    --------------Romero
    McNair--Smalling--Blind--Rojo
    -----Herrera---Schneiderlin
    Pereira------Rooney-----Young
    --------------Wilson

Going too gung-ho with youth players perversely does youth no favours. They end up with no leaders around then and it strips away any actual opportunity they have to shine.

    My thoughts with this is;
    Romero should get a game
Smalling-Blind-Rojo need more time to gel and work as a unit so they all play. McNair in at rightback to give him game time.
Strong midfield to control the game and give Pereira and Wilson a chance to shine. Young in there as a consistent provider for Wilson to make sure he's getting enough of the ball to influence the game. Rooney playing again because frankly he needs to improve and dropping him almost never helps.

    DDG
    Valencia - McNair - Rojo - Blackett
    Schneiderlin - Herrera
    Pereira - Fellaini - Young
    Rooney
Give Rooney a chance to play his way into some manner of form, I guess.

If he plays well, it might bode well for the next PL match.

If he continues as badly as he's been, it might convince LvG to drop him.

    Win-win, kinda.

    Ok my team would be

    ----------De Gea----------
    Valencia-McNair-Blind-Rojo
    ----------Carrick----------
    -----Herrera--Fellaini-----
    Mata-----Rooney-----Young

Strong side and gives plenty of game time to those who haven't played much

Agreed with everything except Blackett is on loan at Celtic, so maybe Darmian at LB or one of Smalling or Blind starts and Rojo plays LB again. The only other thing I can think of is Young can play LB and Wilson gets his wing spot, if we care more about resting defenders with the Shaw injury then going far in the League Cup.

My money is on Darmian at LB. He only played 45 against Southampton and he has a healthy backup at his position (Valencia) to give him rest/compete with him throughout the season.

I hope it's the linuep rick mentioned above. That'll give the guys time that aren't finding their way in the first team. Young, Valencia, Fellaini and Rojo Especially as they'll be important if we are to succeed in this fixture rich schedule.

Play Rooney and Wilson at any cost.... Rooney needs to be cranking up. He seemed so slow and clueless yesterday.

    de Gea
    Tony McNair Rojo Young
    Herrera Schneiderlin
    Lingard Rooney Pereira
    Wilson

I think Blind and Rojo need to play, they need to build an understanding like Blind had with Shaw.

@Niall Think it would be nice if on the banner where it says date/kick off e.t.c you also mention which channel it's on.

Which channel is this game on? :)

I won't be adding that to the page banner, but @Invictus does the awesome first post content now, so if you ask him nicely he might consider adding it there.

Of course, which channel it's on depends on what country you live in :)

I don't think that we'll see many changes. LVG will remember well the disaster last season, when we got humiliated by MK Dons.

    My bet would be:

    De Gea

    Valencia Smalling Rojo Blind

    Schweinsteiger Herrera

    Mata Fellaini Young

    Rooney

With two or three of McNair, Pereira, Lingard and Wilson getting some minutes in the second half. From those four, I think that only McNair might start.

I'd like starts for Wilson and Pereira, possibly McNair too. Lingard to come off the bench.

Jones trained last week so maybe he can be in contention for this game

    ----------------------------------Romero---------------------------------
    Valencia----------------Jones-----------Mc Nair---------------------Rojo
    -----------------------Schneiderlin-------Herrera----------------------
    Pereira---------------------------Fellaini---------------------------Young
    -----------------------------------Wilson---------------------------------

    ------------------------De Gea-----------------------------
Valencia ------ McNair ------ ----Jones ----------Rojo

    ------------------------Carrick------------------------
    --------------Herrera-----------Fellaini--------------

    Young-----------------Wilson-------------Pereira

Will Bbc show any highlights of the league cup or do Sky only have the rights?

Swap De Gea and Rooney for Romero and Felliani and I think that'll be our starting 11.

I think Rooney needs all the help he can get in trying to get back into form. Playing him against weak opposition is a no brainer really, if Louis is insistent upon fielding him regardless of performances.

Agree on Romero, though last season didn't Dave play every single game apart from the last game of the season?

Hope to see a few fringe players given a start such as McNair, Valencia, Young, Fellaini and I suppose Herrera would be classed as one at the moment...

As for who to give a break to, I'd be looking at Memphis, Blind, Carrick, Darmian, and Mata.

Probably Pereira and Wilson from the bench if we're winning.

    De Gea
    Valencia Smalling McNair Rojo
    Schweinsteiger
    Herrera Fellaini
    Martial Rooney Young
    ---
Romero; Blind; Schneiderlin, Pereira, Lingard; Memphis, Wilson

Is Wilson even at United still? Neville said that he doesn't know what has happened to him. Alien abduction?

Yes, VG confirmed he didn't go out on loan in his presser a few before last.

I don't think we should under rate Ipswich, nor their desire to win this, I'd like Wilson/ Pereira/ McNair etc to get minutes, but I think this will be harder than most think.

Try Young out at left back, Martial can stay in the team to settle him in more. I'd like Pereira to start and Wilson to get at least 30 mins.

Valencia, McNair, Young and Fellaini starting I would imagine. Expecting Herrera & Schneiderlin to be the midfield two + I think Rooney will start. Hopefully Pereira and Wilson start.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see Young at LB with McNair and Rojo at CB.

