Matic is a proper DM, which we've lacked for quite some time. He allows everyone, not just Pogba, to attack more. And it doesn't hurt that he has a shot on him and can make a pass or two as well.

Herrera and Pogba have never worked in a midfield 2 because niether is a DM.

Great half. Glad Lukaku got his goal, that's something out of the way. Very impressed with Matic and Pogba, and Rashford had his silky moments, too. Our defence doing well, as usual, and Phil Jones is leading the way.

Valencia needs to be quicker with his passing, though, and Mkhitaryan needs to up his game, too. Both him and Mata are capable of more.

Hope we don't step off in the second half, and decided to go for it again, instead.

Matic has been very impressive I agree. What about that great defensive play and then unleashing a great pass to set up Pogba who then pirouetted around a tackle with his back to the midfielder. Shame the final ball was overhit. Would have been one of the great goals at OT!

Both can play as a #10 and on the wing although Mata should not. I think he gives them a roaming role but I'm sure Mata prefers to play centrally.

Mata insists on cutting in and taklng up Miki's space, he needs to be more choosey as to when he does it. That said they have actually linked up rather well on a fair few occasions during the half, when they weren't bumping in to one another.

To be fair, when Pep started, prices were a bit higher than when Mourinho started. Would be interesting to see how it is since Pep became a manager. I guess that Pep would still lead.

Matic and Pogba are a pleasure to watch, but tbf we created too few chances. Lukaku definitely deserves praises for putting our probably clear-cut opportunity away. (not counting Mata's failed pass to him)
I was never convinced by Miki, thought he's probably worst at striking the ball among our attackers at the moment and that's not his only problem. Rashford as well was wasteful. Hopefully Martial will get about 20 minutes today.
Was also pleased (and relieved) that Jones got to start instead of Lindelöf.

Pray that Matic doesn't get any serious injury this season as we simply don't have any replacement for him. He totally dominated the midfield. Hope Mourinho use him only in EPL and CL. Rest him for all other cup games.

You look good although it's pretty obvious you're still missing that extra player that will help break down deep defenses. Your counters look terrifying but when West Ham sit deep it's noticeable there's still a lack of ideas and you revert to crossing the ball most of the time.

Don't mean to sound harsh though as that was a very good first half
