    Romero
    Valencia--Smalling--Rojo--Blind
    Herrera--Carrick--Pogba
    Mata--Ibrahimovic--Rashford

subs: De Gea, Shaw, Jones, Fellaini, Lingard, Rooney, Martial

I'd prefer Martial starting but I expect it to be Rashford.

I would go 4-3-3 and hope to nick a goal.

It doesn't matter what formation you use - we create many chance regardless of formation or personnel. The problem is the inability to score goals.

I'm expecting Zlatan to spend 90mins being hassled, harassed and wound up by two CB's with nobody else stepping up and offering a goal threat. One of those games where we're limited to a couple of 25yrd speculative shots from Pogba.

I am expecting this, though you have to wonder, what the hell are our other attackers doing?
Pogba is a midfielder, so I don't expect him to score but players like Martial, Lingard, Mata, Rashford - all need to step up when Ibra is having an off day.
Right now, if our opponents stop Ibra, they stop MUFC.

The top4 is over now. Focus on this cup now.

Rostov are tough to play away, and we're usually crap away from home, so a draw would be great for us.

But We also have Chelsea next Monday, so I really hope that we would rest 3/4 players for the Chelsea game.

I keep the same defense as I hope Jones doesn't play at Chelsea. I would play Shaw but I doubt he will.

Pogba was so bad that I punish him and play a midfield three with Mata and Martial (they shouldn't play at Chelsea)

Ibra will be suspended in England so I play him in Europe.

    What I would like :

    -----------------------------------De Gea-----------------------------------
    Darmian------------------Jones-------------Rojo---------------------Blind
    -----------------------------------Herrera----------------------------------
    Mata----------------------Fellaini-----------Bastian-----------------Martial
    -------------------------------------Ibra-------------------------------------

    What it will be :
    -----------------------------------De Gea-----------------------------------
    Valencia------------------Bailly-------------Smalling-----------------Blind
    Mata----------------------Herrera-----------Pogba-----------------Lingard
    -----------------------------------Rooney------------------------------------
    -------------------------------------Ibra--------------------------------------

Play the best team and get a result. Don't care one bit about Chelsea game and 3 days rest is more than enough.

I'd agree with a few of the others above - Top 4 is remote, especially considering we have to go away to everyone above us, Liverpool aside.

We need to go all out for the Europa now - this will be a tough one no doubt, we just need to keep ourselves in touch going to the return at OT.

We can win the Europa league with 3-4 wins and some draws. The league will require a much better set of results as well as going away to Arsenal/Spurs/City and getting something. This has to be the priority now.

Away goal will be crucial I think. Hoping for a win or score draw to take back to OT. Really hope we go all the way in this competition.

The Chelsea game is not as important as this one to me. It should be the strongest team possible. They are no mugs at home.

Huge game, given how persistent we are to keep dropping points in the Prem.

We've proven yet again against fecking Bournemouth that we're not good enough to finish top 4, so winning this is our best shot at getting CL.

I've not been completely demoralised by the Bournemouth result, we'll smash them home and away IMO. We'll win the EL and finish in the top four, easy as you like.

They are 12 point behind the leader and won their last game 6-0 away from home.
There home form is pretty good, unbeaten so far this season.

I watched that game. They were pretty good going forward albeit against bottom team Tomsk. Weren't really tested defensively. Took them a while to get going but Tomsk pretty much gave up second half. We ain't going to smash 'em that's for sure. They've got some decent players up front. If Smalling plays he better be on top of his game.

I dont think we will be smashing them , narrow win1-0 2-1 win will be very acceptable even a scoring draw would not be a disaster.

No chance of smashing them but a nice 0:1 win will do. 0:2 even better.

Rostov defeated Bayern Munich in the CL this season

We couldn't even beat a 10 man Bournemouth

    2-0 to Rostov

Agreed but could also see those scores reversed if we ain't at it. They were pretty clinical in their last game. I think an away goal will be key in this game.

At least the weather will be good, (10°C) considering it's Russia. I know is a warmer part of Russia but still...

Anyone know if the pitch is artificial?

The most important game of our season so far. Hopefully we're still well in the tie for the return leg.

If we dont play that well , I would not be happy with a defeat but if it was a narrow one with 1 or 2 away goals, that would not be a a complete disaster, but I think we can get a win.

Must score. Irrespective of the result we absolutely must score. Not doing so would be an absolute disaster.

    De Gea
    Darmian - Jones - Blind - Shaw
    Carrick
    Herrera - Schweinsteiger
    Mata - Zlatan - Rooney

0-0 would be an absolute disaster? What would a 2 goal defeat be then? Armageddon?

0-0 would be better than losing but to not score invites such a ridiculous amount of pressure into the second leg.

Losing 6-4 would be bad. Losing 2-0 would indeed be Armageddon.

Jesus. No. We'll go with a strong team and try kill it in the first leg. We've plenty of time to recover for the Chelsea game after that.

Been looking into tickets for the home leg.

But I'm gonng leave it - don't really fancy a roundhouse kick to the ear from a KGB officer...

    Is it worth risking Mkhitaryan?
Mourinho suggested he might hold preserve Mkhitaryan for Chelsea next week and it’s understandable. Rostov’s pitch is meant to be terrible and it is bad enough United are having to play on it, never mind risking one of their most pivotal players.

Don't envy Jose having to pick the line-up here, need to preserve as much energy as we can for Chelsea but really can't afford to risk dropping out of this. That said Ibra will likely be banned for Chelsea anyway, so may as well let him win us this single-handedly.

    United squad vs Rostov
Goalkeepers: David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Kieran O'Hara

Defenders: Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind

Midfielders: Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young

Forwards: Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford

Possible explanations behind United squad absences
    • Schweinsteiger was had a ‘small problem’ and might still be injured.
    • Shaw was limping at one stage against Bournemouth and Mourinho might’ve chosen not to risk him.
    • Rooney came off in the second-half against Bournemouth.
    • Fosu-Mensah rarely makes matchday squads.
    • Bailly is suspended.
