Fred and Pereira are both weird players. Both have a lot of ability but keep losing the ball. Seen this in a few games now. I think they are the wrong way round too, would have Pereira at the front of the three.

In a bigger game would take Fred off but he clearly needs match time. Hope to see Garner for McTominay (who should go out on loan, probably to the Championship).

My point is he needs to press for the ball if he wants to play in the regular first team. Everyone is working hard for the ball but not him (in the first half). I do not doubt about his skill, but this is a team game. I have always rooted for Sanchez but he needs to work harder than this.

Fred passes better and quicker when it's a counter attacking situation with players running ahead of him. But then, under other circumstances, just dwells on the ball when several players present the opportunity to pass to feet. It feels like he is an attacking player who is being asked to play a role he isn't really going to excel at anytime soon. Could do well with playing higher up the pitch and in and around that penalty area, maybe.

It is an ordinary line up because Ole is giving players who have not started regularly during the recent frantic festive period a chance. It could be argued it is too much.. but we are two up. And maybe in the second half the understanding between the players will get better.
What this does show is how we lack strength in depth particularly in midfield. Likes of Liverpool would have a Keita or a Fabinho to bring in.. we have McTominay and Perreira.
What we would give for a Phil Foden. He can't get a City game but would walk into this team.

Midfield has been pretty shit, but I'd like to give Fred a little bit more credit than the other two. Tried too much and needs to knock it off but had 2-3 really good incisive forward passes that setup interesting attacking situations. Needs to learn to do the simple thing most of the time.

We should maybe try to use Fred in the Pogba role (inside right instead of inside left) but McTom and Pereira don't provide enough defensive cover to do that. Still, it's Reading, we're winning and I'm sure we'll get another goal or two in the next half anyway, so it's maybe more important to give everyone playing time.

The midfield is not working. Fred is too high, and McTominay is hiding, instead of giving option to Periera, who is getting caught on the ball because of it. Bring Fellaini on for McTominay, or if not him then Garner. Get that control in midfield first.

Mctominay - Fred - Pereira have all been awful to be honest. No creation, misplaced passes, poorly timed challenges and defensively they haven't got a clue. Reading just waltz right past them every time they attack.

Sanchez has been lively without creating much, he's linked up well with Lukaku a few times. Lovely pass for the assist.

Third round at home vs Sheffield United in 2016 is the classic example. Struggled for the whole game and only won it with a stoppage time Rooney penalty. We did go on to win the cup, though...

Pereira and Fred are both brazillian and flashy but They can't control the midfield to save their lives, it's like having two AMFs that somehow always lose their footings whenever They're in their own half.

I reckon We'll have a better control if We replace one of them with Fellaini and that's not even an exaggeration based on what happened in the first half. Please gods of football, let Ander and Pogba be injury free for the rest of the season.

A Lukaku at Everton or West Brom was a different animal. Last season José had him playing like how he wants center forwards to play which was with their back to goal and dropping deep to hold the ball up. That’s not his game. With a manager who plays the ball forward and get good service to him he would outscore anyone in this team.

Rashford is arguably better atm but Lukaku isn’t just a squad player

If you watch tape on him, he is all about the through ball, he played his whole life and probably thought not to pass to static players, the fact that he can't speak English is also hindering him in communicating fully with his teammates.

My stupid Sky box prevented me watching about a 15 minute chunk of the first half but the reactions to the performance in here seem way OTT, even by usual caf standards.

I'm always reluctant to draw to many conclusions about players when they're put into makeshift sides like this. There's too much change to expect it to be seamless and have everyone click.

It's obviously not been great, but people on here would be giving away Sanchez, Fred and Mata for free going from comments on here.
