Hopefully you have a tough match on Wednesday, so your players are still tired Saturday.
They don't have a midweek game this week. It's us with the slight disadvantage in that regard, although I expect to see quite a few first teamers rested tonight.

I hope the Mourinho haters are prepared to watch us play defensive football and proceed to beat the scousers.

They won’t know whether to celebrate or criticise.

    1-0
    Bullshit.
Been very critical of him for a month now, but I guarantee there's no one who'll be unhappy with a win...no one.

Big, big game for both teams. I'm usually always very optimistic, but for this game I'd settle for a draw, if offered. That's what I think will happen too, as Mourinho is a master at these kind of games and I suspect Klopp won't go out guns blazing.

    We don't play on Wednesday.

Agree about both sides settling for a draw, though. United have a very strong home record, and Liverpool are looking pretty good at the moment. With the gap over Chelsea having opened up, both managers would be happy with a point from this one.

I hope we’re hyped up for this, Liverpool are in good form and if we play anything like we have done recently we could be in for a bit of a beating. I usually look forward to this fixture but the way we’re playing has me concerned. Still, derbies don’t always go on form so you never know.

Looking at how we defended against Crystal Palace, I expect Mou to be a bit extra cautious.
Think we should mark Salah out of the match, he's the guy they turn to for some magic
Their midfield and defense are pretty meh, so if we can counter them, we should have some success

I'd leave McTominay on the bench and use the extra CB to match up with their front 3. I also think Mata should play but Mourinho may prefer Lingard's pace on the break, in truth I'd play Lingard or Rashford over Sanchez right now, but Jose wont.

Hopefully Jose will have realised that Young is nowhere near good enough. If he plays Young after last night we can't complain if beaten.

We were cowardly against them away from home, lets not play like a championship team twice in one season.

Assuming one, if not a couple, of Mane/Salah/Firmino will start given your lack of quality cover for those forward positions. I'd never wish an injury on a player, but if any of them end up missing the weekend there's no questioning your attack certainly looks a lot less potent.

Expecting a very tough game this Saturday. I know this goes against his perceived footballing philosophy but I could see Klopp being fairly satisfied with a draw in this one. A defeat would put you 5 points behind second, and Spurs ahead of you if they win. A draw would tighten everything up which would probably be seen as a positive for everyone bar United in the race for 2nd. Klopp certainly has it in him to think pragmatically, our game against Liverpool earlier this season proves it. We were pretty dire throughout, but Klopp's tactics never looked to force the issue on us due to the fact we were clearly setup to counter.

Yes. I expect a team like this:

    --------------Mignolet-------------
    Arnold--Matip-----Lovren--Moreno
    ------Milner-------Winjnaldum----
    -------------Lallana----------------
    Woodburn-----Solanke--------Mane

And then take off Mane after the first half unless something weird happens

    We don't play on Wednesday.

Of course. Don't know how on earth I thought United played this Wednesday with a game yesterday.

Yeah, a draw would be decent for both teams, I think.

A draw is no good to us if we have designs on second place, not when we still have to go to the Etihad

If we win this, we're nailed on for 2nd place. We'd have a 5 point cushion (or possibly 4 if Tottenham win their game on Sunday) and the only really difficult fixture we have left is Man City, which we could then afford to lose.

Our weakness. A team that presses from the front especially one that plays us like the trainers laced their waterbottles with meth. Smalling and Young will be closed down and Matic/Pogba will be hounded.

Have modest expectations on this one. I'd be okay to park the bus and take a draw

    De Gea

    Valencia
    Bailly
    Smalling
    Shaw

    Matic
    Pogba
    Lingard

    Mata
    Lukaku
    Sanchez

I honestly don't know how we should line up/set up but I wouldn't mind seeing this.

Throw Bailly in, his pace and physicality would be a plus and feel Lindelof could have a nightmare against the movement of their front 3.

Play Lingard in a midfield 3, the Di Maria Madrid role if you like for some pace and energy in the middle.

Mata after last night deserves a start and has a good record vs Liverpool.

I just want us to go at them, after last nights result and the enormity of the game the place should be bouncing. Give the crowd something to get their teeth into early and set the tone.
But...Mourinho will stifle and fear it could be a bore. 1-0 or 1-1.

That could be an option, maybe Lingard in for Mata despite the Spaniard's game-changer yesterday and previous heroics versus Liverpool.

It's funny how Jose chooses to deal with McTominay now seems so key to how we'll set up in one of our biggest matches of the season. If Jose thinks he needs a break we could go with something like you've outlined above but if he trusts him to come through it we may persist with a three man midfield.

