To be fair, we started the season with 2 genuine first-team centre-backs (Phil Jones does not count as a viable option) so if anything, I'm surprised it's taken this long for us to have to use both Carrick and Blind back there.

It's a miracle Mike Smalling has played as many minutes as he has done so far. Think it's finally caught up with him though because his form's been mixed since the start of the year.

Interesting ties against interesting teams with the added spice of our former players returning? Always nice to welcome back former players to OT.
Aah, gotcha. But if those ties end badly, you know exactly how the media and the caf will react. For the sake of my own sanity, I wouldn't want that. Give me a straightforward fixture anyday.

But I do like the prospect of playing Valencia especially, if it happens.

Does van Gaal not rate TFM at all ? Why is he not even getting a shout ? Atleast Tuanzebe got on the subs once.

Look at that bench, I know we have injuries but that's just bullshit.

You do realise we have 14 or 15 players unavailable? There's probably not a team in the world that wouldn't be delving deep into their reserves with that level of absence.

You'll be hard pushed to find a CB partnership with more expansive passing though.

We're at home, we'll probably have about 70% possession and I think having those two passing from the back with Schneiderlin doing a mop up job and Mata and Herrera working around the opposition's box is good reason to be positive. We've got reasonable pace out wide and Martial playing through the middle.

I'm actually quite looking forward to this, I love it when we have so many hungry young players on the field. Varela and Lingard down one side, Riley and Memphis down the other with Martial taking centre stage.

    Let's try to enjoy it.

I just think we are taking a risk against their pacey counter that gave us problems in the first leg. It certainly should be fun to see the young attacking players on a European night at Old Trafford, even in the Europa League.

Thing is, i'd say they only need 30% of the ball to cause us enough problems.

Still think we'll win though, going for 3-2 ... :nervous:

Yep. But still think we will win. I'm just worried on what they could do to us on the counter. Inexperience on the flanks and two slow moving centre backs who usually are not tight enough to the players. This will be an entertaining match, that's for sure.

    and fyi, I wasn't moaning :p

Just keep that 8-2 in mind....

That team is absolutely farcical. Seriously, that's the sort of team we used to put out in the league cup against some crowd of shitbags. Injuries or not, that is ridiculous

Even taking injuries into account, you still consider it ridiculous?
    Rightback:

    Darmian
    Valencia
    Young

    Varela ✓

    Centreback:
    Smalling
    Jones
    Rojo

    Blind ✓
    McNair (Dropped to bench)

    Leftback:
    Shaw
    Rojo
    Darmian
    Young
    Borthwick Jackson
    Blind
    (At CB)
    Riley

4 positions, 12 players, 9 of which are injured....

I'd like to think otherwise but unfortunately I can't see us getting through with all the injuries we have.

positive - Rojo back in the fold.
negative - that bench, the fullbacks, Carrick at centre back, Memphis starting through no act of his own!

Penny for McNair's thoughts! We won't even start you son when we have Valencia, Shaw, Young, Smalling, Jones, Rojo, BJ, and Darmian not starting!

If we can sneak through tonight, please let at least De Gea and Smalling be back for Sunday, as a minimum.

    Is anyone else remotely close?

This is the 2nd season in a row where we've had a serious injury situation. More to the point, you can exclude Rojo and Jones from that list. I'm waiting to see when their next injury is such is their situations.

Plus, Blind is not a centre back and the likes of McNair is not good enough. Jury is also still out on Darmian

Yeah you have to laugh with what we're capable of putting out for a crucial European home tie, and it is ridiculous, regardless of injuries.

4 positions, 12 players, 9 of which are injured....

Ah, but 4 of those 12 are youngsters, 3 of which were nowhere near the First XI when the season started. so that's 9 players (including McNair, who really, isn't good enough to be an option for us, so 8). One of those 8 is Ashley Young, who's makeshift at best... so that's 7 players for 4 positions. Of those 7 players, one of them is Phil Jones, who I think we all could have predicted would spend this season injured, so that's 6 players. Of those 6 players, one of them is Dailey Blind... who's a midfielder who's meant to cover FB but has been turned into a CB to mixed results...

So that's 6/7 players (minus a Blind or a McNair) for 4 positions.

When was the last time we had a team / subs as bad as this (apart from when we've deliberately played a weakened team)?

    1980's sometime?

Quite ridiculous that a club of our size is fielding that side, absolute madness.

How could he ever think it was a good idea to trim the squad to this extent?

I personally think the back five is very good in that side...

It's easily the best part, though you would have question marks over the right back... and whether one of the centre backs could get through the game without a) injuring himself b) injuring a teammate c) exploding.

That defense is poor. Of course not much we can do in the circumstances, but still... Wow...
