Mourinho will be happy with the draw I reckon, and we may see the first changes to the team for this one.

A win would be fantastic though, a real confidence boost. Hope we have a go.

Big problem if Fellaini is injured till the City game. Who would've thought? Carrick's passing ability might come handy against City, but not very likely to feature alone with Pogba in a midfield two, is it?

Thing is Mourinho always plays for 3 points at home and 1 point away against the top 4 so I'd expect us to try and win.

Is there a chance for Rashford to start against City? I don't think, really… Unless Martial's injured. I know Martial is also a forward, although not a proper striker. But the defensive balance of the team might get shattered. Martial seems to know very well the defensive drill by now. Rashford still needs ‘a bit of work’ to play from the wing, according to the manager. If Mourinho felt that the tactic against Guardiola's City, with their two midfield fullbacks would be to feature two extreme forwards to make runs from the wings, then yes. Although even then Lingard might be his conservative first option.

In other games, in which United are ‘very dominant’ (Europa and League Cup?, but I hope Ibrahimović's not wasted in those games), yes, Rashford can play along and, specially, in front of Ibrahimović.

Hope we will get to see this:
Herrera in place of Fellaini due to the injurry
    Mkhitaryan in place of Mata
    Rashford in place of Rooney

    ---------------------DDG------------------------
    Valencia------Bailly----Blind-----------Shaw
    -------------Herrera----Pogba---------------
    Mkhitaryan-------Ibrahimovic---------Martial
    --------------------Rashford---------------------

I don't think he should replace Martial

Either he needs to play on the RW instead of Mata or Rooney needs to be dropped

Looks like Fellaini's injured :( Hopefully Schneiderlin gets a chance and makes an impact.

    De Gea
    Valencia - Bailly - Blind - Shaw
    Schneiderlin - Pogba
    Mata - Rooney - Mkhitaryan
    Ibrahimovic

Martial and Rashford on the bench.

    I would be surprised if it wasn't a 4-3-3.

    mmmh a proper 5-3-2

    Wall up Jose style

I think Herrera is next in the pecking order, Carrick also makes a good chance

Mkhitaryan must start as urgently or more than Rashford, in my opinion. Not seeing Mourinho playing two extreme forwards at the same time, like Martial and Rashford would be, unless against lower opposition, not surely City or Premier League away games for now.

Rooney's not going to be dropped, not if he keeps pulling this kind of tricks. :nono: But he might be ‘rested’ in some games, to allow for the Ibrahimović/Rashford combine, with the Englishman as the target man.

I think we need to play Mkhitaryan or Rashford through the center this time. Their defence can be got at and Rooney will most likely feck up any counter we have.

Carrick should play this game. Guardiola will overpack the centre as always, so we need his long balls through the midfield or to the wings to bypass them. Run at their fullbacks and whipping crosses in for Zlatan to bully their CBs.

Will be a hard game with a tight scoreline. I'd be tempted to start Smalling instead of Blind as well, not sure the latter is well equipped to handle Aguero's guile and pace.

    De Gea

Not a chance. No way Jose's gonna start Schneiders against City when he ain't even given him minutes so far. I'd eat my hat! Hopefully Lingard's ready and Rashford has to start. Even Jose said that Rash and Ibra could play together. We'll need pace against City. Rash, Lingard and Mkhi has to start.

Martial also deserves to play he is equally a big exciting talent, just a few steps further already than Rashford. We should try to build our team to accomdate both of them that means they should not grow into the same position.

Either you see him as equivalent to Martial and he needs to start getting minutes on the wing in which case it should be the right wing or you se him as a striker in which case he needs to partnered to either Ibra or Rooney and the way Ibra has been playing he too important to drop which just isn't the case with Rooney.

So for me either Rashford doesn't play or he plays on the RW instead of Mkhi or he plays upfront instead of Rooney.

In the long term solution to our formation with this current crop of players is that Rooney goes out of the team and Rashford gets more playing time upfront. In rotation with Zlatan obviously getting rested on occassions aswell. Should be either Rooney+Ibra, Ibra+Rashford or Rooney+Rashford. We are now seeing the Rooney+Ibra combo but in time we should evolve to either one of the combo's with Rashford and for now Ibra+Rashford seems to be the better one.

    Zlatan

    Rasford - Rooney - Mkhitaryan

    Pogba - Fellaini

    Shaw - Blind - Bailly - Valencia

    De Gea
I want this line-up too. Mkhi and Rashford's performance against Hull needs to be rewarded with a start. Rooney will hold on to his place because he won us the three points at the end. I'm still afraid Rooney's habit of constantly losing the ball will hurt us in the long run especially against teams like City and Liverpool who press a lot.

