I see a boring ass draw with Guardiola seeing it as a decent enough result and they’ll beat us in the return leg.

One thing Pep 100% doesn't need is an extra game against game raising cnuts like us.
He'll finish the business from the first leg.

Gomes didn't play for the under 23s, hopefully we will see him on the bench at least. Garner played so he will not be included.

    My team would be:
    Romero
    Awb Lindelof Jones Williams
    Matic
    Fred gomes
    Greenwood martial rashford

Jones because Maguire needs a rest and we have noone else.

    Ole will go with:

    De gea
    Awb Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    Matic Fred
    Lingard
    James Martial Rashford

I do not get why he persists with two holding and the obsession with Lingard and James. Greenwood is ready and Gomes needs a run. Give the lad a run of 5 or 6 games, he signs a new deal.

We are so depleted in midfield its not funny. The more concerning thing is that we only have two players out injured.

If Fred gets injured we might as well pack it in and called it a season.

Norwich game far more important.. but this being the semis and City would mean we cant take it easy.

Same for City.. the league is gone. They'll go all out for the cups.

I cant pretend to care about the league cup..

No injuries and I'd be more than happy..
A doubleheader against City and your not bothered !!
This is a pride thing, its a massive couple of games.
If you can get excited for a Manchester Derby, I am shocked !

I don't get why Garner is playing for the u23s when he is surely next in line if we get another knock in midfield? Now it seems Chong and Gomes will be the ones that feature. Doesn't make much sense when Garner has been the one making the bench recently given that we actually need him now.

Ole said that he and Levitt needed game time as they’d been out with niggles etc

Got a bad feeling about tonight. For whatever reason I feel a lot more confident going to the Emptyhad than I do when they come to us.

Feel like we could be on the end of an absolute lesson from Pep tonight. :(

If we open up the game for them then it might get ugly. Don't think we can do anything other than sit back deep and look to counter.

From what I can gather, the following players are 100% out: McTominay, Pogba, Tuanzebe, Rojo, Bailly, Fosu-Mensah

    Doubts: Martial, Lingard, Shaw, Maguire

I would assume one or two of the doubts make it in, but I'd be slightly surprised if any of them started. I can't really see the point in taking any risks as in all honesty, I expect City to score two or three times and doubt we'd manage to overturn that in the second leg anyway. As it stands, I would be 'throwing' this game to a degree, along with the Wolves game and return leg at City. Not that I want us to miss out on realistic silverware, but I think we have a good enough chance at top four in the Premier League and the Europa League to justify it - especially with the current amount of injuries. I'd hate it if we risked Maguire tonight and he's out for a month, for example, when I think the risk/reward is absolutely not worth it.

    de Gea
    Wan-Bissaka Lindelof Jones Young
    Fred Matic
    James Andreas Rashford
    Greenwood
    ---
Romero; Dalot, Williams; Garner, Mata; Chong, Martial

I'm thinking Ole might try to use more experience and play Young instead of Williams from the start. I'm sure at least one of Martial/Shaw/Lingard will make it, Martial is the most important to have available as we have four fullbacks and a couple of no.10s fit anyway, so Shaw and Lingard won't be missed. I'm just not optimistic at all. We rarely get battered even if we're terrible. City can do it to anyone, but I'm gonna say they'll win 1-3 and at that point it's over. I don't think we'll win at the Eithad anyway, maybe scrape a draw to save grace in the away leg.

I know we'll take this seriously and be up for it because it's a derby, but I just think it's a bit silly to put all our eggs in this basket so to speak. If we take further injuries by risking players, it fecks up more than just one game. We could be out of nearly everything by the start of February and have to go all-in on the Europa League anyway.

The 7th is our better chance of a result of course. Unless you think we're going to produce the magic of the last away game v them! Nothing suggests we will.
Man Utd are certainly better at home than away - 13 games unbeaten at home in all competitions. And yet, the last two occasions in which United beat City were at the Ethiad.

My comment was me arguing semantics really. More a way of both agreeing and disagreeing with both sides. Side A - Resigned to losing, pointless game. Side B - A must win. Then my comment - Yes, it isn't necessary to win this game on the 7th per se. It is necessary to win the tie overall, however.

Injuries make City the favourites, yet United have both lost as underdogs in recent years, as well as being victorious.

If Bravo starts, I expect United to have several shots on target, as he's prone to lapses in concentration.

James should be relishing the opportunity to face Mendy.

It remains to be seen if Otamendi will return, or if Garcia will accompany Fernandinho. Win or lose, I hope United don't pull out the red carpet.

Two legs in this competition is OTT

I'm struggling to get hyped for this game, purely due to the amount of key players missing.

The counter is our only weapon. Most teams have figured out that we can't break down a resolute defence. Pep will still play on the offence but will try to negate our counter. This will give us more possession than we normally have in these games. With Bravo in goal it's imperative the players keep shots on target as he will drop a clanger if tested enough. We also need to be shooting from long range as we may struggle to get in behind them.

I really dont get the, I am not bothered posts, how can you not be fired up for a Manchester Derby !

Probably because we’re so painfully shite. We’ll probably raise our game though, because that’s what we are now and it’s so sad.

I want this trophy. We better fecking win.

A large part of us being solid and aggressive was down to Scott McTominay. You won’t have to worry about that with Matic in midfield Pep.
Also a lot of the counters go from CB via McT to the forwards. He is good a showing up in the right place behind the pressing opponent players and quickly hit a ball forward.

I get that some of our games are shit, but its a Derby whats not to get excited for.
Me personally, if I could not get excited for a Derby, I would just give up on football.

I honestly don't believe Ole was responsible for that. I believe Woodward or the other guy who is responsible for contracts just do anything to keep an 'asset' on the books.

Didn't Woodward already explain this in the United We Stand interview?

He said something like a player might not have a future at the club but they need to keep the squad at a certain level numbers-wise and in order to retain their sell-on value they recontract.

This approach apparently doesn't take into account the fact that no one is interested in buying these players at the prices Woodie thinks they're worth and their wages are higher than they'd get anywhere else, so they stay on the books for years.

Jeeezz... been thinking we were playing this game away, so losing, notably with Matic in midfield didn't bother me... but now I realise this is at home, so I'm just simply annoyed...

I believe our wage structure may be the biggest thing holding this club back.

We seem to give players bumper contracts when their best years are over/coming to an end. Then we can't get rid of them. We should be letting players go earlier and reinvesting every year.

Had to sell my ticket for tonight as I'm ill, which is a bit shit.

Based on that, I bet we win 3-0.

If Maguire, Lingard (not that I’m bothered) & Martial are out then I think Ole is going to go with the following:

    Starting XI

    De Gea

    Wan-Bissaka
    Lindelof
    Jones
    Shaw

    Fred
    Matic

    James
    Pereira
    Rashford

    Greenwood

    subs:
    Romero
    Young
    Wiliams
    Dalot
    Mata
    Gomes
    Chong

    Score Prediction:
    Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City

    DDG
    AWB - Lindelof - Jones
    Young - Pereira - Fred - Williams
    James - Greenwood - Rashford

Subs: Matic (Pereira) - Martial (Greenwood) - Chong (Rashford)
Go for goals in the first 30 minutes, then sit back and hang on...

    United 3 -1 City

    Extended squad according to MEN:
