Discussion Your Lineup Prediction

  • I've come to almost enjoy the respite of an international break over recent years - often a much needed break from the PL and our mostly frustrating performances.

However this break comes at a bad time - with the momentum of recent results, and the imminent arrival of Amorim, I'm really looking forward to this game. Obviously it'll be very early days for Amorim and not expecting anywhere near the level that I'm hoping he'll get us performing at over time. But still eager to see the Ruben reign begin.

If anything it comes at the perfect time. Ruud stopped the rut, got some decent results in to get us closer to being competitive in the table. Now Amorim can come in and handle the transition normally without it being rushed, players can come back refreshed and excited, and they'll have time on the training ground to get his early ideas across.

Finally an away fixture where I feel confident of winning. Even if it's a new manager, new to the league, our previous one had 2 and more years to figure out English football on he road and simply couldn't.

So everyone has a 'tight' hamstring and is staying in Manchester for 2 weeks, right?! Get to know the manager and his system?

The last time they won an EPL match before today, Garnacho wasn't alive yet.

It'll be very interesting to see how Ruben lines us up. Will he immediately switch to a back three? If Shaw is available, does he slot right into wing back?

Where do Amad and Garnacho fit into a system with no forward wingers?
I really don't think it's a given that he'll start with the same system he used at Sporting. Garnacho is probably our best goal threat and like you said he doesn't really fit into that 3-4-2-1.

Yeah, there's certainly that side of it. I was going to mention that, from a club point of view, it gives Amorim a handy couple of weeks to focus on his new squad and assess things.

But my post was more about how, nowadays, I'm usually ready for a couple of weeks break from the PL by the time the international breaks come along because we're usually in a bad place - whereas this time I've got renewed momentum and I'm eager to see Amorim's first game in charge.

But, yeah, quite a handy little gap in the season for Amorim to come in and assess things before the games begin again.

Sky will be doing their usual hyped up trailers for this one!

Interesting to see who his ‘attacking’ wing back will be. Mazaroui has to be a shoe in. I’d keep Ugarte and Case together in the middle as they seem to be building a bit of a partnership.

    Onana

    Lindelof
    De Ligt
    Martinez

    Rashford (RWB)
    Casemiro
    Ugarte
    Mazaroui (LWB)

    Amad
    Bruno

    Hojlund

If Yoro is back in full training I can see him starting in Ruben's first game.

Feel that we might have a few others on bench for this if training goes well over next couple of weeks
Yeah, Maguire, Shaw, Malacia, Yoro and Mainoo are all due back on or around 24th. Could be the strongest team and bench for a long while.

It will be a very long wait and most of the players will be on international so Amorim won’t have any time to coach the team.
    Anyway, I am buzzing.

Would be lovely, but I think he needs some phasing.
I just thought he won't be involved in the internationals so Ruben will get a good look at him in training and he is impressive.

Not sure if switching to 3 at the back immediately is as radical a change as many are suggesting here. It's how we play a lot of the time in possession anyway. From the players average positions yesterday the odd one out is probably Rashford while the position we didn't have was right wing back, with Dalot tucking in and being more conservative than Mazraoui on the other side who's average position was on the half way line.

Can't wait for this. Ruud did really well in his brief stint and hopefully the players have a bit of confidence.

If he goes 3 at the back I hope he goes for this:

    ------------------------------------Onana-----------------------------
    ---------------Dalot------------De Light-----------Martinez-----------
    -------------------------Ugarte-------------Casemiro
    Mazz----------------------------Bruno-----------------------Garnacho
    ----------------------Amad----------------------Hojlund-------------------

I'm sure there will be a few surprises as there a lot of slightly new roles for players so really interested to see who he puts where. I think the only players in the squad with the workrate, stamina, pace and ability to play wingback are Mazz, Garnacho, Dalot and possibly Amad.

McKenna will be very much so up for this. It won't be easy.

2 weeks of training under the new manager, Yoro and Shaw could play too. Would be nice to see.

