Throwing a crap load of cash at Lyon is exactly what we should do imo.
So easy to spend other people's money.

Not for Benzema, Eto'o, Torres, Tevez or all the tea in China would I want to see Rooney banished to the left wing next season. It would be a big mistake.I've changed my stance slightly regarding him... he is probably one of the handful of players that could bring that X factor that Ronaldo had. The only question is the price, but bar Hargreaves (who, without injury problems, is still a quality player), Fergie has usually gotten them right with his big signings. The only question is, do we leave Berbatov on the bench or put Rooney on the left?
...............Benzema...............
Rooney.....Berbatov......Valencia/Park
I was looking forward to seeing Berbatov playing in front of Rooney next season, but if Benzema comes then no doubt he would be our first choice #9.
I agree, regardless of who we sign I don't want to see Rooney sacrificed out on the left wing. He's too honest of a player for his own good at times and spends too much of this time in the defensive third.
Exclusive: Lyon President Aulas: We Want To Build Around Karim Benzema
Olympique Lyonnais president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed the club’s intention to bolster their attacking options next season; however, he has indicated that it is his desire to keep hold of star man Karim Benzema, who has been linked to numerous European heavyweights in the recent past.
When quizzed by Goal.com about Lyon’s intentions for the transfer window, Aulas revealed that forwards will be sought by the Rhone Valley club. “For the moment, we want to recruit mainly in attack,” he affirmed, before going on to state that this does not necessarily mean that Benzema will leave the club.
“Karim has long expressed his desire to remain with Olympique Lyonnais. The club wants him to stay and restructure around him. Now it’s true that the transfer market is very surprising and the news from Real [Madrid], Chelsea and Manchester United makes me very perplexed. No-one is intransferable, but knowing Karim, if he did leave, it would be to Real Madrid.
“For the moment, we are not talking about transferring Karim.”
Aulas then talked of players who could arrive at the Stade Gerland, describing Real Madrid’s Royston Drenthe and Arjen Robben as “interesting” players. In addition, he confirmed that moves are being made with regard to Porto’s Lisandro Lopez, who is reportedly close to signing for les Gones.
“We have been in contact with his agents and he is a player we like. We are in a relationship, that’s true, but nothing is finalised,” he said.
Inter’s Patrick Vieira is also on OL’s radar and was described by Aulas as “a great player”, the president affirming that contact had been made with the France captain, although the Lyon boss warned that nothing is “concrete” in that regard.
On the subject of Inter, Aulas rejected speculation regarding a possible move to Milan for midfield creator Ederson, who has been the subject of a significant amount of speculation of late.

fecking Madrid!
Everyone wants to play for them.
Hate Madrid.

more fools them. Madrid are going to have so many big egos at the club in the next few years they will probably just implode, ruining a few careers in the process.
i would rather we sign a "good" player that loves united heart and soul, than a superstar with a big ego who disrupts the dressing room and talks about madrid.

I think we have a clear run on this one (meaning Madrid agreeing leaving us to battle Chelsea, Barca etc.. on our own without interfering).
if we got him, this would be my formation:
--------------------Benzema------------------------
------------------------------Rooney---------------
----LW--------------------------------------------Valencia
------------------Berbs----------------------------------
------------------------------Carrick-------------------
Berbs would play the Iniesta Role of AM with the ball stuck to his foot.

Valencia wouldn't be first choice too.
Berbatov playing the Inista role!!!
Right.
I would rather Berbs play in midfield than shove Rooney out wide. if Benzema came he would be 1st choice, no doubt.
If we played the formation you've suggested then it wouldn't matter how amazing Benzema is as a forward because we'd never have the ball.

Iniesta's never played in a midfield two.
United drive us round the Benz
LYON say they are powerless to stop Manchester United target Karim Benzema leaving.
The French side are desperate to keep hold of their star striker.
But United will have money to burn when Cristiano Ronaldo joins Real Madrid and Alex Ferguson is ready to swoop.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed megabucks Manchester City and Chelsea could rival United for Benzema.
He said: "Karim has said that he wants to stay another year at Lyon.
"But I think that Kaka or Ronaldo maybe imagined remaining with their respective clubs.
"There is a tsunami called Real Madrid which provokes reactions at Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United.
"So it is very complicated to say that he is non-transferable. Today, it's obvious we want to keep him.
"There is more chance he'll be at Lyon next season than that he won't be.
"I won't hide from you the fact that he has been approached. For the moment, I managed to convince them not to go further."
My impression is that Aulas knows that Madrid are throwing silly money and he is desperately trying to be one of the "recepients"...
He played it regularly 2 seasons ago when they went through an injury crisis. It's also where he made his name.
Yu can find him in any of the front six positions during a season.
Most of them come loving the club and then with time, things change
Yep. Even if we signed a good player now, if he spent 3 years at the club and became a great player its still likely that if Madrid came in for him he'd be on his bike. That is, unless the player was English... But an English player makes the whole becoming great part unlikely.
