This is actually a joke at this point surely? Why are they dropping like flies all at once?

Yeah don't know where all his assist went when we signed him. He is scoring more but he is rarely assisting. This season he created nothing and he is passenger in games.
He's just not suited to playing on the right. He does a job (because he's a pro) but his game there is limited. Besides he was only really thriving there when we played 433 with LvG and he had Herrera behind him - they clicked together. Even then he'd always cut in on his left, rarely went out wide and delivered crosses. He's at his best behind the striker. Maybe Mourinho reckons Mikhi is better than him there?

In this formation, the guy who plays on the right has a completely different job than the one playing on the left. It's basically a playmaker with freedom to drift inside, and Mata has been very good at that. The manager already said he's most valuable when in possession, so there's no way he's going to drop him come Saturday.

These lot are supposedly reliable, so Martial's condition was bad enough to require a scan.

Anthony Martial limped off during the second-half of their Champions League thrashing of CSKA Moscow after assisting both of Romelu Lukaku's goals and scoring his fifth of the campaign to fuel concerns over a growing injury list.

However, photographers said he was not limping at the airport so hopefully his withdrawal was precautionary.

    Precautionary apparently.

What exactly happened to Jones and when?
Probably won't find out until today's presser, but Jones and Carrick apparently have 'impact injuries' sustained in training (I think on Monday) that aren't too serious, but are enough to keep them out of training until next week at least.

They haven't even scored a goal yet in the league. If we don't smash them by at least 3, I'm going to be a bit disappointed, not going to lie.

Should absolutely hammer them. Plus, their best defender is Ineligible.

This is about quality, not formations. Of course he is a leftie on the right.. i don't particularly like this aspect of attacking play that is almost standard, but I am no manager and they do know best. It's all subjective... but I am talking about what he (Mata) is bringing to the team, because it isn't goals, chances, or assists. You telling a Rashford or a Martial playing out there wouldn't be more effective? Mata keeps the ball well, but who doesn't in that team? I expect an attacking player at any top club to be able to keep the ball pretty well. What I don't see from Mata is any more than that. And for us to actually win big titles, well, we are going to need players to do more than simply keep the ball pretty well. Guy is invisible for long aspects of too, too, too many matches. Look at Ozil (he no longer fancies Arsenal..) but he simply has more of an effect on a game. And let's not discuss a David Silva. Willian plays on the right of a three, and is right-footed, and would easily be more effective than Mata. And Jose likes Willian!

I am just making a point, Mata, in my personal opinion, does not seem to provide the impact that a player, playing in that position, who has so much Premiership experience, at a big, big ambitious club, should be providing. Lindgaard can frustrate the nuts out of me, his game needs to mature, but I would play him way ahead of Mata. At lease he runs beyond the forwards, and makes things happen, just through being a little busy. I want Mata to prove me wrong, and remember, Jose sold the guy at Chelsea and replaced him with Willian. What does that tell you.

You cannot say Rashford, Lukaku or even Mkhitaryan, maybe Martial, keep the ball in advanced positions better than Mata. And there's an important effectiveness to that.

Hopefully jose lets the horses run free again, a chance to stick a few past a struggling side, dont hold back. One really good thing (aside from teh obvious) about our high scores is that it will be helping to restore the fear teams used to have about playing United.
Now managers can see how well we can counter and have to adjust their plans accordingly, managers will now be thinking at 2-0 down they need to shut up shop otherwise if they push to get back in the game they could get a spanking

I see what you're saying, and expected this response, technically (and I am sure statistically) Mata probably retains possession as well, if not better than most of our forward players (ie he finds a red shirt...) and there is merit and importance in that. But what does that actually suggest? I would think that the other attacking players we have commit opponents, have more touches (in critical areas..) have more shots, attempt more passes, go past more players etc... they 'try' to do more than Mata in attacking areas. Retaining possession in the last third is key, v v important... but you need an edge with that possession. Remember how we looked last year, and year before?

I would take the players who make things happen, and lose the ball occasionally, rather than someone who keeps the ball..... and you're not actually quite sure how he is affecting the match.

We're going to be up 4-0 until the 89th minute where Palace will get their first goal of the season.

    Tomorrow's game plan
    Mourinho said:

We are doing well. We have to play against every club home and away and when I look at the fixtures I only look to how much time we have to recover match to match that’s the only thing that concerns me.

The mentality is important because we played Wednesday night and didn’t get back until 5am.

    Pogba injury update
Mourinho has said his injury is classes as “ long-term” like Rojo and Ibrahimovic.

Pogba cannot play tomorrow and it’s not an injury that I can have the hope with Valencia or Jones. Long term injuries I don’t speak about them, Ibra, Pogba and Rojo.

On paper Palace at home is the perfect game with a few injuries and knocks in the squad. We should have far too much for Palace and be able to get a few men back or further along in their recovery after the international break.
