He slowed him up to allow our defenders/midfield to get back. If he commits and gets it wrong he's either sent off or allows the Villa player free run at goal. It's the midfields job to track runners and prevent an easy pass. It's timid defending but it's the midfields responsibility to track their runners. They didn't.
