The issue is the two midfielders, especially McT, who lose the ball in front of our box. These are players meant to be able to keep the ball and beat the press, at least somewhat competently. They're anything but that.

Any competent defender at the very least attempts the block when the striker shoots. Lindelof just watched.

We're our own worst enemy here. Villa really haven't done much apart from a wonderstrike. But their midfield shows how lacking ours is. Just the ability to one touch pass around other players is non-existent.

The encouraging thing is we've played decently in attack. Villa aren't completely sitting back so there is space to operate. Our final passes/touches just hasn't been good. Shaw in particular has disappointed me in some situations. Fernandes seems to be having one of his 'trying too hard' games. We need to get our heads together and hopefully we can stage another second half comeback.

Very unlucky that their guy produced the best shot of his life.
But i wouldn't agree he "made the tackle". He's passed it about 2 yards away straight to the guy.
Boot it clear and there's zero risk.

This is why a controlling midfielder and central defender take priority over the attack for me. The attack is so compromised when we go behind continually and allow the other team to sit back and break.

McTominay can’t be first choice next year. He’s a good option in the squad, but the quality is nowhere near starting 11.

We are predictable at least. This has happened all season and it's why I don't get McFred in these games - if they aren't stopping these teams scoring with their rare attacks/breaks what's the point of them? It's a handicap offensively and clearly isn't very helpful defensively.

We'll come back, you can see the difference in quality but this is so common now it's a trend.

Statistically speaking, the most potent creative force that has lead to the most goals against us has been Fred giving a hospital pass just outside our penalty area.

Any opposition manager must surely be able to spot this. We desperately need a competent defensive midfielder.

I am not absolving him of fault completely but he's been an aggressive defender. The problem is we actually have two of them because Maguire is also quite softy-softy.

We basically need a Bailly/Vidic type in there. Lindelof is more a cultured defender who in the PL gets punished for being too clever.

The ball doesn't stick with any of our forward players other than Pogba. Bruno Fernandes is so infuriating but he often comes good.
