Dire half as usual. LVG is beginning to get on my nerves with his insistence on this formation. As well as having a striker in midfield, a midfielder in defence and another midfielder in attack. Genius.

Losing this would be a major disappointment as we've looked pretty good imho. Not exactly terrorising them in front of goal but we're getting there. Southampton is not an easy team to play against.

    I am actually enjoying this.

Mata is great. Play Di Maria deeper. He's shooting too much and not running at them enough

352 reduces the 90 minutes to about 40 because our way of playing it stifles creativity so much...hoping for a better second

We are such a 'safe' team these days. No tempo, mostly backwards and sideways passing, no through balls, no one running with the ball, no one collecting the ball then turning and moving towards goal, no one willing to take a risk or try something, no one risking to gamble.

You'd think we were losing 5-0 and being completely outplayed listening to you guys

Lots of possession but so'ton relatively untroubled as they have come to park the bus.

I still maintain that this 3 at the back nonsense is the root cause of our slack offensive performances. We really need to go back to a 4 man backline so we can work the wings much better and get some crosses in.

A stalemate of shit. I can't see why we need 3 at the back against one forward. The wing backs are struggling to link up with anyone because no one is pulling towards them. No one is really attacking the ball coming into the area either.

Very disappointing after a decent start to the game once Soton stopped pressing as high.

Push Blind further forward, push Rooney further forward and things might open up a bit.

Decent first half so far, need to stop to waste everything in the final third and players like Di Maria and Rooney should do better here and there. Our overall play looks good, game is completely in our hand, sort the shit out in the 2nd half and we will smash them.

We controlled the game well, Southampton weren't too dangerous.

But christ, so uninspiring and wasteful in the final 3rd.

Poor half, none of our players seem keen on committing themselves to the attack, especially our attackers. I've also seen our players pulling out of 50/50 challenges, which is annoying to see.

I can't see the tone changing in the second half unless we get someone like Herrera on who will offer us a bit more variety and movement.

No penetration. We have the players on the pitch, the formation is holding them back. Move Di Maria deeper, Rooney further forward and blind into midfield.

Di Maria has been very poor and with the options we have on the bench I would like to see Herrera and Fellaini given a shot.

We simply aren't creating enough, Southampton are well organised but we can't keep using that as an excuse for what appears to be an issue on our side.

Di Maria has been very poor. How about putting our best striker up front and moving one of our most creative midfielders into midfield?
It seems like the obvious move, doesn't it? Right now, there is little to differentiate between Di Maria and Nani on one of his off-days.

That half was a lot of perspiration and not enough inspiration. Our final ball is letting us down up front. We should switch Di Maria and Rooney to their most comfortable positions. We're struggling to create chances even with the talent at our disposal.

Great play, poor finall ball, but Southamton are a good team so it's to be expected, RVP should have buried that chance

Mata's been fantastic. Smalling, Carrick, Valencia and Van Persie impressive.

Di Maria a little short of fitness and Blind struggling for pace. Need a few games.

I feel sorry for Shaw. Asking him to be like Evra is harsh when you consider Evra always had a winger to either over or under-lap, or at least use as a decoy. Shaw and Valencia are just isolated, there's no need for 3 at the back plus Carrick in midfield as Southampton are showing no ambition at all.

Didn't Ancelotti recently say Di Maria lacked discipline and that was one of the reasons they let him go?

Seriously, what's the difference between the shit we've been serving out this season and the shite we saw last season?

I'm finding us to be a very boring team to watch at the moment, I can't remember one thing that got me off my seat in that half.

Let's see what the "philosophy" brings in the 2nd half. Mata has been our best player, take Rooney off as his been awful and bring Herrera on!

Swap Di Maria and Rooney round so there actually in their best positions. Take Blind off for Herrera and switch to 4 at the back. Wishful thinking though as won't happen.

Hmmm - I haven't found it boring. Cagey and close which was to be expected given our relative positions and their defensive record. It's always a worry when you dominate possession but don't score. A bit of swapping at half time should, hopefully, solve that.

And, as ever, I hate Tyler.

Van Gaal is pissing me off playing this formation. No wonder we have had so many draws with this non-penetrative absolute dogshit formation.

Rooney has been abysmal, Mata and Carrick look 50/50 whether they will actually pass it to another red shirt or not. Di Maria has been horrible.

On the plus side we have pressed them well and defended well, with Blind reading them really well. Southampton have had no time to do anything.

Second half we need to go to a flat back 4 and start looking to hurt them. That was shit, as every game with this formation is.

    Valencias been pretty great.
Not sure i love the 3-5-2 but it makes good use of him.

Blind and Di Maria look miles off the pace, which is hardly surprising. Blind actually looks even slower then usual, which is quite an achievement.

Strange decision to start them both.

When are some of you gonna get that this is how we're gonna be playing from now on?!? I don't like it either, but LVG's style differs from Sir Alex's, as he wants more safety and less risks. This was not a bad first half, it just comes with playing safer that we create less chances. Southampton, a quality side, has also only had one chance. If our final ball was better, we'd have a goal by now, but everything up until then was fine.

Fairly happy so far. We are controlling the game and stopping them creating to many chances. While going forward you can see the parts are there. We actually have movement and pressing right now, it is just that final ball that is letting us down right now. With the players we have out there, I just feel it is a matter of time before one of them get it right and we create a real chance. It will just be a matter of taking it, because Southampton are playing very well defensively .

our games are getting boring and boring.

    No real chances created again.

This is even more boring than last 2 seasons many moaned about.

Mata good, Di Maria poor. Was always going to be tight and tactical as Southampton are a good, well organised side. We've looked solid defensively as well. Hopefully game will open up 2nd half.