One of our best squad in years and some already surrendered meekly to "almighty city" wow.

This game is where we can expect Mourinho to bring in a few changes to the line-up. He always sets up differently when playing against the bigger teams. City play with a high line so we need to attack the space behind. We also need more bodies in midfield otherwise we'll get overrun by them. So, I would setup the team in a 433 formation this way-

    ---------------------DDG----------------
    Valencia----Bailly-------Blind-----Shaw
    ------------------Carrick----------------
    --------Herrera---------Pogba---------
    Mkhi------------Zlatan---------Rashford

I think we'll lose tbh, Im still not that impressed with our play so far and this is our first test. Against Guardiola teams, we just wont see a lot of the ball and it's yet to be seen how clinical and decisive we can be when we do have it. Sterling, Nolito, Aguero, de Bruyne, Silva are all in great form and are going to cause havoc, it sure is going to be interesting.

Don't think it would be an open end to end game. First derby for both managers, wouldn't want to be on the end of a thrashing. We're the home side, I expect Jose to play an organised pressing game to their possession based game.

Want a midfield 3 for this one , Carrick or Schneiderlin to sit at the base allowing Pogba and Fellaini to break up and bomb forward.Hope Jose add more pace to the front 3. Ibra and Rooney together would be too static.
Knowing Rooney will start again, I just cant be arsed with formations.

September 10th? Football has barely started and there is an International break already...WTF!

This game for me will confirm whether we'll challenge for the title or merely fight for a top 4 spot this season. Our first real test. Jose will park the bus here and the pressure will be on our midfield and defense.

Test for Valencia at RB against Nolito's pace and trickery.
Test for the Bailly-Blind partnership against Aguero and other pacey City attackers.
Big test of Fellaini & Pogba's midfield credentials against a midfield that will relentlessly press them.

My choice would be a 3 man midfield with Carrick, Schneiderlin and Pogba.

    De Gea
    Valencia Bailly Blind Shaw
    Carrick
    Schneiderlin Pogba
    Mkhitaryan Zlatan Rashford

I agree with the above sentiments that a 3-man midfield would be preferred by Jose, but I can't see him dropping Rooney for the derby. So unless he goes back on his word about playing him in midfield then I can't see the line up changing, aside from Mata being dropped for Rashford or Mhki. I think Martial will at least start.

If City look to dominate possession then I'm going to look forward to seeing Pogba's ability to carry the ball forward in the counter too.

Going to be interesting this game. Pep has played a Fernandinho-Silva-De Bruyne midfield in the first games this season, if we use a power midfield we should be able to outpower them: play Carrick and Schneiderlin with Pogba in front of them. And then two quick wingers and Ibra, so Mkhi and Martial/Rashford. Unfortunately I dont see Mourinho drop Rooney for this big game, so unfortunately I see Rooney in a midfield with Pog and Carrick/Schneiderlin.

    Hope Fellaini is fit though.

And just think, we are going to have a massive height advantage on them. I think only Stones and Kolarov are even remotely tall in their lineup. Going to be interesting set pieces.

This I'd like to see!

Rooney looked a threat on the lef. New position?
This might be a solution for the coming City game, in order to bring an extra midfielder in while maintaining the 4-2-3-1 lineup. Supposing Mkhitaryan plays in the right-wing, Herrera could be added to the midfield to play at #10 or #8 (with Pogba #10).

Expect a very tight game. They'll have the majority of possession but I think if we raise our game further we can be more incisive. Definately can see some changes however cant see Rooney being dropped. I think Henrik will start. I think their defence has vunerabilities which can be got at if we just make the right passes. We now have a midfield that we can compete with and I hope Pogba can show his true worth. Keep Ageuro quiet and we have a great chance.

    Wtf is this defeatist crap.

    The inferiority complex is disturbing.

We have every reason to be confident and optimistic.

We need to park the bus and hopefully score 1 on the counter or from a set piece in this one. :)

I think we will win. I do hope Fellaini is avaliable as him and Pogba are a lot bigger than their midfielders.

Also Ibrahimovic vs John Stones and Otamendi. Stones doesn't look too physically strong and Otamendi is kinda short. Is Kompany back or injured?

I wouldn't play Mata in this match. Get the speed of Mkhitaryan + Martial on the wings. I remember martial played really well when we beat them at the Etihad.

Mourinho vs Guardiola....cant wait, damn international break