Surely those two won’t be back for this game? It’s going to be tough enough already.

Have either played any minutes this season?

We just beat Leicestert City, we should quick work of Ipswich Town, i mean it's just a town.

Big doubt with Shaw, but Yoro has been in training for a week now. 3 weeks training may warrant some minutes. We probably won't but it would be cool.

If we dont score 5, can we sack Amorim and get Ruud back ?

Ruud is not welcome back at Portman Rd. He dived to win a penalty in your 1-0 win at PR in 2002. The loss that effectively relegated us. I’m in no way still bitter towards the donkey-faced munter.

I think Anorim will surprise people who are expecting him to immediately implement his 3-4-2-1 from Sporting. Wouldn't be shocked if he looks at the players available and starts with a back four.
I was thinking the same thing... he won't have long to prepare them by the time everyone's back from the latest waste of time friendlies (yes, that's what most of them are. Nations League is a clown show designed by clowns)

It may sound odd but I don't want Rashford dropped, unless we do play 3-4-3 and the double 10s are Bruno, Amad. Garnacho is much better as a sub and despite neither being good enough as starters, Rashford is marginally better and an awful sub.
I don’t see how in any world you can say Rashford has been better than Garnacho for at least 18 months now.

People are underestimating Dalot because he’s been up and down this season. I think Amorim will love him and have him as a key player almost immediately. Hes the only fullback we have with the right energy levels to play wingback to a high level. I think Mazroui could end up being a surprise CB long term in this system.

I agree but I think he's in need of a bit of a break. Has played a ridiculous amount of football in the last year or so, including being away at a summer international tournament and playing in every united game in this calender year so far. Pretty sure he's played more minutes than Bruno

    Onana
    De Ligt Evans Martinez
    Dalot Ugarte Casemiro Mazraoui
    Amad Bruno
    Hojlund

    ----------------------Onana

    ----- Lindelöf - De Ligt - Martínez

    Mazraoui - Ugarte - Casemiro - Dalot

    --------- Fernandes -- Rashford

    -------------------- Hojlund

    Is this gonna be it?

I'd say Rashford is the only one I'm not sure about in that left-sided #10, and I considered Yoro and Mainoo maybe too early to return to the XI instantly. One of the wingbacks might be a winger as well, though.

    -----------------------------Onana
    ----Lindelof------------deLigt-------Martinez
    Mazraoui---Casemiro--Ugarte--Garnacho
    -------------------Amad----------Bruno
    ----------------------------Hojlund

This is an Amorim-team I've put together in my head. Could see them start his first game. With Dalot as competition for rwb/lwb and rcb, Yoro in for Lindelof, once he is fit. I think we'd need Mainoo in for Casemiro to progress the ball and Rashford hopefully doing his best to get into the team as inside forward.

I hope Martinez can adopt to playing lcb. I really like him as a player, put he might lack pace to do it on the highest level, espacially if he has a progressive wingback in front of him. And I feel Garnacho could really make this position as inside wingback his own. Maybe Martinez will rather be the CB in the long run. I'm really curious how that all turns out.

Strongly disagree. his attacking output and decision making is quite terrible, so is his erratic passing and crossing, shooting etc.. Last season he became very defensive sound, and mr. dependable and even that he's lacking this year. If anything he will be moved to RCB. Id be surprised if hes chosen as a RWB. His top speed is also good but he's hardly dynamic over the first 3 meters to play there.

    I'll go with:

    Onana
    Lindelof DeLigt Martinez
    Mazaraoui Casemiro Ugarte Garnacho
    Amad Bruno
    Rashford
That's my best XI if he decided to go with his preferred 3421.

Really interested to see how certain players fit into Amorim's system if he does indeed implement some variation of a back three in his first game.

Onana obviously plays as the first choice GK.

    Central Defender

I think the optimal candidate to play as the central option is De Ligt, with Maguire as second choice for now and anyone else would be after that (bar Maybe Yoro). Evans might play there very occasionally unless we have another injury crisis, but I think his expected position might be a squad option at LCB more than CB. I'm not quite sure on the pace of De Ligt and Maguire fitting into Amorim's 343, but I think they'd be less exposed here than trying to be shoehorned in elsewhere.

