The Official "My Xbox 360 just Died" Thread

Mine just died, 3 RROD ... Its an elite and I aint even had it a year yet, piece of fcuking cheap shit

feel like a mug as I've always said 'don't worry about the failure rate, if it dies I'll buy a new one' ...

Why the fcuk should I have to?

I had the red rings last week, so I obviously went off on one like a bit of a lunatic. However, when I turned it off and on again, it was fine, and it has been since.

Nah, sorry to say but the seeds have been sown mate... happened to me a few weeks back... now it is well and truly dead. Same with my mate :(

Thats the precursor...

I have one and I'm worried it's gonna die. I've had it since Christmas day.

It sounds like in all likelihood it will die.

Why are they such pieces of shit?

For those of you that had them break how did you treat them? Did you move them around a lot?

Eventually it will die, might be years for you though...

As for how did I treat it:
Haven't played it for weeks, never gets moved, well ventilated... fcuk knows what happened  ...

Not particularly, maybe once every 4 months i'd move it.

Mine lasted from December 2006 to December 2008. Pretty casual gamer so didn't play it loads. Hadn't touched it for a week when I turned it on and was greeted by the flashing red lights. To be fair Microsoft sent a replacement console within a week, and the process was pretty straight forward.

I kept it flat on my table, none of the sides were covered by any other objects so had plenty of room, not too overheat.

Haven't got a clue if these details matter though.

What was your process Red? Phoned, sent off, received, all in a week?

Mine died just before Xmass. Took only 13 days for it to be sent off (to Germany), replaced and sent back. Fair play to Microsoft for at least setting up a decent system for that.

I registered my console online, and I saw my warranty was still valid.

They then sent an E-mail confirming this, followed by UPS shipping details.

I arranged a date for collection, printed off the UPS label and stuck it on the box my 360 was in, with a return address.

Arrived a week later.

I haven't moved mine in about 6 months. My room is not heated (as i can't stand being too hot, i can live with too cold) and the machine is on a unit in the open. It is however literally stood right next to both the PS3 and Wii in a small space, i assume this was a bad idea (i hadn't used them for a while though, so it was nothing to due with the heat they were generating.)

It was completely random, as the night before i watched a film on it, the following day i went to switch it on to play fifa and there appears the red lights.

Sending it off seems easy enough. I filled out everything online, a label has been sent to me and it's being picked up tomorrow. I now have the mission of finding a box to put it in before they arrive!

I really dont think those details matter, it seems to be random. The only thing i know is that it WILL break, at some stage.

I've read the first 2 pages and it seems that the 360s are well dodgy. We're going to be buying a console over the next 12 months and were thinking of a 360. Based on the rest of this thread so far would I be right in saying that that would be a silly move ?

If so, would you recommend a PS3 instead ?

While most 360's are time bombs there are still those who are immune to the rrod. also bear in mind that most people in this thread would have only come because there xbox has broken whereas most of the goodens have had no need to visit.

In a way, you could say you are getting what you pay for (now) with the xbox being so cheap and the Ps3 still so very expensive. Personaly, I think the PS3 is better even though I have never owned one but I plan to. The Xbox ive had back from repair has been great which could suggest new units have been fixed but who knows.

I've always loved Playstation from the very beginning. I can't wait to get one and play Resident Evil 5 on it.

I was absolutely blown away by Resident Evil 1 on the PS1. So haunting and atmospheric. I bought Resident Evil 4 on the Wii and was more than impressed.

I even found some music from resident evil 1 and downloaded it. During our Halloween party we had it playing in the background :)

I know.....kinda nerdy.

RE5 is coming to the 360 too :):D
Also.....what is a rrod?

Red Ring of Death, the cause of the 360 deaths

Mine died nearly two months ago, so I went to Microsoft's site to register it for repair. As it turned out, it still had two months left on its guarantee so I thought they would give me a new one if I send them this one.

They promised to collect it in two days time via UPS and it was just after my birthday, middle of January. I waited a week but no one came, so I rang them up just to find out that they'd send someone within 3 days. Another week passed by and still nobody came. I called again and had an identical dialogue, although this time it was 2 days instead of 3 days.

The same habit repeated once again and in less than two weeks my guarantee will expire, so they will not have to repair at all. I probably won't bother calling them anymore because they certainly do not have any intention of sorting it out.

Do everything online. Far easier. You have to arrange the collection yourself, but that's a good thing! It means they WILL come.

Both have chances of breaking, all electronics do, it's the ratios that currently at least seem to be vastly different between the two. That said, the newer XB360s seem to be a lot more reliable.

Microsoft won't give out figures for the exact failure rate, all we really know is that they set aside $1 billion to deal with the problem.

One possible indicator could be reports of machine failures on popular gaming sites. For example, on NeoGAF, the XB360 failure thread is 197 pages long and has 9817 posts. The PS3 version of the same thread is 18 pages long and has 892 posts. Worldwide user bases are now around: PS3 - 22 million, XB360 - 30 million, just to add some context.

Initially, I did everything online. It didn't work out at all.

My machine broke last night, well, 3 flashing red lights.

Where do I go to find out if I am under warranty to get this thing fixed by M$?

OK, I found my way to the xbox site and have filled in the form and got this back:

Shipping Method:
We will send you a shipping label by email to the email address you have provided. When you receive the email, follow the instructions on how to access the label, print the label and return the console to the service centre.

Notes:

• Please send the console to us as quickly as possible and make sure that it is within 20 days or we will cancel the repair order.
• Before you seal the package, make sure that you remove any discs from the disc tray and that you remove any other accessories (including the hard drive on Xbox 360) attached to the console.
• If we find any evidence of tampering or anything else that voids the warranty, we will not service the console and will return it to you un-repaired.

Does this mean I have to pay out of my own pocket to send the machine to them and that they no longer offer the service via UPS collecting your machine for free?

The label shows that it is all paid for etc.

Add another casualty to the list.

Just re-purchased FIFA 2009, played, all good, turn the maching off.

Turn it back on, E74...

Tried everything, no avail.

Gonna send it out Tuesday for the 4-6 week adventure.

I've the R.O.D problems 4 times in the space of one year and each time I managed to repair it but now my xbox360 had an heart attack and can't turn itself on :(
No guarantee since it was bought in Asia as well, I'm truly shagged here

My Xbox was sent off and I got it back within 4 days when my rrod occurred. If you can't live without a console for a week, you have to be concerned.
