I expect Rashford will be benched simply because he's played two games in a week already and he looked knackered by the end of the Arsenal match. Whether LVG subscribes to the 'the kid's earned his place, let him keep it' or the 'Martial is still a better striker and needs to come back in when fit' camp probably isn't relevant.

Chelsea are getting rather close to us, and tonight we play two strong, aggressive CFs with only Rojo as a 'true' CB in the squad - and he gifted them a pen last match.

    Good times.

I'd keep playing Rashford, with Memphis on the right (instead of Lingard) and Martial on the left. However, I believe that LVG will bench Rashford

Really hoped Smalling would be back. Deeney and Igahlo are tough centre forwards who could rough us up a bit.

Hope we go in to this with some momentum from Sunday. It's these sorts of fixtures which have tripped us up, a la Norwich at home and Sunderland away.

No Smalling - that is bad news. I want to see young and exciting players but I want to win the match.

    De Gea
    Varela--Rojo--Blind--F.Mensah
    Schneiderlin--Herrera
    Lingard--Mata--Memphis
    Martial

subs: Romero, Darmian, Poole, Riley, Weir, Rothwell, Rashford

I think that will be the starting lineup or possibly Darmian at RB.

    I'd like to see

    ------------Rashford
    Memphis-----Mata------Martial
    -------Herrera --- Carrick
    Rojo-----Blind---Smalling----Verala

TFM for Rojo in not fit.

Anyone else not upset with the absence of Rooney?

I couldn't care less if he never came back. I am just enjoying the hunger and enthusiasm of the younger lads too much to even notice his absence.

No Carrick or Smalling or McNair in the squad. Blind and Rojo/Poole/TFM?

I think Rojo and Blind will play CB with Varela RB and Darmian LB. Not sure if he throws in TFM

I guess that's a possibility as well, but I doubt Van Gaal would start Darmian today without putting him on as a sub in a couple of games first, especially when he's just recovered from a dislocated shoulder. It'd be too risky and not entirely justified as we can go with Fosu-Mensah today instead.

Watford haven't been involved in the bottom scrap despite relying on two blokes for goals all season.

    Impressive.

For the first time in the past three to four months, I actually cant wait for this game to start.

I'm actually excited to watch a United game too and that's not happened in a long, long time. Given it's a midweek game I think Rashford will be benched seeing as how he got a knock and hasn't had much time to recover. Think we'll see Martial come in and Rashford replacing him.

I'd be a bit annoyed if Varela gets dropped though. Darmain should be on the bench. Varelas been excellent so far.

Here's what we know, Memphis is certainly not a RM as hes more of wide forward and his greatest attribute is his ability to cut inside and shoot so he's a LW through and through. He's also just played his best to games in that position. Martial has never looked as good in RM because again it takes away his ability to cut inside howeer he has shown that he has brilliant hold up play in the striker position. Surely if we want to fit Martial, Memphis and Rashford into the team, then Rashford has to be tried at RM

    Memphis-----Martial-----Rashford in a fluid front 3.

I don't see any reason why Rashford wouldn't be able to use his explosive pace and dribbling to take on his man and get into the box for goal chances. It just seems criminal to me that Martial (our best player) is the one that should get shunted wide right. Rashford should give it ago first.

Would be pretty silly if LVG benched Rashford, his form is just too good for that to happen.

Front four should be Rashford up top, Martial at left wing, Mata in behind, and Memphis on the right wing.

But knowing LVG, it won't be. He'll unjustifiably start Lingard on the right yet again and also bench Rashford.

Not only is it so fluid, they all have tremendous pace. Just a nightmare for any back four.

Though I agree, I think the best way of fitting all three of them in would be to try Rashford on the right.

I mean however you do it that 3 has some excellent pace that lets be honest we have been crying out for all year. with Mata pulling the strings behind I cant see them not bagging goals.

You say risky yet you want to play a CB who just had 15mins at LB in the first team?

We've won 10/10 home games without Smalling let's not jinx it and keep him on the bench.

I was not aware of this.
Has he even missed 10 games all season?
Are you sure of this stat?

He was on the pitch for nearly 40 minutes. It wouldn't be ideal, but I think he showed more than enough to trust him in this game. It'd also be less risky than starting Darmian today, in my opinion. We should slowly introduce him back into the team unless there's an emergency like the one that forced Van Gaal to start Rojo against Arsenal.

Weird how there's no Januzaj or Pereira. Injured?

They played Monday for the reserves, maybe it's too soon for them? We have a lot of games coming, they will get their chance... hopefully.

It leaves our attacking options thin..., to say the least. I know they need 'match rhythm' but who are we bringing off the bench to change things up?

We'd have only one option, Martial or whomever is benched for him.

So either Martial, our best forward, or Rashford, four goals in the last two games. Either seems like a decent option coming off the bench to me.

    Newcastle 3-1
    Liverpool 3-0
    Palace 1-0

Martial's been used wide a lot of the season already, so it seems a bit of a big ask to put rookie Rashford out of position.
Bring Martial back in by all means, and him and Rashford can interchange

You can't not start a player in such form.
He can rest off at the weekend if needs be.

Damn, no Carrick or Smalling is a blow.

    Gone with:

XI: de Gea; Varela, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo; Sncheiderlin, Herrera; Lingard, Mata, Memphis; Martial
    Subs: Darmian, Poole, Rashford
    Unused: Romero, Riley, Rothwell, Weir

Hope we can get the win, still fancy us to get 2 goals and Watford 0 or 1.