Nah, Lingard isn't creative enough to play in the center. If Lingard is to play, it has to be upfront. If you want him to shine, play to his strengths - formidable movement and goal scoring.

We always have trouble when pressed, worries me a bit, alot actually. Pogba and Sanchez lost the ball so many times against a weaker Crystal Palace. We need to find ways to play through pressure preferably without hoofing the ball. I don't mind defensive football as long as we atleast try to play football the times we have the ball.

Wouldn't be surprised actually if we go similar to how we lined up against Chelsea.

Liverpools threat is in Mane and Salah coming centrally and interlinking with Firmino.

We'll play McTominay and Matic deep to try and force them wide. I doubt Mourinho will be too bothered about letting Henderson/Can/Ox or whoever is their midfield 3 have the ball too much.

Lukaku high on their cbs with Sanchez supporting.

Just win, by beating them soundly, by spawning a lucky goal, or by cheating...

    I don't care, just win...

Is the correct answer. Flukey offside 97th min goal would be preferable.

He kind of did made surprising team selection eg. drop Zlatan for the big Chelsea game for the pacy hungry Rashford ;) so considering Sanchez's form, it won't surprises me if Alexis benched. His run of form is still horrible.

I can see Jose go with 5 defenders this game. Liverpool's attacking department is so ridiculous, give credit where it's due. I can't trust Smalling and Lindelof CB partnership for this. Having the recently back-from-injury Bailly with them is more reassuring.
There is no chance Sanchez is benched as his workrate will be much needed, i suspect all of Lingard,Sanchez and Rashford to start for their tracking back ability.

Darmian, out of the blue, has a chance in this.

I wouldn't mind this lineup, unless Herrera is 100% fit.
Lingard's work rate and energy would be very useful in the middle. Also Mata deserves to start.
Would not be shocked if he put Young on RB either, since both him and Valencia were just as bad yesterday, and Young's crossing is better, atleast he'll hit Lukaku's head instead of knees.

Keep Sanchez as high up the field as physically possible. Maybe on the right too - we cannot afford him and Pogba being outrageously lax on the ball and losing possession in transitional sections of the field - where Liverpool excel.

Start Mata too. We never do play him in these big games and we shit ourselves on the ball due to no composure.

Naah, he's bad playing as CM. The Newcastle game as a reference. No tactical positioning discipline and quality of a proper CM.
No, Newcastle isn't the reference because that was 4-2-3-1 with him as #10. Burnley away is the reference, and we won.

    Just curious, why?
Because there's a chance that Young plays in midfield or is dropped, and Shaw looks unfit. Besides, although not lately, Mourinho trusts Darmian for though defensive jobs, like Salah. Didn't say he's definitely playing, but he should be a smart option.

This thread will be really interesting if we play shit and lose, under the new rules of the matchday thread

:D And so the myth continues. I don't remember Lingard making a good impression in that Burnley game. Then again against Burnley who defends deep hardly a threat, there is no need for too much centre midfield discipline. We're up against Liverpool next and I can't trust Lingard to play well as a CM or RCM whatever in midfield of three.

Fair points. Okay option to have for Mourinho. Darmian not having recent game times is worrying though, but yes he usually follows instructions to the tee, and excel if given a specific defensive role usually.

    ------------------DDG
Valencia--Smalling--Lindelof--Rojo (Or Darmian/Shaw/Young... in that order)
    -----------------Matic----------
    -----McTominay--------Pogba-------
    ---Lingard----------Alexis-----------
    ----------Lukaku---------------------

    Something like that...

these games are usually tight affairs settled by a single goal. I'm expecting something similar this time around.

Both sides will be scared to lose it and probably would take a draw. Vital we don't concede the first goal as that would mean we had to chase the game and it suits their counter attacking game.

I trust both the manager and the players to understand the importance of the fixture and to go all out to win it.

I think this time Liverpool will come for a win since they are on a good run and have some players who can really hurt us if Smalling, Lindelof bring their b game which is quite possible. That's why Martial and Alexis need to start in their right positions (left and right) and we need to press from the front rather than give them the ball and wait for them to come at us and try and hit them on the counter.

Our players are completely capable of running rings round their defence and need to be allowed to do that.

Lingard didn't make a particular good impression, but the team was indeed very solid. The problem is, that was before Sánchez arrived and we had to shift a lot of our players and lost some of our balance.

Dull first half with us stifling it and them looking lively. United having a go 2nd half and maybe nicking it.
