Excitement is building for this one, expect a similar team to the charity shield.

    Onana
    Mazraoui Maguire Martinez Dalot
    Casemiro Mainoo
    Amad Mount Bruno Rashford

Garnacho, Zirkzee, De Ligt, Zirkzee off the bench
We got a good deal getting 2 brothers

Really difficult to pick a starting line up, what with the injured, new and walking wounded we have.

I can't fathom why people are picking Amad and leaving out Garnacho, or picking Casemiro and leaving out Mount ?
Hoijland is supposed to be fit, so why pick Rashford and not him?

    Hojlund isn't fit.

Casemiro and Mount play in different positions. Anyone who picks Rashford as a striker honestly needs their eyes testing at this point.

    My shout is

    -------------------Onana-----------------------------
Dalot - De Ligt - Martinez - Mazraoui
    ----------- Casemiro - Mainoo---------------
    --------Amad - Bruno - Garnacho---------
    -------------------Zirkzee--------------------------

I'd play Mount as an AM, we are at home against supposedly weaker opposition.
Didn't know about Hoijland, he's not listed on the Physio room as unavailable.

I don't see Zirkzee starting having not played a minute. I think the rest is spot on, but probably Mount instead of Zirkzee and maybe Bruno and Mount swap.

Yes it's definitely more of a hope than a prediction. Think you're right that we'll play with two AMs again in basically a flat front 4.

Which I like to be honest, because we actually play some very neat and intricate passing. Zirkzee will also play like an AM anyway, so it would be better he came into that system. Garnacho will be the pace in behind that Rashford was and Amad will keep doing his thing!

I wouldn't usually have him throwing De Ligt and Mazraoui straight in, but he knows them both extremely well, it's not much of a risk. Who knows though.

They won their pre-season game against Benfica (1-0, Iwobi), lost to Sevilla (1-2, Smith-Rowe) and beat Hoffenheim (2-0, Smith-Rowe & Traore).

    Possible line-up against us:

Leno - Tete/Castagne, Diop, Bassey, Robinson - Lukic, Andreas, Smith-Rowe - Traore, Muniz, Iwobi

Thanks. Not so shabby than. Also Fulham seem to play really well at OT for some reason. Big test

For those still interested, we did not play our opening fixture last season against Wolves on a Friday, that game was actually a Monday night game.

The last time we did play our opening fixture on a Friday was back in August of 2018 when we beat Leicester 2-1 at home thanks to a Pogba peno and a late winner by Shaw.

Not sure why we'd go box midfield again, would rather see Zirkzee up top instead
Hasn't had a minute of pre-season so I'm expecting him to get eased in, even when he's in though he's more of a false 9 so would basically be a box midfield still.

Offers far more than Mount in the final third though
How do we know when he hasn't played a minute, and Mount was injured all last season and looked dangerous in preseason. I think once Zirkzee is up to speed he'll play over Mount, but expect Mount to get the opportunity as he's fully up to speed and there are going to be quite a few around him that aren't. Bruno, Mainoo etc

A myth that has already been dispelled by another poster.
1W-2D-13L with a -25 GD in the last 20 years at Old Trafford.
I'm surprised by that record. I guess the draws and losses to bottom half clubs stick out in your head more.

That 2-2 draw under Moyes and that loss under Fergie when Coleman was their manager are 2 games that instantly spring to mind for me. I'm assuming the latter was just over 20 years ago as they obviously got that win last season.

Nobody who hasn’t featured in preseason is going to start on Friday, with the possible but unlikely exception of Mazraoui at LB.

If Zirkzee, Hojlund or De Ligt are going to feature, it will be off the bench.

    I’d pick:

    Onana
    Dalot Maguire Martinez Mazraoui
    Mainoo Casemiro
    Amad Mount Garnacho
    Bruno

But I think it will be:

    Onana
    Dalot Evans Maguire Martinez
    Mainoo Casemiro
    Garnacho Mount Rashford
    Bruno

Amad is playing great stuff, he is currently the best option on the right.

