I thought he would be ahead of Smalling in the pecking order.So 4-2-3-1 huh? Very attacking line up. I wonder whether it's Mata or Mkhitaryan in the "10" position? Though I suspect it may be fluid and they'll swap a few times. Herrera can feel hard done by, but good line up.We've not played a 442 diamond and people are suggesting we will today
Hmm, I'd be surprised to see Mkhitaryan or Mata playing central midfield.Regarding Lindelof, I think Jose has been clear he needs time to settle and he hinted about him not starting the season as a starter after what happened in the preseason.
Jones and Bailly are our current best pair and Lindelof will work his way up to the starting position when he settles more.Not really an inspiring first 11. Secretly hoping it's 433 instead of 4231 as that often ends up looking more like 6211.Very happy with Mourinho's thinking, especially his immediate willingness to play a midfield 2 against inferior talented opposition.
Looks like a team designed purely to get the best out of Lukaku against the kind of team we dropped silly points at home against.
Would have preferred Martial over Rashford but that's just personal preference.Attacking wise...

Likewise. I believed Mourinho would have 3 differently midfield selections: Herrera-Matic-Pogba in the most difficult games; Matic-Pogba in the intermediate matches and Herrera-Pogba in the easier games.
Fellaini, Pereira and Carrick will be backups to Herrera, Pogba and Matic respectively.

This kind of manager, yeah, I'm pretty sure that's how he thinks.And that's how a manager would think? It's not about getting the 3 points on the board and starting the season well.
Herrera isn't playing. It's Mata.
There must have been a better way to phrase that.
Having attacking players on the field doesn't automatically make it attacking. We had a similar line up in a lot of games last season and it wasn't anything like being attacking.
Let's see how and where players like Rashford,Mata and Miki are playing and with how much attacking intent.
I would have preferred to see 352 with Martial and Lukaku up top and Miki in the midfield 3 with he and Pogba joining the attack you'd be getting 6 attacking players in position where in with the 4231 we'll maybe get 4 or 5 depending on Valencias freedom.I love Slaven, but I want him to lose today.

I know Mourinho's flexible but has he ever played without width? Seems likely he'll be playing the same setup as he did vs. Madrid in the 2nd half - 433 with Mata as the attacking midfielder rather than Fellaini/Pogba.Seems like a pretty fluid line-up, tbh.
