Why not? People complain we give players away for peanuts, and considering West Ham is recently minted, they should cough up.
Because they are limited players who lots of modern teams wouldn’t be interested in. They aren’t the right profile for the progressive midtable teams.

We are lucky Moyes is at West Ham and we should capitalize on a reasonable offer.

So? Chelsea also has gotten rid of players that are garbage for high fees, like Havertz. If they can do it, so can we. In fact, mid-table teams like West Ham rely on doing that very business. About time we do the same. Also, West Ham is not a progressive mid-table team, so why are you even saying that?

Exactly! That’s why it is West Ham and Moyes that are enquiring. Aston Villa are busy buying Pau Torres. The likes of Brighton and Brentford would never look at a player like Maguire.

He was a mistake for a club wanting to play modern football to buy. We now need to depend on a club with a more dated style to buy him.

Havertz hasn’t found his role, but he is fantastic technically. He can play a role in a modern possession football team. Harry Maguire can’t and, as such, suitors are limited.

We can’t chase them away with unrealistic fees.

He scored the winner in a Champions League final and is only 24 years old. He has potential to be a £60 million player. Real Madrid were interested in him.

Maguire is an overpaid 30 year old center back, who lacks agility and speed and struggled against good teams in the Europa League, nevermind the CL.

He has his uses, but we need to be realistic about the potential pool of suitors for a player with his profile.

Agreed. We should bite West Ham's hand off. Though i think maguire could be a success in italy (not for napoli obviously).

Maguire would be good for a Moyes side I think.

You stick him in a defensive low block side with protection in front of him and he can do the job. He's generally been good for England, especially in the tournaments, because of how cautious Southgate is. Moyes will be similar.

He's not good enough for Utd, not the Utd ETH wants us to be anyway.

We should sell if we can get the fee that is left of his book value, which is around £27 million.

But if we sell him we need to get a new guy in. I’m not comfortable going into a season with only 3 central defenders while one of them is Varane.

Varane will get injured, he is not suddenly going to become indestructible.

Unless someone is willing to pay a large-ish amount Harry should stay. No need for United to sell him cheap.

Just take the 20 and get him out.

really hope they don't pull out totally
With the way amortisation works I'm pretty sure selling him for that much would count as a loss in the books, especially since we'd have to sign a replacement.

This is the problem when you sign players for £80m+ and it doesn't work out.

It’d cost us minimum 30m to replace him with someone who’s atleast at his level, we may as well keep him unless an offer of that value comes in. I think he’ll surprise a few people now he has a competent keeper behind him.

Use this logic, why shouldn't West ham just go for this "someone" who is at least at his level, and probably younger with lower salary?

I'd gladly get rid of him for a bag of Skips and a mint humbug but..
  1. He's objectively worth more than 20 mill
  2. The way contracts work is that if we sold for 20 it would count negatively against us because of what we've spent on him
  3. It would cost us at least 30-40 to get an adequate replacement in, and considering our money is low and ffp it's not likely to happen unless we make multiple sales

Because they believed they could get Maguire for 20 mill instead of another CB for 30-40, thus spending less?

That is the idea, but probably not spending less overall given Maguire's high salary . Now the bid is rejected so West Ham will probably look else where.

20m for England's first choice CB? feck right off.
Yep this. I assume wages are the problem pushing the total cost up but Maguire needs to make some sacrifices too for his career. If he wants to go the Bale route, not much we can do.

He got a payrise recently due to us qualifying for CL. He's probably on well in excess of 200k a week. £20m isn't as bad of an offer as made out.

Alabama but always Wales in my heart
He has looked fine in pre season and he is our 4th choice CB. Selling him seems unlikely to generate any real gains for us and will leave us needing to add a replacement we cannot afford this window. Happy to tell West Ham to jog on and keep him as our backup to the backup CB.

I think it'll take something like 35 million for the club to accept a deal. Which Maguire also has to be open to accepting.

They're not going to take a book loss on him and then replace him on top. Not a chance in hell. We're scrambling around for sales in order to move on another midfielder, there's absolutely no chance we will compromise ourselves by taking a loss here. It would put a real dent in tight finances.

They would much prefer to keep him for another year as backup, then sell him for the remaining value next summer. Which will probably be an easier sale as he'll be cheaper and probably more resigned that he'll play feck all. ETH can probably not afford to tell Maguire he is completely surplus at the moment because..well...he actually isn't. He knows he needs Varane cover.

Joke. Book loss and would have to find a replacement. He's a good enough 4th choice / 5th choice.

20 million is absolutely taking the piss. 35 million you'd think would be the lowest we would accept.
