Would have liked to see Mata and Januzaj in but it looks a good team otherwise.
I say looks because none of us have a notion of how it's actually going to look.

    Could be:

    De Gea
    Smalling Evans Rojo Blind
    Rooney Herrera
    Valencia Di Maria Young
    Fellaini

    ... for all we know.

I'd like to see Fellaini play really advanced. He doesn't do us much good trying to link up and play football. We want him in the box trying to get on to headers and knock it down to Rooney.

Also, why are people sure it's 4 at the back?

    ----Rooney-Di Maria----
    ----Fellaini-Herrera----
    Young--Blind---Valencia
    --Rojo-Evans-Smalling

or Fellaini and Di Maria flipped is a serious possibility, no?

    If 352 again...

    Rojo - Evans - Smalling
    Valencia - Blind - Young
    Herrera - Fellaini
    Di Maria
    Rooney
Whatever the formation, at least Rooney seems to be up front.

edit: @NoPace beat me by mere seconds

One win in our last 6 away games, against a dogshite QPR side.

Signs aren't great. We desperately need to win.

That's a piss poor Newcastle side. No excuses whatsoever if we fail to win tonight.

If we played Fellaini up front vs Falcao up front for every match for the rest of the season I genuinely think Fellaini would net twice as many goals.

I agree. I'm not a fan, overall, but there's no denying he's looked sharp in the final 3rd for a while now. More assists too with the knockdowns.

I still find it inexplicable though that the only reason Evans plays is because he is better with his left foot than Jones and Smalling.

Considering that Evans has been pretty bad at actually defending which should be you know the important bit.

Agreed. Also, I think it's suprising how long since Mata has started matches for us!

I looked back on our 4-0 win against Newcastle away under Moyes last season, it was our 4th away win in a row. Imagine that, 4 away wins!

Fellaini is a very useful option in a team where most of the players are less physical than the players they are facing. Drop him and put on Mata or Januzaj against the likes of Sissoko and Tiote and we could be in serious trouble. The Herrera-Blind duo is creative enough with Young and Di Maria on the wings i think having Fellaini instead of Mata is a good decision.

I'm saying all these while i am a big, big Mata fanboy.

His physical presence is vastly overrated.

I think we played well at Swansea and we deserved something from that game. If we can deliver a similar or a slightly better performance we have every chance of winning this match.

Krul; Janmaat, Coloccini, Williamson, R.Taylor; Obertan, Sissoko, Abeid, Ameobi; Riviere, Cisse

    -------------Abeid--------
    Taylor-Williamson-Coloccini-Janmaat

I look at that bolded part and I have to question why Mata isn't playing. Surely he'd give Abeid and those extremely slow CB's some trouble with his movement if played basically up front with Rooney?

LVG on why he left out Falcao:

We want to beat the pressure with him. We expect Newcastle to press us, so maybe with Fellaini we will beat the pressure more easily

Maybe he thinks Fellaini can do a specific job...

4-4-1-1/4-3-3/4-2-3-1 are all essentially the same thing. They change depending how the game goes. Fellaini is better as a target man then a midfielder anyways so I'd rather him further up.
I don't want to be watching a long ball game from United though. I'd rather him in midfield putting himself about. Let Herrera feed ADM, Young and Rooney up top.

I like Fellaini because last game we saw Young and Januzaj deliver quite a number of dangerous crosses, with nobody really being able to put a head on them. Fellaini gives us that threat.

We haven't played that game once this season outside of the last 15mn of games.

Will be looking for a much better performance from Di Maria. Hopefully Rooney is up top on his own. Happy enough with the team otherwise. Glad Young gets a start, fully deserves it.

We should beat any team that lines up with Obertan.

A rare away game where I'm almost certain we will win. If we can't beat this pile of shit we might as well pack it all in.

We don't do that though unless we're losing at the end of the game. It's more in there for crosses when we get in advanced positions like against Preston. Which there's nothing wrong with. We put a lot of dangerous balls in the box but Falcao has basically no physical presence anymore, so both in the air for crosses and for passes into him, he's pretty useless. No hold up play and can't out muscle defenders to win headers. Fellaini can do that excellently, and it's much different to hoofing it up to him.

I havent yet worked out how he is going to use Fellaini to beat the pressure. I always thought the best way to handle pressure and pressing was high ball speed 1 and 2 touch passing. Is he thinking of going over the top instead of playing out from the back.?

Hello Damien, is there any chance I can get re-promoted again to the Mains? I have realised the error of my ways regarding posting. The Newbies are a ghost town and not as interesting to post in. Just wanna know if there's a chance to get re-promoted again.

Got no idea who, if any demoted you. Will find out.

Wait. You got promoted and then relegated. I didn't even know that was possible. The Redcafe.net hierarchy can be quite brutal but that's a good thing.

oh wow....Hurray for my own stupidity. I was convinced I would miss half the game and managed to ignore the 1 hour time difference between Norway and England. Good times!

Yeah my score on the scoreboard has changed, just nothing showing here. PM on its way.

To be fair to them, I got upset after the Swansea game two weeks ago and wanted Louis out.

Because we didn't play with 5 at the back for the while, and van Gaal himself spoke that 4 at the back is the way to go.

    de Gea
    Valencia - Smalling - Evans - Rojo
    Herrera - Blind
Di Maria - Fellaini - Young
    Rooney
Agreed in defence, but when in possession it might be more like:

    de Gea
    Smalling - Blind - Evans
    Valencia---------Herrera ------- Rojo
Di Maria ---- Fellaini ---- Young
    Rooney
