He can feck off. He shouldn't be even in the conversation. He's done nothing to be linked with one of the biggest clubs in the world, especially at club level.

Would you veto your boss?
Only Ratcliffe is above Berrada and he's not suppose to be getting involved in the actual coaching side.

Berrada would be above Ashworth and Wilcox below him. I don't think one man is choosing the manager.

If he’s appointed it’d be a real condemnation of Ashworth. I know they’re close, and they did some great work rebuilding ‘Team England’ together.

But if he doesn’t understand that Club and International football are worlds apart, he’s an idiot.

We’d be back to Vibes FC as we were under Ole for about 12 months. Everything calm and steady, through good results and bad.

That’s kind of ok. I think Ole did everything the football club needed for a solid year. But he was not what a football team needed in order to win and challenge for everything. Southgate would be that, without any legacy credit in the bank.

Under no set of circumstances should his first big job in Club management be here.

This new structure everyone's been crying out for should continue where Arnold and Woodward left off, and just hire the most popular choices on redcafe. Anything else makes them incompetent

Wouldn't be my top choice or even top 5, but I would honestly welcome a game plan and some actual style of play than the dross that we've watched this season. "Fingers crossed Onana has a good game" is not a tactic

Except get the press back on England's side, get rid of the egos, change the mentality of international players, remove the crippling fear, get to finals again, comfortably breeze through qualifiers, protect players, implemented England DNA throughout the FA, carried the massive pressure of being England manager without once looking like it would make him crumble.

He needs trophies, but what he has done with England after the nonsense we saw in the 90s, 2000s and 2010s is certainly impressive.

I hope 2.9% of them votes that said yes aren’t our fans.

I think Ashworth is credited with changing the England DNA across all age groups at the FA level.

I’m sure Southgate may have accomplished some of the above but it still doesn’t take away from the fact that he has one of the most talented forward lines on the international stage and he still plays pedestrian football.

He also hasn’t accomplished anything at club level to warrant being linked to us.

Ashworth created the blueprint, but Southgate was certainly instrumental in the implementation of it. It is arguably the whole reason the press keeps linking him to us, he and Ashworth worked closely on that project.

Can't accomplish much in club football when you spend 11 years in international football - not that he has won much there either to be fair.

That's fantastic! Now tell me what he's done at club level?

Southgate would throw their statements about style of play in the garbage and would instantly turn the entire (and I think it would actually be the entire) fanbase against them. I doubt they're that foolish.

Well both your scenario and the scenario in which they hire Southgate reek of incompetence.

I highly doubt this rumour has any validity to it though.

:lol::lol:

Do you think that's enough for him to be considered for one of the biggest jobs in the world?
Funnily enough, that's the same year when Guardiola won his first CL. If Southgate hadn't been sidetracked with helping set the foundations for his country, he might've been up there as well

IF this happened, all regard and sentiment for INEOS would be gone in an instant.

Most definitely. I even think the way they've currently dealt with ten Hag is quite poor. If they're going to sack him, it should have been done by now and a new manager should have been brought in.

I normally don't consider what people did 15 years ago as vitally important when I look at what they can bring to a job now. I assume, if he is considered, it will be because of his work with England, not what he did as a player-manager 15 years ago.

Well, with all due respect, I hope INEOS have a bit more about them when taking everything into consideration because as said before, he's done feck all at club level to deserve the United job.

Has he done enough at international level then? He hasn't won much, the football isn't usually that entertaining, and he is very risk adverse. Not exactly traits you would associate with this club.

If they go for Southgate it looks likely that he is being considered for the job as a transitional manager that fixes a deep seeded malaise that torments the club and helps implement the structural changes Ashworth and Wilcox want - much like what he has done with England. If that is what they want, there are few better qualified.

He's done quite well with England, but the answer would remain a no, mainly due to the reasons you have stated.

I can 100% see them going for him for all the reasons I’ve said before.

Exactly, so let us assume that Ashworth, Wilcox and Berrada are not complete idiots. Should they choose him, why would they do so?

Think of it like this: If you were to hand pick a manager who has a track record of implementing significant cultural and structural changes in a historic English culture football organisation struggling from years of mismanagement, who works well within a limited structure, is a good man manager and has proven longevity under pressure.

Who, in today's football, do you think of?

Southgate (England, the obvious candidate), Pochettino (Spurs), Potter (Brighton), McKenna (Ipswich), Frank (Brentford).

Honourable mentions to Pep and Klopp for obvious reasons.

What are those reasons?

SJR is holding out for Southgate to win the Euros so he can bring him in and make a statement of intent by saying “I’ve got us the best England manager for 60 years… he’s the one to take us back to the top… he has the man management skills, he has experience at the highest level, he can deliver under pressure… and I’ve convinced him to leave his England role to take up the challenge of bringing glory back to the biggest club in the country…”

And if he doesn't win the Euros?

Some of the posters that I can see that voted yes have made out that they are United fans in posts I've seen for a long time, but they can't be if they're voting for Southgate to be our next manager.

I honestly do think they want him, and it scares me to my core.
I mean what could they possibly see in Southgates coaching and tactics with England that makes them think "oh yeh, love that at United!"

What the feck is England DNA

Transitional manager? Do you mean Rangnick? FFS haven't we had enough? And you want someone transiting right from August?

And worse, Southgate won't be able to start until August, worse scenario than The Chosen One. 2 Negatives don't make a positive. I thought we are already late on the manager's decision, sort out the Bruno / Sancho situation ASAP and start engaging Agent before mid-June, don't repeat the Chosen One mistake again, ending up with Fellaini at the last minute...

To play devil's advocate for a second here, we can't demand that Ineos show conviction in their decisions rather than bow to fan sentiment, while at the same time demand that they listen to the fans when it comes to Southgate.

You don't even need to emphasise the club level part. If it's true that our intention is to become a side that plays possession football, capable of consistently playing said style regardless of our opponents level, then Southgate should never be a possible candidate here because he's never got a team playing like that.
