They have been shite for 4 games (and werent great today) but we wasted half the game hoofing it at a Sunday league level.

If we tryed to play for 90 minutes (and kept Lukaku out of our box) we' have won that.

The better team won, we didn't really turn up and their second goal just killed us. Lukaku really should be scoring those chances, he hit it straight at Ederson

I'm not saying it was a great shot but I don't think it was awful. He just happened to hit it straight at Ederson's throat. I think if it was De Gea saving that, we'd be lauding the goalkeeping, not bemoaning the striker's shot.

That said, you're right because he has been pretty ineffective lately, especially today. I don't think we're getting the best out of him and I think we should address it because it's becoming an issue. We've been asking him to do some defensive work and even playing him on the wing at points. Somebody said it in a recent match but you can't expect a player of his height, weight and build to chase the ball for 90 minutes and still score goals. He's not that type of player.

Yes his clearance for Otamendi's goal was iffy but I also think City have been very good at doubling up against our defenders. Our wing play hasn't been very creative and we've struggled to get balls into the box in general. We basically scored from a stupid mistake on their part.

And, not that it's really important, but Zlatan wasn't effective either. Our attack all-round was crap.

Indeed. Not saying he should be benched for Zlatan. We are dire unless the oppo make it easy for us.

Martial is a fairweather player, you can hardly tell he is even there.

If we didn't start Lukaku in this game, story would be different, we might win a game but Lukaku cost us with goals

The most frustrating thing about Lukaku is that when he gets the balls played to him that he thrived on at Everton, where he uses his pace and power to bully defenders, he does feck all with here.

Stick Zlatan up there for a bit with Martial and Rashford doing his running.

City looked like they could have gone up a gear and that's the most depressing thing.

We don't have enough quality. This match showed as much. I'm not saying the race is over but just now I can't see how City is gonna throw this lead away.

I agree, it's an unpopular opinion because Martial has a lot of ability and occasionally does fantastic things but for me we're still struggling to figure out what he's best at. I think we should consider pushing him more central rather than relying on him as an out-and-out winger because I just don't think he is (not saying he should be our main striker).

the signs are there, city is slowly losing form, come summer and second half they could well start to bottle it, their discipline is not Barca / Bayern level.

lukaku was very poor but lots of others were bloody anonymous. wasn't even sure martial was playing for large parts of the game. very few pluses but I said lindelof was going to be good and can't wait to see him and bailly together. what i want o know from sky is which famous united fan they are going to have in the studio for our next game. seriously, gary the nev is right, we were not good enough, we are not comfortable enough on the ball. need to search the world for truly world-class midfielders not just OK/goodish

    Thanks for the reminder.

It's not like the commentators, pundits at the various media outlets don't ram this point down our throats at practically every opportunity.

That’s why I said ‘bottom line’. The commentators and pundits, as you say, are right. Yes I’m stating the obvious but I’d say 85% of everything posted on a forum is very obvious.

Meh, people will moan about the game and everything about it, but if Lukaku hadn't gifted them two goals we would've been fine. City didn't really create anything.

I echo this sentiment. An unpopular opinion but City just had more luck than us, they scored two jammy goals and I felt Silva should have been sent off for his foul on Herrera. Seems that luck is on their side this season (think Bournemouth away, Huddersfield away and Southampton at the Etihad) and this is why they're gonna win it come May.

Most disheartening, if anything, was that we gave them too much respect.

Fans and pundits expected that City will concede goals from set pieces. And they scored 2 after set pieces. Football is like that.

Not sure what all the outrage is about.

Whatever petty criticisms you may have towards City, they play consistently good football, and have just been better than us since the beginning of the season. I mean look at the table.

Well we now have to concentrate on getting into the CL places and build our team further for the coming season - simple as that.

If we tryed to play for 90 minutes (and kept Lukaku out of our box) we' have won that.

Oh come off it, they were a different class and absolutely dominated us. Anything other than a win for city would have been an injustice.

We got bullied all over the pitch, Rom was terrible but not one other player in a red shirt can say they are pleased with their performance.

We're actually quite good. We just happen to be going up against someone better.

Felt we were a bit scared of them, especially in the first half, but when a team's won 14 on the bounce there's always going to be a bit of intimidation there.

But the fact is, yes at the minute they are better than us by a considerable margin. Things can change in football very quickly though, and as we know ourselves, having a 10-11 point gap at this stage isn't as huge as the media would have you believe.

But....it's still progress. The fact we're even talking about the title race this year compared to last year shows that. It's important not to whine about the team too much when compared to the last 5 years, we're arguably the closest we've ever been.

Just driven from crewe to altrincham and onto the metro. All lookd pretty perfect conditions on this bit.
Seems south and midlands are the real bad conditions.

Due to arrive 4.5hours before the game..earliest ever!
Have you made it back home?

Most of out attackers waste way too much energy constantly tracking back to defend. They get tired and screw up important attacks. Jose was yelling at Lukaku to track back and get the ball. Was it helpfull? Lukaku couldnt win a single air ball. I dont think we should blame Lukaku for that. The coach has to know how to bring most of our players.
Say we sell players and bring more. We have already spent a ton of money. Will bringing more player solve the problems? Im not convinved.
Look at Sane and De Bruine. Were they good before? They were flying today. Its all about confidence, tactics and a good game plan. Sane surprised me. He was holding on the ball so well. De bruine is poor class. I didnt think the guy is so good. I used to watch him before. He was never this good. Its the way you make them play. Pep knows how to do that. All Jose does is blame this and that guy publicly. Does that increase the players morale?

I aggree. Say City lose De Bruine for a month. They will be screwed. There are a lot of important games ahead. I hope we keep winning. They will slip at some point.

Have you made it back home?

Yes mate, left Altrincham at 7pm, back by 10.20. Exceptionally good drive in the dark and those conditions! Very rarely faster in good day time weather! Massive lower volume of cars about helped!

Overall thoughts on the game, we were completely bossed, but without ever looking too exposed chance wise.
Their two goals were a bit spawny, set piece second balls. The second one was just sh!T. I'd have to see it again, but I think Lindelof was a bit slow at the start, Herrera stupid to niggle a free kick away, and Lukaku a lazy stupid clearance when that just needed to be booted away!
Again, i'd have to see it again, but I suspect his chance was pretty good to make it 2-2!

But all in all, we know where we are, much improved, but lacking that one real top class attacker to make a difference. With Pogba back we'll obviously be a much better team too.

Disappointing today, but we know where are currently. With Pogba back we're a totally different team.

6th last year, so competing for 2nd is massive progress, and we won't play City level teams very often!
