didn't Zlatan score a goal from open play?

He sure did. Alternative facts. Probably referred to that goal with the ”favorable circumstances”. Also, I google translated the quotes, so there could be something lost in translation.

I would play Carrick Bastian and Fellaini in a three man MF.

    Keep things tight.

With this midfield it would be really possible to lose 0-3 :D We saw the first half with Fellaini against Saint Etienne already... Don't think anyone wants to witness that again :D

He will experiment in this match even though it is an away fixture.

    Romero
    TFM- Smalling- Rojo- Shaw
    Fellaini Bastian
    Lingard MkhiT Martial
    Rashford

(Martial may lose his place to Rooney or Mata)

Would be happy with that with the exception of DDG starting. Could use a game before the final on Sunday. Last match 10 days ago vs Watford.

True but he'll be engaged for all if not just not the FA Cup games and therefore a long rest is pretty good. I'm sure he's training everyday and keeping himself in the best form, he works very hard on his craft.

Considering he's training every day, the rest of not playing 90 minutes (for keepers the the physical work load compared to, say, a training session is relatively easy) is not that big.

Yeah but he's made some amazing saves in the United jersey and will be called upon for a long long time to go. No harm in resting him whenever possible. Don't you think? :)

ASSE lost 2-1 to Montpellier on Sunday, and looks to have played the best team.

Yeah, just three changes from the guys who played us. Nice early goal from a set-piece, hope we aren't caught surprised by one of those. But very demoralising result.

Luke Shaw has been left out of the #MUFC squad that has travelled to St Etienne. Hard to see when he'll get a chance...

Wayne Rooney has not travelled with #MUFC to St Etienne

Are they flying directly to Saint-Etienne or Lyon ?

If they're heading to Lyon, I'll go to the airport right now

    Travelling squad:

United: De Gea, O'Hara, Romero; Bailly, Blind, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo, Smalling, Valencia, Young; Carrick, Fellaini, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Lingard, Schweinsteiger; Ibrahimovic, Martial, Rashford.

‘Crazy’, for Mourinho, means other peoples normal: ‘I've had crazy experiences in football. I was losing against Tottenham once, 3-0 at half-time, and we drew 3-3.’

    No way Romero's playing again.

Well the stupidest thing would be for him to travel to France and then not play.

Expected omission from Darmian, after his performance against Blackburn, but Shaw is done for.

That is a strong squad. Jose doesn't do messing about does he?
Yes it is. Good that he doesn't leave anything to chance. But I would still expect him to use a few of the "starters" as potential subs - Ibra, Mkhitaryan and Valencia. He'll probably use Pogba because Herrera's not able to play. I would assume that he'll only use Ibra and Mkhi if St. Etienne scores the first goal.

So , no Shaw and no Rooney and no Darmian.
Have a feeling Jose is waiting for Chinese february transfer window to close, to see what Rooney will do. He did same thing with Memphis, Morgan and Young. Did not play them until they left or decided to stay. Or maybe I'm wrong, and Wayne is "ill".

Rooney is only just back in training, so unlikely he would go, but still think time is running out for him. He has become a sub and that's it. I really don't know what to think about Shaw. Darmian was a bit woeful at the weekend, so he will not want to risk him being the weak link in the side that they could exploit.

He'll probably be on the bench at least, so he might be used as a sub (he could easily start as well). If Romero starts, Henderson/O'Hara might as well be the one who cheers the guys on the bench.
Sorry, I don't understand, is De Gea flying to not even be in the bench?

Haha, sorry. Replied to @unitedforeveral who had Romero in his lineup, that I’d wish to see DDG play this one, as he’s been rested the last two matches. He/she replied that David should be rested to which I replied that I doubt in that case he’d be flying to France if he indeed didn’t play. Who knows, happy with both, Romero has been good this season, just wish DDG got one 90 mins before the final, as otherwise he’d not have match practice in two weeks on Sunday. This probably didn’t really make any of this any less confusing? ;)

I don't know if we understand completely how much the squad members with Mourinho have to earn his trust even to be substitutes and allowing the first choice players to rest, like in the case Valencia/Young. I would say some players, specially in defense where it's more dangerous, haven't yet proved him this, like Fosu-Mensah, Shaw or Schweinsteiger.

It did. Romero had two games in a row, so…

Although it might prove to be a slow paced game (Fellaini, we're counting on you!), I'm a bit worried about possibly starting the guys who'll play the final on Sunday. I mean, there's four days rest, but there could also be extra-time in the final and we'd be in trouble then, with the likes of Blind, Mata or Ibrahimović.

That's because those people were staying in Lyon. I stayed in the city and it wasn't a hassle to get home.

Why would it be, when you could just walk back to where you were staying. Those people stayed in Lyon for a reason, as St etienne is a small town and couldn't cope with the capacity

Andrezieux I expect, no reason to go to Lyon really.
There's a private charter from Manchester coming in very soon.
