Lack of matches last year and the injuries is what took us so long to settle into a groove last year. Hopefully both of those issues go away this season and we'll see the best of the philosophy come out soon. Another clean sheet would be great. Should have no excuse to not score a couple past them at home either.

I hope we don't rotate for the sake of rotating. It's only our third game after all.

Only changes I'd like to see are Schweinsteiger for Carrick, Herrera starting and perhaps Fellaini. Other than that, I'd stick with the same team that faced Villa. I'd give Rooney another chance, but if he performs like last night he should be dropped for the Newcastle game. His performance yesterday was unacceptable.

Not rotation per se, but I'd drop Januzaj, Carrick and Memphis for Fellaini, Young and Schweinsteiger.

    ------------Romero
    Darmian Smalling McNair Shaw
    ---Schweinsteiger Carrick
    ----------Herrera
    Januzaj Hernandez Young

Johnstone, Valencia, Blackett, Blind, Fellaini, Memphis, Wilson

Hopefully a comfortable win, I think we deserve one of those.

Being back on the European stage I want the crowd to be loud and make us proud. I can see Rojo featuring in this one to gain some fitness. I would be happy to see Rooney start but he does need to show something more and hopefully he will do just that. If we do go 1 0 up I want to see us go for a few more goals instead of settling on what we have, lets end the tie if we can. Three wins out of three would be very pleasing too.

On a side note is nice that united matches are coming thick and fast.

I'm hoping we fire a few goals past them to be honest. No reason why we can't.

Normally, I'd say we are good for 0 or 1 goal in a game, but as its a CL game and our team will be fired up, anything is possible.
So, I think we will win this 2-0.

Rest of the list are out for the Utd games though. New signing Ibini also injured.
Yes, I really feel for Ibini. I have just come from watching him have a stellar season for my home town club Sydney FC and was pretty excited when I heard he was in with a shot to make the champions league. Then broke his leg in training. Sometimes football can be cruel.

Are you not aware of LVG's philosophy?
LVG has repeatedly stated that the Captain will ALWAYS play.
    Rooney is undroppable.

Schweinsteiger still doesn't look fit enough to me to start so I think Herrera will start in a 2 man midfield with Schneiderlin. That will be the only difference from the game against Villa. I think van Gaal will be cautious with the team selection in this first game and go with close to his best team, he'll want to finish the game in the first leg (especially at home).

    Hernandez

    Young--------------------------Januzaj

    Fellaini-------Herrera

    Schweinsteiger

    Shaw------Rojo-----Smalling-------Valencia

    De Gea

I can see Schweinsteiger starting ahead of Schneiderlin due to his European experience. Januzaj won't be playing for the lack of it. Fellaini may play due to him being Belgian.

    .....................Romero......................
    Darmian...Smalling...Blind...Shaw
    ..............Carrick...Schweiny..........
    .......Mata.....Fellaini....Memphis...
    .....................Rooney......................

Why are people including the likes of Fellaini, McNair and Wilson?

This isn't a no mark game. It's a couple of games we spent the whole of last season working towards. Losing would make all that progress redundant.

Match rhythm is critical for Van Gaal. He'll only play players who have that: the players that have played minutes for us so far.

Rojo is the only returnee we could see, I think. Even then, Van Gaal would be silly to disrupt a working defence.

    Spot on.

I highly doubt we'll even see Rojo. The more the defence get used to playing with each other, the better. We've been desperate for a settled back line for a couple of years now.

I think there are too many who think this is easy peasy and just throw the kids in. It is vital for the prestige of this club to get into the group stages. We don't want to be falling into the Europa League.

Agreed. We should defintely get through but think people are mistaking this as playing a League One standard team at home or something. They're not.

I don't think we'll see him either, but I think he'll get minutes over the coming weeks. I think Van Gaal sees him as a first team regular going forward.

This rotation talk is like a lingering sickness. It's like we're still being managed by Ferguson as we approach a European game. Gone are the days we shift three quarters of the team around from game to game.

We'll see a couple of changes, yes. You would envisage Bastian over Carrick for one. But talk of Valencia at right back ahead of Darmian. Why? We're two games into the season and already people want to pointlessly rotate one of our best players so we can play a weaker one in his place. It's ludicrous, really, and I hope Van Gaal sticks by the core of his team.

Hoping to see something like the below

    .....................Romero......................
    ..Darmian...Smalling......Blind.....Shaw
    ..............Basti...Schneiderlin..........
    .......Mata.....Herrera....Memphis...
    .....................Rooney......................

I think we will see strong line-up Young back in the side, same back 4 maybe with Valencia in for Darmian, Fellaini and Pereira on the bench, Herrera in the starting line up for Memphis

I can see McNair, Pereira, Lingard and Wilson all either starting this or getting decent game time. Probably Schweini in midfield too. I don't think Johnstone will start.

No room for experimenting on Tuesday. I think we will see a really experienced side with the youth/ inexperienced players on the bench. Get the job done in the first leg then experiment.

Young, Fellaini, Valencia possibly back in the side.

    Too risky for me.
Really? A team like this would be solid I think:

    -----------Romero
    Darmian--Smalling--Rojo--Shaw
    -------Schweini-Herrera
    Mata-------Pereira----Young
    ------------Chicha

With Wilson coming on for Chicha and possibly McNair for Darmian or Rojo. Lingard might not get a game.

I think Chicharito will play as Rooney was shocking vs Villa and Memphis will be rested. Looking forward to seeing him again if he does.

I agree. It looks like a good team but you know what LVG is like. He's ultra risk-averse and i dont think he will want to take any chances at all. I cant see Pereira, Wilson or McNair starting because they haven't had a sniff in yet, and I think LVG will be seeing this as probably our most important game so far. We simply cannot afford to miss out on the CL group stages and if we can wrap this up in the first leg then this will be preferable. This is my reasoning behind him probably wanting as much experience here as possible.

I don't see LvG tampering too much with a game we could do with getting a few goals in as we are just getting going. I think Schweinsteiger might start over Carrick but the only change beyond that I see is the #10 role could go to any of 3 or 4 players.

No chance he'll feck around with making changes for this, and rightly so.

Too many people underestimating the importance of this game.

Yeah I agree with this. I think the #10 should go to Mata, with Depay on the right wing but you know what LVG's like. I could even see Rooney as the #10 with Hernandez as our CF. it wouldn't surprise me at all. Rooney has been woeful as the lone wolf.

I can see van Gaal playing Fellaini as our #10.
