Didn't Pogba start against Southampton, without having any sort of preseason? I could see him and maybe Lukaku starting (although I'd guess he might need a bit more work to get match sharp based on his physique).

As someone said earlier, would love to see us come flying out of the traps, really intense, high tempo and give Leicester a battering. I know that's not Mourinho's style and we will most likely be more measured and pragmatic in the face of adversity. But if ever we needed a performance to blow out some of the negativity, it's now.

The Southampton game was still the second match of the league not the first one.

all i hope for in this game is that the 11 on the pitch just go out there and torch leicester. What is the best way to turn the media narrative around? 3/4/5 goal win on opening day. Just balls to the wall attack and get OT rocking. Players have things to prove, spots to win and spots to retain. They need to be rocking for the first second of kick off.

Put the transfer BS behind and smack leicester. Come on UNITED!!:devil:

    De Gea
    Darmian Bailly Smalling Shaw
    Pereira Fred
    Rashford Mata Sanchez
    Martial

Looking at this lineup, I think it's right except that Mourinho won't like that tiny midfield against Iborra's size and Ndidi's athleticsm and so a mostly fit Fellaini starts (gives us a crossing threat with Lukaku out, too) alongside Fred, with Pereira holding, and a front 3 of Sanchez, Mata and Rashford. Fellaini comes out at 60 minutes or so for McTominay or maybe another attacker if we aren't ahead.

I have a feeling with all the transfer debacle happening yesterday . Jose will start both Pogba and Lukaku just to prove a point and moan later if they are not upto speed and on mark . I really hope no ego stuff right from the start of the season . Hope everyone keeps a calm head and we make a positive start to the season .

Thank Christ, some competitive Utd football after the most depressing summer ever! Let’s hope it’s not all doom and gloom on the pitch too or it could be the beginning a long long season. At least this game is at home, if it was away after our preseason and half our key players unfit.... I think we’d be comfortably beaten. So yeah a win or an entertaining draw tonight and let’s get some momentum going and some players back ASAP.

Time to get behind the team . I reckon Jose will take the Siege mentality now with the players, we all would have liked to see more over the summer but didn't so time to move on get behind the lads and hopefully this year some of them really step up .
    C'mon United !

Here are the full quotes from Mourinho's press conference for the Leicester City game.

In terms of team news, the following six players are unavailable: Dalot, Herrera, Matic, Rojo, Romero, Valencia and Rojo.

Some of the World Cup players could play up to half an hour from the bench depending on fitness.

A couple of quotes from the embargoed part of the press conference:

    on Martial missing Munich

"He didn't have a pre-season. He had three days, he didn't have nine days. No training, no football, absolutely nothing. So Tony is in the group of players that didn't have a pre-season. You tried to make a case on it. There is no case on it. For nine days he didn't train, so it's like to start again. You have to go back. You have to start with the other players."

on Pogba and the rumoured unrest

"He arrived on Monday, happy, proud, with desire to work. He worked amazingly well on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. He's one of the players I need to speak to to see how physically and mentally strong he feels. It's the same conversation that I'm going to have with Young, Fellaini, Lingard to know how they feel to try to give us the help. If they feel they can help us, if it's 20 minutes, 10 minutes, half an hour. We don't have many solutions and we want to go with everything we have. The way I see Paul is well, is very well, but we need the words with that small group to see if they can give us a hand. It's an important match tomorrow. Every point is important. We have to try the best with every player."
Love to see Pogba start, even give him the captaincy, two fingers to the media and all the ABU's, let's give them a hiding.
    DDG
    Darmian-Bailly-Smalling-Shaw
    Fred-Periera-Pogba
    Mata-Sanchez-Rashford

Would be surprised if Pogba started as he was pretty much the last to return to training. Got a feeling Lukaku might be in with a shot of starting though - his absence from the list of players to play half an hour is interesting. Mata, Sanchez and Rashford are fairly certain to be the front three but Mourinho tends to have a curve ball with his selections.

Game day, at last! The World Cup was awesome, but you can't beat proper football.

And I've truly had enough of all the garbage in the press lately. I hate to use the term, but as far as the sports papers are concerned, it really has been a summer of fake news. It's amazing that after finishing as runners-up (in two major tournaments), we're being labelled as one of the worst in the top six. Yeah we don't always play great football these days, but we do have some great players and we aren't easy to beat.

