    Football is so amazing sometimes.

Very very few of us predicted such an approach; including Guardiola I suspect, hence probably why Mourinho has done so.

City dressing room will be in deep discussion right now!!

Could also be because this game is all or nothing for us in terms of title race. Few points dropped will still keep us second with Chelsea losing but a win would put us back in it.

So Jose is basically playing with house money.

Matic and Herrera in midfield is scary... for us. They haven´t done well together in any game, so i don´t expect them to do well against the best team in the league. I´d be happy with a draw, but expect City to get a comfortable win with tons of possession, and us failing to get the ball out of our own half apart from aimlessly hoofing the ball forward.

The two are made for these kind of games, in my opinion. Games where you just want them to sit and allow the front four to counter.

Against teams we dominate, where we need creativity and attacking impetus, then these two are not required.

    That's the spirit, stay positive!

Anyhow, I expect Guardiola to be more than ready to deal with our early pressure and soon they'll be controlling possession and the game, with Matić and Herrera seeing them pass through.

We absolutely have to win this. The fact Liverpool are now three points behind us goes to show how far away we are from challenging City unless we make this a 6-pointer.

Good positive lineup from Mourinho. Did not espect that. I have some concern about our defense though. Rojo and Smalling have not played much games together and two former wingers as fullback.

Considering the lineup this will be either spectacular or disastrous.

We are home folks. Any case, upto Herrera and Matic to hold fort in center and for Martial, Lingard, Rashford and Lukaku to wreck havoc. That's the hope.
Was only not sure who would be defensive pairing. Tough job whoever is out there. Rojo better keep his tackles in check.

Man City's backfour is really good. I remember seeing Napoli trying the high press against them and the backline showed incredible composure, short passing past the press. Having a goalkeeper like Ederson as support of course helps a lot. With this in mind it will be interesting to see if Man Utd will press the backline like against Arsenal or sit back and cover space.

Mourinho probably sh**tting his pants after putting this line-up out. The game will be won and lost in our box I feel. :p

    Can't wait!

Yes. It’s a must win for us and very glad Mourinho has the balls to go for it

    Great counter-attacking line-up. Bravo Jose.

Jesus is there to press our CBs and Matic in order to disrupt our build up play. They should be careful.

The lineup is good, missing pogba is obviously a huge loss. I just hope it’s not an attacking lineup with sit deep and try to contain instructions.

Good news. Point stands though. We are closer to a Top 4 contest than a title contest. We HAVE to win.

I want us to win but its not all over from a draw. There are still many big games for both sides to play yet.

If I recall it well, we didn't start the Newcastle game very well with that lineup, even suffered an early goal, didn't we?

Going for bust it looks like! As many people have said before, Mourinho knows how to win games in isolation. This isn’t a change for the sake of a change, he has a plan.

 Love it when people complain he didn't 'go for it' in other games and then when he does he's mental. Yes it's City but he's not a complete idiot, he is very methodical - sometimes things don't work but most do. It's a risky line up but I guarantee that if he went more defensive and we lose then people would be bouncing up and down screaming why he didn't 'go for it at home in a must win'

Reckon Lingard will effectively be playing as the third midfielder.

If Fellaini was fit it probably would have been a straight up three man midfield, but as he didn't even make the bench he obviously wasn't an option.

Mourinho unhinged. He's lost big games with some embarrassing scorelines over the years due to an unbalanced setup. Chelsea 0-4 and Barcelona 0-5 spring to mind. And City have one of the best teams in Europe at the moment.

Obviosuly different circumstances, but in our pre season game against City, Jose went with:

    De Gea
    Valencia Lindelof Smalling Blind
    Herrera Pogba
    Lingard Mkhitaryan Rashford
    Lukaku

This forum should be renamed MoanCafe ....

If he plays it tight, and tries to sit deep and counter attack, boooring.
If he plays it expensive, with four attackers and go for it, he's crazyyy we're gonna get destroyed.

I'm out of the match thread untill the game finishes (and if we win :P).

Can't play a 2 man mid against a Guardiola team, we've been here before in SAF's days.

Really, really hope I'm wrong, but I think it's the wrong set-up.
It's a go for bust, if we're losing let us lose attacking, set-up.

We just need to start well because this team has the ability to get in behind defences. I think we'll draw 1-1 but I just hope we score first, are solid and then take our chances on the break.

Actually, compare to other managers, I think he has very few results like that. And those were games like today's, where the fans were forcing his hand to play attacking, specially the Barcelona one.

I’m so fecking nervous. First time since the Fergie era that I’ve been properly nervous before a game

Players will be up for this . We will want to show that we are still in the hunt for the title.
