    Succinct summary.

Di Maria, one quality pass aside, seemingly did everything wrong on the ball. He found space, but gave the ball away unbelievably. Should have played Rooney in for a simple finish too.

Seems churlish to moan about anything after that game though.

Horrible to watch last 15mins, very nervous. Seemed written that Rooney would score to end that 10 year drought.
He seems to score the penalties that matter, like game winners or to level us up, but often misses the ones when we're winning.

I thought di Maria was sloppy, but i'd fault Rooney more on that play. A one looking to receive the ball, you should be looking to where the ball can be played. Either way, I thought Rooney and di Maria didn't play that well, but had a nice assist on Mata's second.

Di Maria's contribution was largely negative. Also thought that Rooney was sub-par again at Anfield. Fellaini was very good as was Mata.
Oddly negative post considering the performance and result. Rooney didn't shine that much but did a lot of good things for the team. Like I say, seems strange to discuss the odd player who wasn't excellent in a top performance (in the main) and wonderful result.

I'm buzzing. We taught them a footballing lesson in the first half. Can't use enough superlatives to describe Mata's second goal and performance in general.

First half was almost flawless. We didn't let them have the ball for 25 feckin minutes! Fellaini, Herrera and Carrick in midfield were superb! A master class from Mata from the inside-right hand side. All our best footballers passing the ball around for fun and Liverpool were clueless!

Didn't like how we sat back after going 2-0 up. It just let's them get back in and gives them confidence that they didn't have! It would have been a disaster if they equalised.

Rooney didn't have the best game but not as bad as some are making out. He done lots of good things for us today which RVP and Falcao simply wouldn't have been able to do.

Fantastic performance and I'm truly expecting us to beat Villa next AND City at Old Trafford. We have finally turned a corner.

I can't stop laughing at that Mata goal. Amazing. The first was great but second was just epic.

Beat Liverpool away we can beat ANYONE. We can play much better too.

    Gonna watch MOTD tonight:)

Shout out to the away fans and our lads for keeping their nerve.

Not sure what was worse, the way we played for the first 30 mins when most of the team went AWOL, Lallana's miss near the end of the first, when we were clearly on the front foot, a miss that changed the course of the whole match (because BR wouldn't have subbed him off and Gerrard on at HT if we were 1-1), Gerrard for a moment of utter insanity, that it was such a shite match with just 4 shots apiece, or that the 10 men failed to complete a comeback from 0-2 down even though giving it all they had and even had the better of United over maybe 30 mins of the 2nd half, after Mata's brilliant second goal. At the end of the day probably United deserved the win for their overall performance.

As I said earlier in this thread, the biggest bonus either team can take from winning this match will be the confidence that they can go on to take a Top 4 slot and that conversely that the loser will now have to re-group .... In some ways it's good that there are 2 weeks until our game at Arsenal for the players to get this hurt out of their systems whilst on International duty.

9 game to go, lost the battle but the war's not lost yet looking at the respective run-ins. It's going to need a fantastic run to get there now though.

4 shots a piece? I thought you were mad into your stats.

    Probably.

You were schooled in the first half. Your goal was a lucky deflection and you were fortunate not to finish with 8 men.

    A team of absolute vermin.

I can't reply to you. As you say noted I'm a mature fan and I have concluded you are about 13/14 so therefore I could get in trouble with the Mods here for grooming if we continue our repartee.

United's were Mata's 2 goals, Carrick's from 30m and the penalty. So really the only decent shots any team had were the goals.

Eh? By 'decent shots', do you mean decent chances?

How is the penalty not a decent shot/chance?

United created way ore than Liverpool today, you seem to be clutching at straws here a bit.

    Did I say decent shot = decent chance ? No, I didn't.

If you created more then name these so-called 'chances' .. because I saw a shite match as far as chance creation / shooting was concerned.

No, you didn't. But what you said made no sense, so I tried to make sense of it for you.

First you said we had 4 shots a piece, and then had to clarify that you were excluding blocked shots for no apparent reason. Then you said that all 'decent shots' were goals, so excluding our penalty as a 'decent shot' for no apparent reason. It seems clear to me that you're re-writing a version of the match to make it more palatable to yourself, but whatever floats your boat. You said the other day that you're watching football for 50 years, I'd imagine you've had to re-write a version of a fair few Liverpool games in that time.

Your 50 years of watching football surely gives you the understanding to see where United had more chances today, even if those chances can't be summed up nicely in statistics that you seem to prefer. But I'll let you get on with it.

So in other words you are copping out as you can't name these other so called chances ? Enough said.

Liverpool have 5 away games and 3 home games. 2 of the away games are against Arsenal and Chelsea. Who has the toughest run in again?
    Sorted by current league position:

    1 Chelsea: United A | Liverpool A
    2 City: United H
    3 Arsenal: United H | Liverpool A
    10 Stoke: Liverpool A
    11 Palace: United A | Liverpool H
    12 Newcastle: Liverpool H
    13 West Brom: United H | Liverpool A
    14 Everton: United A
    15 Hull: United A | Liverpool A
    16 Villa: United H
    19 QPR: Liverpool H

Looks pretty even to me, the only major difference is that we play against City.

Good post, can't argue with much of that. I do think we could beat anyone on the form of the first half.
