I think his price tag/wages/reputation are too much for someone who would be third choice if everyone is fit (and if he is ahead of Ronaldo the drama of him being 3rd choice would be a disaster). It’s why arnautovic always made sense from a footballing perspective once we knew Ronaldo unlikely to leave - far lower price tag happy to be on bench who also offered a different profile.

That still involves offloading Ronaldo this summer just gone, and then "binning off" Martial in a couple seasons, both of which are easier said than done. This sort of approach is fine every now and then as part of a broader strategy, but sometimes you have to be patient and pragmatic and wait a season. Nobody will be complaining if next summer we bring in a striker better than Scamacca and it doesn't cost us an arm and a leg in paying a former players salary on behalf of their new club, or having a player on £200k a week refusing to move.