Need players like Herrera, Fellaini, Rojo, Valencia and Young to get minutes but also just as important to see the young players.

So hopefully see something like this

    -Romero-
-Valencia- -McNair- - Rojo- - Young-

    -Bastian-
    -Fellaini- -Herrera-

    -Pereira- -Wilson- -Mata-

    My early prediction is

    ---------------------De Gea----------------------
    Valencia-----Smalling-----McNair---------Blind
    --------------Herrera------Carrick---------------
    Pereira--------------Rooney---------------Young
    ----------------------Wilson----------------------

I think this would be a strong enough team to get the victory as well as giving certain players a much needed rest. I think Memphis, Martial, schweinsteiger will be used from the bench to inject some urgency late on. Because of the Mk Dons defeat last year I'm not sure LVG will be top risky with his selection but I'm pretty sure Wilson and pereira will get some game time. Rooney needs to play to try and find some form (we can pray) and I think we will get the job done comfortably, 4-1 Utd.

Ipswich are one of the good Championship sides and it won't be easy, but if the ''fringe'' players can't be trusted to play against a Championship side at Old Trafford, why are they even at the club? They should be playing in this game, as we're in four competitions and have a thin squad as it is without starting our best players in an almost meaningless game (in the grand scheme of things).

Pereira, Lingard, McNair and Wilson should all be starting this one. We need to use the full squad and the younger players deserve to play. I want us to do well in every tournament, but as a big club that has bigger goals this season, we should be seeing the COC as a way to give the youngsters a go or some of them they might get disillusioned.

Looking forward to seeing Pereira. He did very well in the US and deserves more chances IMO.

Good points. I do seem to recall van gaal not giving the back up goalies much game time last year though am not completely certain. The opportunity for rooney to bag a few easy goals is also tempting despite his form.

eta: agree with scorpy. Let's play the kids!!

We made hard work of playing near full strength sides against Cambridge, Preston and Yeovil. I can't imagine we will weaken too much.

Chelsea and City struggled in the cups against lower league sides with what were very strong squads. It seems playing a full 11 of reserves and fringe players is a thing of the past. I think we could possibly get McNair and Pereira in there. Maybe even Wilson at a push, but I don't think it will be more than that outwith the crop of usual starters.

It was a tradition at Ajax to give the back-up goalie the last match of the season if it wasn't important. I hope van Gaal hasn't brought it with him. Dave for president and all that.

I'd love to see Valencia and Young but only because I want to see how Martial handles crosses. I don't think he's a prolific header but his strength and calm should see him win some.

    What i hope to see-

    Romero

    Darmian McNair Rojo Young

    Schweinsteiger

    Herrera Pereira

    Wilson Fellaini Lingard

You guys that dont have Rooney in the team, you realise that he always needs some game after an injury to get back to some kind of form?

Great article in The Observer yesterday about the rivalry between Van Gaal and Mick McCarthy ... or at least the animosity between them!

Ipswich’s McCarthy would find putting one over Van Gaal with Ipswich just capital

Manchester United play Ipswich Town in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday and, though it is not quite up there with, say, José Mourinho versus Arsène Wenger, there is an intriguing subplot bearing in mind the history between Mick McCarthy and Louis van Gaal.

The last time they faced each other was September 2001, as managers of Republic of Ireland and Holland, ahead of a do-or-die World Cup qualifier in which Roy Keane put in a performance that was every bit as epic as his tour de force for United against Juventus in the Champions League semi-final two years earlier.

Van Gaal had prepared for the game in Dublin by suggesting that Ireland’s manager was likely to be sacked in the event of a Dutch victory and, as a barometer of how that went down, there are a couple of extracts from Mick McCarthy’s World Cup 2002 Diary that adequately sum it up.

“Louis van Gaal is starting to annoy me,” McCarthy writes on the day before the game. “He has been quoted on my employment prospects if Ireland lose and he seems none too concerned at the prospect of Ireland sacking their manager and me losing my job. That disappoints me. There is no need for Louis van Gaal to get involved in Irish football politics. Hopefully we can wipe the smile off his face.”

Then we get to the day of the match and McCarthy’s final team talk. “It’s about passionate hearts and calm heads,” he explains. “I ask the players to give me the opportunity to walk up to Louis van Gaal afterwards and say: ‘Unlucky.’ Just give me the chance to look him in the eye, shake his hand and say: ‘Bad luck.’”

Keane clattered Marc Overmars with a tackle straight from kick-off that made our bones vibrate in the pressbox, so goodness knows what it felt like to be the recipient. Jason McAteer scored and Lansdowne Road has rarely sounded better.

Van Gaal ended up with four strikers on the pitch but none of them could score, even though Gary Kelly was sent off with half an hour to play. Ireland went through to the World Cup, via a play-off against Iran. Holland bowed out – and Van Gaal went home to a national inquest, including the observation in Brabants Dagblad that his philosophy and excuses were “bullshit”.

Just before the World Cup, McCarthy and Van Gaal found themselves at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam at the same time. Van Gaal, who had resigned as bondscoachwas on his way to Barcelona where he had been reinstalled at the Camp Nou. McCarthy smiled and shook his head. “If the tables were turned there’s no way I’d have got Barcelona, is there?” he asked the journalists in his company. It was a fair question.

And one imagines he would love to say “unlucky” again.
