----------------------
    ----------Fred--------McTominay--------
    Telles--Maguire--Tuanzebe-Williams
    ------------------De Gea----------------------

Though I guess I'd now wanna see VDB alongside Fred and Cavani up top and Martial up top. James and Cavani to come on after an hour for fresh legs.

Agreed with the latter part. We probably need to sell Pogba and buy a proper DM that can pass this summer and then he can be paired with Fred when we want a defensive pair and with Van De Beek when we want to just control the ball. Van De Beek will still get games as the backup 10 to Bruno, and Mctominay will be the backup for this mythical DM (2014 Matic would fit the bill ironically) and to Fred, so enough games for the 5.

    I like that formation.

I think everyone knows we can name
10 players for Saturday. It’s right wing where we have a desicion unless martial plays there and cavani goes up top.

Southampton will press us like monsters hence why I think Pogba may play in the right forward position if fit.

    We have momentum.

    Greenwood Cavani VDB. Good subs.

It really isn't a game for Juan Mata. Southampton press and run like mad men. They might actually be one of the worst opponents for him. If Ole picks him I'd be hugely surprised and hugely worried about the result.

I think Donny will start and we might see him and Bruno taking turns drifting out to the right. Basically we won't have anyone out there.

Yep, McTominay and Pogba are out injured. Wan-Bissaka and Lindelof trained today so good chance they'll be fit for Sunday. Shaw is doing some individual training but not training with the team yet.

He hasn't done well against anyone for more than a year.

He was good against Newcastle a few weeks back despite the low block and obviously had a nice cameo in Istanbul. He has played very well for Wales on a consistent basis. I don't want him starting as we have better options and he is unlikely to be more than a bit part player for us for the rest of his time here but to say he hasn't done well for more than a year is factually incorrect.

Could have done with McTominay for this. Midfield is a worry. Tough game.

Not what I wanted to hear whilst sipping on my ovaltine. Ings and Redmond are out for them I guess.

Why do they call it Ovaltine? The mug is round. The jar is round. They should call it Roundtine.

Have you actually watched Pogba for us in 2020? He's been shocking. We won't miss him.

VDB is an improvement on him for me. Not only does he try harder, he doesn't lose the ball in dangerous areas. Last time we played Southampton Pogba had an absolute shocker and his mistake led to one of their goals.

I don’t know. May be they just expect tough match and this can be 50;50 means likely draw, draw is always like a lose after all.

I’m not too worried to be honest. I can‘t find a reason why United must not win against Southampton without Ings. Although you are unbeaten in 7 games does give me bit anxiety.

If Greenwood is fit he’s probably coming back on this right side. I don’t think we would start the same team in the middle. The only one who can play like that is Fred, the others need some kind of rotation but I think Bruno will start to win the game early.

I think this has draw written all over it. Going 2-2 in a very entertaining game. Would like to see VDB and Cavani start, but it will probably Martial as CF and Fred/McT as the 2 DM

If anything playing Pogba is the worst hope you want to have against pressing and work rate team. Pressing is his weakness. He struggled last time 2-2 few months ago.

We are going to counter-attack. I guess play the team that best suits that. This is a game tailor-made for James if Rashford is out.