    Right Central Defender

I think Lindelof will start here but once Yoro is fully fit I can see him nailing down this position as well as a younger player with pace and some support around him. I also would not be surprised to see Mazraoui here as time goes on, if we have Shaw/Malacia fit for longer periods or if someone else plays the Wing Back position.

    Left Central Defender

Martinez is the obvious candidate here, then probably Shaw or Evans as the back-ups. Seems more clear-cut than the others.

    Right Wing Back

Dalot is probably going to get this one, but may be asked to play on the left sometimes until the squad is more settled with the system and injuries.

    Left Wing Back

I actually have a sneaking feeling that Amorim may try to re-purpose Antony in this position. I think Antony is out the door at the earliest opportunity for what it's worth, but this is his only chance to play IMO. He is already third choice Right Winger as it stands and if we are potentially playing one less attacking player, then Bruno, Mount, and maybe even Eriksen become further competition in the position he would play as part of a front three - so, he could actually be 7th or 8th choice unless he's willing to have a go at the LWB role. I think he might actually be OK there, he does run to be fair to him. If he doesn't have to think too much, just overlap and first-time cross, get back in position etc. It could work. If not, look at loaning him out in January and selling in the Summer. Shaw/Malacia will obviously play here and maybe he will try and trust Rashford/Garnacho? But it just seems unlikely that will work to me.

    Central Midfielders

Ugarte and Mainoo is probably expected to be the main settled pair, with Casemiro and Eriksen as the back-ups. However, I think we'd be aiming to let these two go in the Summer so need a bit more. If we're in form and expected to dominate some games at home, maybe he plays Bruno here to get another attacking player involved, but I'm not sure this would ever be a permanent thing.

    No.10's / Wide Forwards

This is where it gets a bit difficult, as Bruno and Mount work when we are playing more a bit more narrow and want to pack out the midfield. I think Amad is more suited to this than Rashford and Garnacho. But it'll be interesting to see if Amorim favours more of two wide forwards and a central striker, or a no.10 and two strikers/wider forwards. This will be flexible IMO.

    Striker

The hope is on Hojlund, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rashford ends up playing as much if not more as a lone striker. Zirkzee is more likely to be a back-up for me. I'm really just not sold on him fulfilling a particular role well enough. I'm probably writing him off too soon, but he feels like a squad player to me. His best bits of play have been taking the ball deeper and finding some nice wide passes but he lacks the pace to then get in the box. He's such a strange player, his physical attributes don't suit his playstyle. But yeah, for me he is a third choice striker under Amorim with the capability to maybe be a back-up no.10 as well (but even there he's behind a fair few players).

    Onana
    Lindelof De Ligt Martinez
    Dalot Casemiro Ugarte Mazraoui
    Bruno
    Garnacho Rashford

Tough to know what he'll do first game, he might not even go with the 343 like everyone expects. Amad is playing well at the moment, but you'd think he won't leave out Bruno. Hojlund also must be a huge consideration if he's going with one striker, so it's very hard to find the right decision out of Amad, Garnacho, Rashford, and Hojlund to play with Bruno as the three attackers. It's only really 'easy' to leave out Mount, Zirkzee and Antony. But that's Amorim's first problem to solve, one of many he'll have to do in this job. Good luck to him!

Should be winning this game, but of course they've just managed their first win back in the PL so will be at the most confident they've been when they play us, along with well rested!

Amad as an attacking wingback is interesting. He's need to bulk up. Dalot has been poor recently but he's ridiculously fit and strong.

typical that Ipswich have suddenly found some form... but really should win whatever formation the boss goes with. Just can't help feeling it would have helped to keep Ruud on at least for some continuity

Genuine excitement for this game. New manager new formation. Ruud left a great platform to build on results-wise. Players coming back from injury. Let’s kick on from here
