Slovenia is getting some of that Balkan energy that Croatia usually has on tournaments.

It's crazy that 1% of the country's population is attending football matches in Germany (20k out of 2 million). And now everyone from former Yugoslavia will support them going forward.

That's very selective. For example Rio was made captain in 2008 and Cole, Terry and Neville were all available and all four playing in a CL final.
Right, but they weren’t always in the England side and their replacements were dross.

Neville missed basically the entirety of the 07/08 season and was very much on the run to retirement after that. Glen Johnson was the best option for years, and he was only ever alright.

Rio pulled out of the 2010 World Cup squad, promoting Upson to starter and handing Michael Dawson a spot in the squad. Ashley Cole regularly had injury issues, and until Shaw came along we were plugging the gap with Bridge, Baines and Rose, with the likes of Martin Kelly and Stephen Warnock as back-up.

The midfield continued to rely on Lampard and Gerrard well into their 30s, with Barry the preferred foil. By 2016 we were desperately hoping Rooney could do a job there. I'm not sure Carrick would have improved matters too much.

We ended up taking Andy Carroll and Rickie Lambert to international tournaments (as well as resurrecting Heskey in 2010).

The side from the qualifying campaign for Euro 2008 right through to the 2014 World Cup was relying on the decreasing number of available players from the "golden generation" to carry them, and by 2016, Rooney was basically the last man standing.

Denmark and Slovenia going through without winning a game between them. This format is so stupid.
Portugal didn't win a game in normal time until the semi-final in 2016, which was actually their only win inside 90 minutes.

Drew all three games and finished third in a group containing Hungary, Iceland and Austria, qualifying with a goal difference of 0, and were the only third placed team to have not won a game.

Needed extra time to get past Croatia, penalties to get past Poland, beat Wales, then needed extra time to beat France in the final.

Avoiding France, Germany, Portugal and Spain until the final then. Sir Gareth has done it again.

Should have given Ralf time of day Erik, also couldn't understand not keeping Sabitzer either

Managing Austria and Schalke is not the same as managing Manchester United, there was zero chance Ralf was getting a full season as a manager on the back of the end of his tenure, it looked grim.

I mean as bad as we were last season under Ten Hag he obviously still had the players on his side, resulting in results that would’ve been impossible to achieve otherwise, beating Liverpool in the FA Cup, then beating City in the final).

Ten Hag never lost the players, Ralf lost them after two months.

Unless you were referring to his job as “consultant” or a director of some sort, I don’t think that was on the cards once Austria came calling?

Slovenia is what people thought Hungary would be on this Euro.

With all the talk about the format, in the end the better teams are through.
A: Germany and Switzerland
B: Spain and Italy
C: England and Denmark
D: France and the Netherlands
F: Portugal

There will always be some teams that are not that good but end up in the second half of the tournament. That’s not new.

My issue is not with the format or the number of teams overall, but with the low quality shown so far by some of the teams in the above list, particularly France, Italy and Denmark. Croatia is also disappointing; no where near its 2018 level. England is not looking good either, but I don’t tend to have high expectations of them anyway, and so I’m not that surprised.

I look forward to the next round after tomorrow’s games. Let’s see if these teams can finally start showing a much more convincing form.

You have to be crazy to think we are capable of producing that kind of run in the knockouts

There's nothing weird about it we have hardly created a clear opportunity against Slovenia. Nothing about that suggested right direction, if that's right what's the wrong direction in terms of our passing and creation. We have qualified which is good but we have produced absolutely nothing to inspire confidence that we have the game to compete at the business end.
We had much better shape and pressing than before, we had a few moves where the positioning had to be a little better at the end, next match very winnable, we have great attacking subs, they had no chances, all to play for.

I’m not saying England are playing well enough to win the tournament but if that’s the only marker of whether football’s any fun, well, I can’t subscribe to that.

England play shite football and Southgate is a rubbish manager.

Anyone who wanted him at Utd is a moron.

Imagine topping your group and still playing France because they came 2nd. That sets a decent game up for the next round.

Dennmark finished second.

This was just a bad group.
No, the format is bad too. Third place teams have no business going into the knockouts. Just makes group games boring because teams play not to lose.

Either go back to 16 teams or just do 32 teams

That is not how the Balkans work. ;)

shitty tournament so far. I don't expect knockout stage to be much better since they allow 3rd place teams to advance

What a brutal group group C was, thank God it's over. I don't know about Denmark's coach but Southgate's and Stojkovic's sides are terrible to watch. Slovenia only ones doing well (were expected to finish 4th with 0/1 point) and congrats to them if they progress (not confirmed yet I guess?).

Also well done to Ralf Rangnick, Austria may be team of the tournament so far.

He's getting some criticism as well. Denmark has an issue with player quality for sure, but yesterday it just seems like we didn't really go for it. Way too hesitant to take the risks on the counter-attacks and so on. It was a frustrating watch, but I do acknowledge that he doesn't have a lot of great creative tools anymore. Eriksen can't do it all, and there are no really good forwards to pass to. All the quality of the Danish team is in the midfielders and central defenders.

It's confirmed that they're through, just not confirmed how high they finish in the 3rd place table. If Czech Republic win they'll knock Hungary out and go above Slovenia in 3rd on the table.

Oh I see, thank you. I thought that group with Belgium, Romania etc could disrupt Slovenia's finish but obviously Hungary got worst goal difference.

I see. Yeah last night in 2nd half it felt like you were just holding on a draw and it could've backfired on you, England weren't much different in 1st game. There was even great position to shoot for Milinković-Savić in stoppage time but his shot was too weak to make it difficult for Schmeichel.

As Serbian, congratulations on getting to knockout stage. Back in 1992 coming to euros instead of Yugoslavia you won the thing so why not do it once more :D

Who do England come up agains next?
Depends how the final two groups play out. Either it will be the Netherlands or which ever team finishes third in Group E, which can be any of Romania, Belgium, Slovakia or Ukraine.