On the left we have Rashford and Garnacho. Rashford is more matchfit and has played well (except for his finishing).

We have played without a striker because Højlund is injured and Zirkzee not matchfit.

Casemiro and Collyer are our only dm‘s.

Why aren’t more people putting Fernandes in the false 9?

That’s where Ten Hag has played him for the last 4 or 5 games. And we’ve played quite well in all of them

We also looked good in those 3 games at the end of last season (Newcastle, Brighton, City) with Bruno in the false 9. I guess the question is how do you fit Amad, Garnacho and Rashford into a lineup with Bruno as the false 9? The obvious answer would be to drop Rashford but I think Ten Hag trusts him as the experienced goalscorer amongst those 3. Maybe Garnacho coming off the bench vs Fulham would make sense.

Will Amad and Garnacho both start? That’s the real question. Both deserve to start. But it means having Rashford upfront and he’s useless upfront.
This is very frustrating and why I don't envy ETH having to make this call. I think Amad and Garnacho deserve to be the starting wingers, but making this call for the first game of the season, at home, after getting snubbed by England, might lead to problems with Rashford for the entire year. And I don't think a disgruntled Rashford is good for the squad.

As sad as it is, I think Amad and Garnacho both would handle the snub much more maturely and wouldn't kick up a fuss. If anything I think they both would treat it as inspiration to put their head down and work harder, which I don't think would be Rashford's reaction.

I am just guessing here, of course, and could be way off.

Having said that, I think Rashford should get the start on the left but if he is having a similar performance to that of last year, meaning moping about defensively and then either slow passes backwards or dribbling full-speed ahead straight into defenders when he gets the ball, then he should get hooked no later than the 60th minute.

    Onana
    Dalot Maguire Martinez Mazraoui
    Mainoo Casemiro
    Amad Mount Rashford
    Bruno

If Mazraoul isn't ready then I guess we will have to go with Martinez at leftback and De Ligt partnering Harry. But I really don't like that and don't think Martinez should ever play at LB.

And god I hope the lads are motivated after getting humiliated at home by this lot last year. I'll be thrilled with a win, no matter how it comes.

The easy decision is to leave Garnacho on the bench, and use his lack of preseason as the reason

Muniz is an excellent striker, and Robinson at leftback is also quality. Amad will have to work extremely hard to help Dalot.

But them not having the Portuguese guy in the middle will be a huge loss for them. Surely we have enough quality to beat them.

    Surely.

Benfica don’t look very good nowadays though. Got beat first game of the season 2-0. That being said Fulham do have some dangerous players and we’ll have to be on top of our game to get 3 pts.

    What's Mazraoui's preferred position?
RB. But can play left apparently. Similar to Dalot. Hope he starts at RB though. I’d hate for him to get judged on the opposite side when it’s not his preferred position.

I actually like Garnacho more on the right than on the left. Which is a problem because Amads been playing really well and I really like him, love watching him with his close control and dribbling. And that’s his natural position. I’d stick Garnacho on the bench for now and bring on like against city where he can make an impact against tired legs.

Hopefully, though he missed the game at OT last season when we were utterly dreadful. Hoping for better this season.

Genuinely don't know what to expect team wise. Wouldn't shock me if he throws one or both of the new defenders straight in as he's managed them before and they know his way. Also wouldn't surprise me if he says they're not match fit and goes with the same back four as Saturday.

I think Garnacho plays so either Amad will end up extremely unlucky (I can't see him dropping Rashford) or Mount will drop out, Rashford central and Fernandes at number 10.

He has played well as the false 9 though back end of last season and on Sat so could stick with that. I think Zirkzee will be on the bench.

All in all, I've no idea which way he'll twist. But at least there's some options (and hopefully another to come in the midfield before deadline).
