Because this place is daft. He's a big game player, and offers the defensive work that Martial and Rashford don't. He's was obviously going to start, and deserves to.Think people can stop with the 'no he isn't' now when others say Lingard is a first team starter. Martial, Mata and Mkhitaryan are 'squad players', Jesse plays when fit. Which is a terrible indictment of where we are frankly, and I like the kid.Darmian can defend and had a better pre-season than Blind... No brainer why he is playing

We have to be fair, though. I am not going to say I like this in any way and I am not fond of Mourinho's selection choices but at the end of the day when we won the Europa League final I wasn't thinking 'it would have been better if Fellaini and Darmian didn't start'. I can't even remember the team that day but I remember is we won.

That's where he needs to improve, but our build up with him is the best when you play against a high press proactive posession team to maintain contol of posession. Rest others loose the ball in high press in the build up too many times handing the other team the ball thus forcing us to defend.Tire them out and then bring on the pace for the 2nd halfDisappointed that we aren't using the 3-5-2 and no Pereira but more Lingard.

We've got a really balanced team. Two top wingers and a top left back and we're up there with the best, in my opinion. Guess that's something Mourinho will want to do in the next few seasons.
That midfield of Pogba, Herrre and Matic is awesome. Be interesting to see how they get on against possibly the best midfield three in the world, in Casemiro, Modric and Kroos.
Only think that worries me, especially if this is a formation we're looking to use for most of the season is Mkhitaryan's form on the right. He's yet to impress me there, and has looked considerably better as an attacking midfielder.
What he needs to do is play in between the lines and find pockets of space, very much like what Lingard does, and is probably the best at doing it for us.
Excited for this. Hope we can give a good account of ourselves.

3 years from now he'll be playing for some mid-table team and we'll all be wondering quite how he ever managed to make it here.
Was my feeling a bit also. But he was the standout player during the pre-season, so maybe Jose is just giving him his dues, but I'd still have someone else there. Hopefully he proves us wrong tonight at least.I dont rate Lingard, but he still carries the ball at speed better than anyone else we have, bar maybe Martial, and if we are sitting back and trying to counter, then I can see why he is playing.

shows where we are compared to the elite sides.Isn't Lingard slightly better in defense. If that is the team strategy today, then it makes sense.
Personally I dont think it is a horror to play Lingard.
I obviously hope Lingard performs well and we win (I have to say that disclaimer or some people will think I'll want the team to lose or something stupid) but Mourinho's fascination with Lingard cost us last year as he failed to deliver in the final 3rd time after time.
I hope he has learned from that. Because if we have a repeat of last season's league performances and lack of goalscoring Mou could conceivably get the sack and it'd be utterly stupid if it happens because he failed to get the best out of his other attacking talents.
We had the same arguments about Cleverley and Gibson, and there were people saying even they were good squad players then. I guess some United fans are happy to accept mediocrity.
