Casemiro is so much better further up the pitch and only be utilised there this season.

Honestly, that has been his whole career. He never sat as a proper DM for Madrid. Kroos was always the deep playmaker while Casemiro went hunting for the ball. More Gattuso than Makelele.

Mainoo, Bruno, Martinez understandably don't look fit. Expect better from Rashford.

Amad I love you so much.
Bruno looks fine to be honest fitness wise. Martinez's issue is just he's a left back.

    Mainoo yeah looks off it

Amad is very good but we need to get him on the ball more. If our midfield could involve him more consistently we'd have a much bigger goal threat.

Grew into the game a bit more towards the end of that half.

A few nice moments. Terrible finishing though, as usual.

First 30 mins was crap, then some pretty decent moves and patterns, mainly involving Cas and Amad who have been our best so far.

Still heavily transitoned based, which is the same as his Ajax team was despite the thoughts otherwise.

City have been crap as well outside of Bobb, Haaland is a proper donkey at times.

    Decent half.

Only complaints really would be the two missed chances, you simply half to put at least one of those away.

Overall, playing well so far, yeah they are missing Rodri, Silva, Foden and KDB through the midfield. But Utd have grown into it after a slow start. Amad needs to be on the ball more, he's shown the most intent in attack.

We looked good once we got into their final third, Amad being the standout but some good play between all our attackers at times, the press from the front has looked good for the most part too with decent shape and timing of when to go so not leaving those huge gaping holes in the middle as much.

Build up has been our stumbling block so far, we really don't seem to use our midfield very well in this aspect as we either bypass them entirely with 60/70 yard long balls or the defence just pass it among themselves.

City obviously not at full strength or anywhere near it but they have some very good young talent by the looks of it, Lewis and Bobb especially are causing us problems.

Solid last 20 mins. Amad and Casemiro definitely the standouts. The worst Martinez performance I've seen for us since his first couple games. Hopefully just due to fitness and he'll be back to near his best for Fulham. Mainoo and Mount were barely involved at all. Need much more from them. Bruno and Rashford with some good and not so good moments. Dalot a couple good tackles but also was skinned by Doku. Maguire has struggled a bit. Evans pretty solid. Onana nothing to do yet.

More of the same 2nd half as last 20 mins. Zirkzee will probably come on. Curious to see how he does.

We need to take off either Bruno or Mount. You can't play out against this City team without a ball playing first phase midfielder, and we don't have any height when we play in over the top. Bring Zirkzee on.

Last season, we tend to play poorly in the 2nd half. Let's see if we have finally turned the corner.

looking at the analysis, maguire is still marking nobody/not closing space. we really need to rid of him, in my opinion

Haaland is such a boringly limited footballer.

Amazing scorer mind, but don't watch him for the beauty of the game.

Aye, there's just nothing likeable about him. Chris Wood could score 20+ goals in that City team.

    United half-time player ratings

Here is how chief United writer Samuel Luckhurst has rated the Reds' players out of 10 following the first 45 minutes at Wembley...

    Onana

    Little to do. 6

    Dalot

Rinsed by Doku for most of the half. 5

    Maguire

Coped decently in a busy half. 6

    Evans

    Not looked too comfortable. 5

    Martinez

Let off the hook when McAtee hit the post. 6

    Casemiro

At his most effective in the final third. 7

    Mainoo

    Some nice early touches. 6

    Amad

Came alive and should have scored. 7

    Mount

Started quietly but became more involved. 6

    Rashford

    Should have scored. 5

    Fernandes

    Working hard. 6
So harsh on Dalot. He’s been good and shut down a number of Doku’s dribbles. Doku will beat every fullback in football a couple of times a game that’s literally his entire game.

6 passes from Mason Mount that half. Lowest in the side. I know he’s the best counter presser final phase trigger opponent low block half turn enganche, I just can’t get behind these sorts of players.

Yep, and he's bloody good at it still.

This is the disadvantage of being a defender.

All the duels Dalot won today have been ignored because he got nutmegged once.

Wild to see a winger try to square it across the box. I wouldn't have minded Amad shooting, but seeing him trying to feed a teammate is nice. It's been awful watching our wingers be super greedy for years.

Erik has to be more pleased than Pep. We grew into the match, but our end product is still suboptimal.

If we can improve our finishing this season we can be in the conversation for top four. But if we can’t score on glorious chances, we’re looking at another finish somewhere between 5th and 8th place.

The main positive is that tactically we look miles better than last season. From watching the pre-season, it’s nice to see us stick to this 4-4-2 in defence. We still struggled with building out from the back for large parts of the game, but that’s always going to be an issue with Evans at the the back and to a lessor degree Maguire too. You can only do so much with the players at his disposal right now.

Hojlund must be in tears watching that

Made some good chances and missed them. Pretty consistent with the rest of our preseason. I don't watch any other sides but I struggle to believe everyone else is missing these chances as often as we are.

Which is just stupid isn’t it really. It never ceases to amaze me just how many people lack critical analysis.

Ugarte is the same type of player. So we'll still lack a sitting midfielder which is an issue.

Kakasemiro wondering how the feck he doesn't have two assists.

Didn't City do the same in the 1st half?

Yeh I struggle to fully warm to him as a player. Has to be said though, I don’t think this is anywhere near his optimum role.

The deep passing can come from our CBs to get it into Mainoo and Bruno more, along with the full backs who are very good with that. Just depends on the system.

We don't really seem to want one which is fine if you are playing a geggenpress-style. We seem to be neither that nor a possession team so not really sure what ETH's ideal midfield looks like.

    Doing alright.

That said, I'm generally less concerned about how we set up against a side like City (who are obviously better than us) than regular PL sides where we have more expectation of dominating.

So regardless of how this game goes, I'll read a lot more into the early league games against Fulham and Brighton.

Half of two halves, first 25 mins or so was poor. Grew into the game after that with a few decent moves.
