I've been refreshing like a madman for 2 minutes expecting team news.

8pm kick off i see.... be back in 15 minutes.

United squad: De Gea, Romero, Darmian, Varela, Poole, Blind, Riley, Rojo, Fosu-Mensah, Rothwell, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Mata, Lingard, Memphis, Weir, Rashford, Martial

Where's Januzaj or Pereira now? Are Weir and Poole ahead of them too. Absolute joke.

I can't remember which games, though it has been fleeting when it has happened so he probably won't start with him there tonight.

I don't think two left footers is a big deal myself, but the way van Gaal operates can be strange to say the least. I think the two right footers thing from last year is probably what convinced him to convert Blind into a CB.
Or that fact that Blind is a better CB than the other options and we have better LBs and CMs. It isn't a big deal for van Gaal either as he has done it loads of times. Opposite foot is ideal but he isn't anal about it like portrayed on here. He would never play Darmian at CB over Rojo because he is left footed.

I hope we don't underestimate this lot. They're going to be up for it a lot more than the bottlers on Sunday.

Yeah, I would want to keep Rashford in to be honest and hope he does. However, with the lack of experience at the back (possibly) and Rashford looking knackered after Arsenal, LvG might opt for the slightly more experienced players where possible.

Do you think Darmian would play RCB or LB? Tough call.

I don't like playing people out of position, but I like mucking about with a winning team even less, so probably leave Varela as he is, and move Darmian to left back, or dare I say it to centre back and keep Rojo left back.

It would seem odd starting with Darmian there, and him and Blind isn't a great combo for high balls, but it would mean only 1 change of position in the back 4, whereas Rojo moving would be 2.

I wondered how we'd deal with Arsenal's aerial threat with Merty and Giroud with so little height on Sunday, but they made that a non worry!

They both featured for the U21s just yesterday, and I don't think it's a 'pecking order' thing, Weir and Poole play in CM and defence, both Januzaj and Andreas are seen as attackers.

There have been plenty of times where logic has gone out of the window for reasons like that since he has been here. Remember when he had Rooney playing in midfield to maintain balance, or when he had Phil Jones taking corners?

He could've (and should've) brought in another centre half in the summer but chose to stick with Blind. The fact that he did leads me to believe it was because he's a left footer and he couldn't find a better one to replace him.

Or when he put Blackett in so many key situations last season when there were veterans available at LB/LCB in the 3. I think he has an unhealthy obsession with that.

I think van Gaal sees Smalling and Jones as our best combination but when one isn't fit he's straight back into his right foot/left foot regime.

I dunno how Weir manages to get ahead of Pereira and Januzaj.

    Erm...were short on attackers

    TFM and Rashford starts

I'm pretty sure he didn't use them as a pairing in pre-season when he was starting with the Blind experiment. I think he actually dropped Smalling and only brought him back in once Jones got injured

Your post made me realize that Jones played the equivalent of 7 games.

    nice line up
De Gea; Varela, Blind, Rojo, Fosu-Mensah; Schneiderlin, Herrera; Martial, Mata, Memphis; Rashford.

    VAN GAAL'S STARTING XI
The boss has named his team and Rashford has retained his place up front, even though Martial has returned. Tim Fosu-Mensah also makes his first start and Juan Mata has been named captain in the absence of Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling. Joe Rothwell is on the bench.

Would be devastated if Martial is kn the right.
