One thing we did since a long time (even under Fergie) was to neutralize Arsenal’s strengths and build a team who can hurt them. With Wenger being a dogmatic in the way he wants to play, it’s been a long time since we know how to hurt them. Close the space on midfield and on the wing, being fast in counter attack, and make their winger defend the deepest possible, exposing their defenders with playing between the lines.

I’m unsure that we’ll do the same thing on Saturday because we’re unsure about our strengths, but too sure about our weaknesses, so I think that LVG will once line up a team who is balanced but who not exploit at the maximum our strengths and exposes Arsenal’s weaknesses.

To me how we should play (without the injured players). Lot of energy in the midfield were Herrera and Di Maria can control Ramsey/Wilshere/Cazorla. Rooney closing on Gibbs and Sanchez, Januzaj on one vs one with Chambers and RVP against his former club (I would prefer having Rooney there).

We can argue why Fellaini shouldn’t play. It’s 50/50. In fact his physical presence can be an asset to us, but he’s too one dimensional, too slow to press Arsenal (except if he’s on man marking on Wilshere like he did to Fabregas). But in fact I would prefer having Di Maria and Herrera running everywhere in the midfield and going forward faster

Looking at these line-ups Valencia versus Sanchez and Chamberlain feels scary.

    @Ole Gunner Scholes Ha!

And why is that? I got lots of replies for trying to be cute here and all replies were by full members acting weird about it. Your newbie comment is more newbie than a, ummm, newbie?

Ok, I had my little fun already, let's stick to the topic.
    Arsenal 1 (Welbeck) - ManUtd 2 (Mata 2)
Because your original comment was absolutely ridiculous. Never should you want another team to score against you, whether the scorer is Danny bloody Welbeck, Ronaldo or the Queen herself. Even if you have United as getting the win, wanting Arse or anyone else to score against us is absolutely stupid.

EDIT: And I'm sorry if I'm coming across as a miserable git, it's just that wanting a goal scored against us because the would-be scorer is a former player just doesn't sit right in my book.

I too think it would be funny if Welbeck scored. Would like to see us line up like this:

    Szcz
    Bellerin Chambers Mert Gibbs
    Art Ramsey
    Walcott Sanchez Ox
    Welbz

Walcott and Bellerin probably won't start, though. Really hope we can win this, victory in the first match against van Gaal might help remove the inferiority complex our players seem to have against you.

    That pace :nervous:

From a Utd perspective, i'm liking the look of that back four.

(Not that ours will be much to write home about either)

    Scores an O.G!!

I'll get my coat and return to Newbie Section...thanks

Yes sir, but my score prediction was 1-2, which I didn't mention in my first post. Hence the wish for the ARS scorer to be Welbeck.

    DDG
    RAFAEL SMALLING MCNAIR SHAW
    CARRICK FELLAINI
    MATA ROONEY DIMARIA
    RVP

Vs Shaw, Rafa, Smalling, not worried.
Not worried about the pace or in general? I hope it's the latter, because we should both be worried with those defences. I wouldn't think Smalling was a reassuring factor in defence either.

    That's a good team.

With Super Dave and Blind out and with Valencia looking like our likely right back my confidence for this one has fallen massively. Not saying we can't win at all, I wouldn't be surprised if we did, but I'd be less surprised with a draw or loss. Again we just look too frail in defence and Arsenal have the talent to hurt us with that.

Why do all football fans have to think/want/be the same?
I agree, I'd rather him not score, I'd rather them not score at all, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't smile for him if Danny did get one.

Welbeck can do do one- if he'd gone to Bolton fair enough but he now plays for a rival in the battle for fourth and high hope he has a stinker.

I like Welbeck as much as the next man, i was gutted when he was sold. But to hope he scores against us is very strange indeed.

Doubt he will play, but there you go..

It will be funny if Welbeck, who leaved United because he was not playing as a striker, start for Arsenal against us in other position because Giroud came back.

It will be even more funny if he will be benched.

I'd much rather face Giroud than Welbeck. Even if Danny has a bad game in terms of goalscoring, he still always contributes in terms of work-rate, keeping possession in attacking positions, winning the ball back high up the pitch, directness and flair.

Giroud presents a simpler problem: stop him from threatening the goal, and you've stopped him from influencing the game.

A very under-rated quality in a striker. Can create several really threatening positions in every game. Really fecks the opposition over if we win the ball near their box. Something that's been sorely lacking in our team since Danny left.

I don't think I've seen anyone who can do it as well as Danny. Every time you see him chasing someone down, you'd bet on him to end up with the ball, despite the odds normally being in favour of the man in possession.

Worth noting that in his couple of appearances, Falcao was doing it pretty well for us. RVP doesn't really bother, which is infuriating.

Yup. A big feature of England's game against Scotland the other day. Makes me a tad worried about how much we pass it round the back these days. Could be meat and drink to him and Sanchez. Either that or we completely Traveller them out after an hour. Hopefully the latter!

Blind would have been really handy to prevent it. He's excellent when being pressed, and excellent at providing an out-ball for a CB who's being pressed. Carrick, to be fair to him, isn't usually the sort to actually lose the ball, but he doesn't provide that movement which relieves the pressure on everyone else at the back too the way Blind has been.

It also depends on which CBs we end up with. As solid a defender as he usually is, Smalling is comfortably the worst in terms of doing the right thing with the ball when under pressure.

Giroud is no slouch in terms of build up. Actually he's very good at keeping play alive.

    I'd like to see;

de Gea; Rafael*, Smalling, Jones*, Shaw; Carrick*, Herrera, Fellaini; di Maria, Rooney, Mata

A few question marks on the fitness of a few players but I'd certainly like to see us go 433, rather than the 442 diamond on Saturday.

I'd much rather face Giroud because Welbeck will have a rocket up his arse to prove Van Gaal wrong. It is one of the worst things about having so many of our ex player's in the Premier League, you always get the feeling they put in an extra 10-20%.

He's a good hold-up player, yes, but he's more one-dimensional than Danny. If he's not threatening the goal, he tends to not play very well. Whereas as we know, even if you keep Danny well away from the goal, he'll do everything else as well as ever.

daley blind isn't going to be out for 6 months btw. I just watched the press conference.

Really really annoyed that luke shaw is possibly out, they should of took him of the minute he was feeling his hamstring at half time.

    Di Maria
    Carrick
    De gea

They're all fit so that's good.

If luke doesn't make it, Blackett will have to play.
