Fully expect us to lose (or draw at best) just given how our rivals performed today and how we always make it hard for ourselves…

The way the results have gone today I would take a nervy 0-1!

The results today have opened up a hole of opportunity, we need to pound it with a raging member!

This is a great opportunity to create some distance, hoping the boys won't feck it up :p

Let's bench RVP, play Rooney, Falcao and beat the hell out of Soton

We do not need to rest anyone or be obliged to give players games. Though the next month is very important, putting distance between us and Arsenal, Spurs, Everton and Liverpool is what counts.

Only change I would make against Southampton is Rooney for Wilson.

With Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool all dropping points, this is a MUST win game now. This is the kind of games we NEED to win.

We can leapfrog Southampton to 3rd place in this match and be on course chase a Manchester City side without their talisman Aguero who hopefully is out for a while (as much as I like him)

And what's the point going for top 2, you might as well be challenging for the title.

So, it looks like the title race is on if we beat Southampton...

Obviously a win would be great, and there's every chance we will get a win, but a draw wouldn't be the end of the world, considering everyone around us bar City (as it stands) dropped points against much easier opponents, and considering we still have loads of injuries.

We will drop points. It will be too go to be true for us to win and Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool to drop points

I am sure they are 4 pts ahead of us

This game will really tell us definitely what a Van Gaal United team is all about. Do they smell blood like Fergie's teams?

After all rivals, except city dropping points, these are the situations we want to be in and so we need to win this game for sure. These situations wont happen too often and we should definitely capitalize on it. C'mon lads you can do it. We believe in LVG.

I would take ugly winning this on.

Great position to put ourselves even higher up the table, must not miss that opportunity!

Oh, definitely. I love it when we play great football but I'd take ugly winning all season if it gets the job done. This year is about getting our core players used to each other and getting back in the CL where we belong. Next season can be about doing it pretty.

This United side is work in progress.

We've earned some luck to go our way, players are still getting used to eachother as well as so many times mentioned 'philosophy'.

Next season will be better from the start, this one should provide top 4 spot at any cost, as well as team selection, and while doing so getting 3 points in situation like this is job getting done as you've said it!

    A must win now
    Really mate??

I would rather say it's a massive massive opportunity to go away from Arsenal/Liverpool/Tottenham, Southampton have big injury problems for the first time of the season and to sit on the 3rd place instead of the 4th place is a little better feeling

Don't ge me wrong i think we should still Attack Attack Attack!!!! if it's 1-1 after the 90.min in this match but a draw wouldn't have a negative effect in table for us

But a 5th win in a row would be awesome....the other teams would really start fear us again

So all in all i would say this match is a "Massive massive opportunity"!!!!!

Yeh, I don't think a draw would be bad. Obviously a win should be the only focus and rightly so, regardless of how good they have been doing, we should be beating Southampton. A win would be great, to gain a point would be good enough.

@Raoul Would love to see that team.

Any news on Rafael for this one? If he's fit that that's the only change I'd like to see.

He's apparently been in training this week. Doubt he's match fit yet, so if we see him it would probably be as a sub.

It's a must win for those reasons, get a good gap on the other top 4 rivals.

Think Falcao has to start. Whenever he has come on he has looked lively. He was also extremely unlucky not to score vs hull the other week. It would be better if we substituted him off rather than on imo

Would like to see Mata and Herrera start, I think they have a great dynamic and understanding between them, along with Fellaini and Carrick to cover. I can see why we would choose someone pacey over Herrera or Mata though considering the trouble Southampton had with Arsenal.

Its a "nice to win". Not a must-win.
If we lose or draw, I'd say that we are still favourites for 3rd place.
If we do win, then its a bonus and we take 3rd place on Monday.

If this were the final game of the season and were in 5th, playing the 4th place team who were 2 points ahead of us - this would be a must-win game.
This is not even close to a must-win game.

Falcao is a good bet to start after his previous cameo. That last one was LvG getting him match fit, which he should be now. Mata could start in Di Maria's role.

Yeah I think he could be good for 50-65 minutes which would be great for him.

Can't imagine RVP, Rooney and Falcao in the first XI .. we need a more "pace player" faster contribution with the ball, so we should start just with RVP in front, and bring Mata instead Falcao .. he can get 30 mins depends from the game and the result and after this game, put him in fire against Liverpool.

    Would like to see

    ----------------DDG-----------------
    Valencia----Smalling---Evans----Rojo
    --------Fellaini------Carrick---------
    Herrera------Rooney------Mata
    ------------RVP-------------------------

I would be happy with Van Persie/Falcao, Rooney & Mata or Van Persie, Falcao & Rooney

Southampton were so tired against Arsenal in the last 20 minutes (Well it's hard to play against three top clubs in 7 days :) ) so Wilson from the bench in the last 10-20 minutes (if the match is a draw) against a tired Southampton team could be great option.

Falcao needs that goal that he's waiting for though.. And he can't keep coming on when we are leading in a match. Agree with Wilson. If we're tieing and need a goal young James wouldn't be bad to bring on against their tired defence. I'm not so worried About their attack tbh.. They've looked quite dire against arsenal and city.. And I believe we have a superior midfield to them.. We should really win this