Must admit to being properly nervous going into the game tonight, but can't wait for kick off. Hope we cruise to an easy win to shut up the naysayers, for a few minutes at least.

Would also love some players to surprise us - be epic to see the likes of Pogba and Lukaku come right back in, firing on all cylinders.

    Come on United!!

Scenes tomorrow night when Mourinho leaves Pereira out.
None of Herrera, Fellaini, Matic or Pogba fit. Would be typical Mourinho to put Fellaini with three days of training on and bench our most creative midfielder. Seriously though, if he doesn't start tomorrow he should be looking at foreign clubs Saturday morning. This is the kind of moments where we missed him last season.

Well...considering Ed's briefing about transfers, this is going to be one helluva interesting match. Very interested to see Jose's demeanor.

Lose or draw this, I reckon this place will be one helluva tinderbox!!

I woke up today with a new sense of optimism. The season begins at last and our first game is against Leicester City! They lost there best player and have not replaced him like for like. The team we put out should be more than enough to handle them and comfortably win. The team is likely to be: De Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Bailey, Shaw, Fred, Ander, Piererra, Sanchez, Mata, Rashford. There is more than enough talent in that squad and i genuinely think 3-0 should be achievable as we are at home too. Yes pre season was really really bad, i mean really really bad but that should never be an indication of how we play in the season and on results. I am not a Jose fan, cannot stand him at all, his attitude his tactics, everything, but I am 100% backing him to turn this around, he has to.

So from the comments at the press conference I’m hoping we’ll get Pogba, Lingard, Lukaku on the bench to use in the second half. Herrera out but no mention of Bailly so expect it’ll be Bailly and Smalling. Midfield I imagine will be trio of Periera, McTomminay and Fred. Front 3 picks itself.

Fellaini was at the world cup, so he is one of those that arent fit

    Herrera's injured

I am beginning to feel hopeful about this game. We will probably start Rashford, Pereira, Fred and Sanchez. All four have a point to prove for different reasons and will be eager to get going. So if we come flying off the blocks, we can overwhelm Leicester with our energy and home support. A statement victory will go a long way to dispelling the negativity.

So, assuming the team will be

    De Gea
    Darmian
    Smalling
    Bailly
    Shaw
    Fred
    Andreas
    Lingard (is he fit enough?)
    Mata
    Sanchez
    Rashford

Then on the bench: Grant,Lindelof, Lukaku, Pogba, Fellaini, Jones, Martial

With some of those world cup players getting some minutes in the final 30

Hmnnnn. If I recall well, we blew our first two opponents away last season. 8 goals in two games or something like that?
I hardly take the first two-four games too seriously even though they are important. The real deal is to be consistent over a long period especially considering the form of our strongest rivals. This takes nothing away from your post, I should say.

Lingard is not even in training for us, Bailly suffered an injury in the last game while Smallign has been back after an injury too, surely Lindelof who had a decent game against Bayer will start alongside my bet would be Bailly who will play through injury..

Lingard was training last week a few days before Pogba etc all came back, it was on his Instagram. Maybe he’s not ready to start, but he played everygame in the world cup so he’s probably as ready as Pogba, Young and Lukaku?

The transferperiod might not have been the best but thank god the season is starting again.

I guess the World cup was okay but i cant wait for the Premier league to start again.Even better that United is the one kicking of the season!

    I would go with:

    De Gea
    Bailly Smalling Lindelof
    Darmian Shaw
    Fred Pereira Pogba
    Lukaku Sanchez

Now, that's the spirit! Come on United!

Lukaku might start? That dude never stops training. Doubt he's lost fitness at all since the World Cup.

Let's go out and send a message tonight. We start the season at home with a renewed Sanchez, Fred and Pereira with a brilliant pre-season behind him. No more pre-season. Today is day one and where it really counts. Let's start in the best way possible.

"Brilliant". Played a couple of pub teams and reserves of other unfit Premier League-sides/Milan/Real. Let's chill down with the superlatives. Pereira was perfectly alright, not brilliant just because he managed to string a few passes together.

FINALLY! Didn't think I'd get that match day giddiness on top of the pre-season and this close to a WC. But I feel like it's ages since I've seen football!
