Some of the comments in here over Jesse are embarrassing. A new season, same old moaning. He's playing so deal with it.

    So glad we're playing a 433.

We've got a really balanced team. Two top wingers and a top left back and we're up there with the best, in my opinion. Guess that's something Mourinho will want to do in the next few seasons.

That midfield of Pogba, Herrre and Matic is awesome. Be interesting to see how they get on against possibly the best midfield three in the world, in Casemiro, Modric and Kroos.

Only think that worries me, especially if this is a formation we're looking to use for most of the season is Mkhitaryan's form on the right. He's yet to impress me there, and has looked considerably better as an attacking midfielder.

What he needs to do is play in between the lines and find pockets of space, very much like what Lingard does, and is probably the best at doing it for us.

Excited for this. Hope we can give a good account of ourselves.

Lingard looks the best on the right, Hope mkh plays on the left as lingard goes missing on the left.

That mid 3 is very close to on the opposite side.

Glad the MPH is starting together. Good first test for them

Lingard really does stick out in that side. And the left back, though Darmian has been very solid for the most part under Mourinho. Other then that, we have a very good all around team. Love the midfield 3. Expect to see Rashford and Martial both come on at some point. Probably fellaini for Matic as well as he tires.

Isn't Lingard slightly better in defense. If that is the team strategy today, then it makes sense.

Personally I dont think it is a horror to play Lingard.
I would agree with this. Martial is better in games where we will have the majority of the ball and chances. Not sure I would want him defending in this game. Bring him on later to add pace.

Interesting lineup. Question now is will be play 4-3-3 or 3-6-1? I think most likely it will be 4-3-3, but with Valencia being more attacking and Darmian being more defensive behind Lingard.

    4-3-3 hopefully. I don't like Pogba as a 10.

I can imagine the both be popping up on both sides, however, I'm yet to see a decent performance from Mkhi on the wing, whether it be on the right or left.

Agree with Mkhitaryan, though the 4-3-3 like this is what I'd expect in big games with Miki on the right or left, so he'll have to adapt for those games. I feel like for most other games we'll only see 2 of Pogba and Herrera/matic, with Miki in the middle, leaving the wings for hopefully martial/rashford, but again, we'll see. It's what I hope Mourinho is planning, and what I think he is as he really wanted Griezmann who would for sure play in that hole behind lukaku.

I obviously hope Lingard performs well and we win (I have to say that disclaimer or some people will think I'll want the team to lose or something stupid) but Mourinho's fascination with Lingard cost us last year as he failed to deliver in the final 3rd time after time..
What were Mata, Miki, Martial, Rashford doing so wonderfully well last season. I think Lingard came of the bench around 14-15 times last season.

    Ye, makes sense.

Lingard is a surprise and rather disappointing inclusion. Not really been much from him in pre season. Good team otherwise.

People who are slating lingard just wont recognise what he brings in and out of posession ,

yes , he needs to improve in final third, but you you to get there first in the build up which lingard is the best at in current crop of options.

reckon he might play Lingard right in this to do a job on Marcelo

    that's what I'd do anyway

No Andreas on the bench really irritates me.

Slightly disappointed that Lingard still starts games for us as I think we should be aiming a bit better. However he does have a great knack of scoring in big games. Other than that, probably the strongest line we could play all things considered.

Feel sorry for Martial. After the kind of pre-season he has had, it would have been a show of confidence from Jose to Martial to show that he trusts him. Instead, we are probably gonna have Lingard playing 60 minutes with almost no attacking imprint on the game. And then, Rashford to subbed in.

Bailly and Jones instead of Lindelof and Smalling, Rashford instead of Lingard and that should be our starting line up against WHU.

This argument about Lingard providing some defensive cover does my head in.

First of all an attacker should be assessed and expected to be an attacker first meaning his offensive capabilities have to be a priority in whether they deserve to start.

Secondly the other players beside can also do their defensive duties with the added bonus of actually contributing in attack.

People have been brainwashed as to accept having a winger whose strongest attribute are defensive related rather than their offensive output.

Why should we always go into big games against rival or even teams inferior to us(no in this case) with a mindset to sideline some of our biggest attacking threats for defensive coverage. Every game we're expected to defend and sit back, can't even expect an ounce of positivity in our play. Down right frustrating.

Lingard has no argument to be starting over all those players far more deserving than him as attacking players. His offensive output are awful but this is Mourinho with his negative mindset.

And yes even if this was a game against Hull but a final Mourinho would have gone with a negative approach. We just can't expect going into game to enjoy them but just to bite nails for 90 minutes as we're defending narrow leads or draws.

I'm just going to stay away from lineups this season as I suck bad at them.

    De Gea,
    Valencia, Lindelof, Smalling, Darmian,
    Matic,
    Herrera, Pogba,
    Mkhitaryan, Lingard,
    Lukaku.

I think it's only fair to Carvajal that Martial gets benched, don't want to trigger his ptsd...

    BBC got no clue:

Half expected Martial owing to his performance against them pre season. I know it's not the same thing, but he's been in good form.

Looking at it, we still have a very good bench to run at the tired legs at the end of the game, Rashford, Martial and Mata.

Jose's probably keeping Martial and Rashford for that fresh legs/pacey introduction when Real tires as his tactics.

Guarantee that Rashford comes on for Lingard 60 odd minutes in. I think it's a good move as it means we can get Marcus on and he'll run full pelt at a tiring defence.

Think people can stop with the 'no he isn't' now when others say Lingard is a first team starter. Martial, Mata and Mkhitaryan are 'squad players', Jesse plays when fit. Which is a terrible indictment of where we are frankly, and I like the kid.
    This.

And while we might need to strengthen, it would be nice to first see Mourinho start using the best of the options he's got rather than his constant Lingard automatic pick for big games.

Em? You're going to have to improve on the quality of your posts

In the match day thread? Lingard continually fails to vindicate his backers. I think they're the ones who need to improve the quality of their posts, or stop being precious about him.
