Given how much those Fantastic Beast films sucked, I can see why they're turning back to the original material to make their money.

Movies still hold up very well I think. Some of the actor’s will be very difficult to replace

id get it if they wanted to do a prequel or sequel series but redoing the actual books seems pointless

Not the kids though. They were fecking terrible.

An animated series would work best. They will need to cram a lot of filming otherwise.
Feel like bigger books than HP have been adapted for live television just fine?

It’s been a long time coming. The amount of information missed in the films was ridiculous & the final film was just horrific so I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the time afforded by a TV series.

Also Rowling isn’t exactly liked too much anymore. Will be interesting who wants to work with her

Reckon the ring of power writers will be free by then

This will be dreadful. Putting those books into films wasn’t an easy job and, for the most part, they did it well. There’s still a charm about them, even now.

Good luck replacing the likes of Rickman and Coltrane. It’ll be hard enough finding a reasonable replacement for Weasley.

This sounds like a truly terrible idea. If you want the details missing from the film then read the books.

Let’s be honest, Daniel Radcliffe will be the easiest to replace by a country mile. There is so many fantastic actors in that film series and just so perfectly cast and he stuck out like a sore thumb in the middle of them with a wooden performance. I always wondered what they would have been like if they had a Harry with genuine charisma capable of dynamic acting.

You read this a lot, but the reality is that the Potter character has no charisma or dynamism beyond what we’ve already seen in the films. Radcliffe did a decent job with a fairly wooden character who was designed to be the placeholder from which all the other magic derives.

An all singing and dancing Potter with some sort of edge would be ludicrous.

Harry was supposed have self confidence, bordering on the same arrogance his father James had crossed with the approachable, friendly charm of his mother. Radcliffe didn’t convey that at all, he was wooden and his actual acting was often terrible. It’s a shame because he’s developed into a much better actor now but he sticks out like a sore thumb in a film where most of the kids put in some really top class performances. Draco Malfoy in particular steals show in the latter films. Emma Watson is a poor actress but she basically is Hermione.

It would have worked better as a TV series in the first place. There is so much lore though in the world that I don't get why you wouldn't just make a show about other stuff.

TV wasn't nearly as big at the beginning of the century so doing films made financial sense.

Oh yeah, I understand why they did it at the time as a movie, don't get me wrong. I just think the movies hold up well enough that it's not needed to redo that stuff. Yeah, they miss a bunch from the books but don't think it's worth rehashing.

The original actors couldn't act for sh*t, so improving on them wouldn't be difficult...well shouldn't be.

But J.K is abit of a tw*t so I hope it fails miserably.

I fully recognise the wooden acting in the films but they’re a guilty pleasure, and I will still happily watch them over the Christmas period.

Replacing people like Alan Rickman/Robbie Coltrane will be incredibly difficult, but I hope a huge series can cover much of what was missed by the films.

I would massively appreciate it taking a more sinister turn as the story grows darker though. I’d want to see it written to cater for an adult audience as opposed to kids.

I agree, but isn't there a fundamental problem that the actors need to be no more than 12 years of age, when the filming starts if they want it to match how old they are supposed to be in the books? Getting good child actors is in itself very tricky, but there is also no way of knowing if those kids will continue to develop as actors to a satisfactory level. It was unfortunate for the film series that the main character had the worst actor out of the original kids they cast (although arguably he is also the most boring character in the series). They could, of course, switch out the actors if needed, but that always comes across as really clumsy.

I fundamentally don't understand why they don't come up with a new story instead. The latest movie only came out about 10 years ago - is it really time for a remake already? There is enough to work with in the world, and the school setting would lend itself well to a GoT like series format with 8-10 episodes of one hours over a few season. Perhaps starting in the teen years and continuing beyond school.

Agree with this. You can even start with their kids and see how the wizarding world changes post-Voldemort and exploring those avenues or even do a series based on Harry's dad, Sirius etc. That would be far more interesting.

It definitely will I reckon. It's the flagship show for a new streaming channel so it's demographic will likely be adults paying subscription fees who they'll hope to keep for retention.

This is why I'm interested as I didn't watch many of the original movies because I felt they were too childish. In the right hands they could make it much more interesting.

As long as they bring back Romilda Vane.

This will be terrible. The original movies are beloved by so many.

I think a series on Voldemort would be much better to be honest.

While I'm a big Harry Potter fan and it reminds me massively of my youth reading those books and watching the movies for the first time, I'm undecided on this one.

Plus the whole J.K Rowling this is just a bit of a mess and can't possibly have no impact on this, given she's listed as executive producer. The recent game prompted this even more and people are still either boycotting it or on the fence.

Genuinely don't know what to think about it.

Fantastic idea. Couple of series on Tom Riddle early years and becoming Voldemort would be brilliant.

No need for 10 years worth of series reinventing a much loved series, which is what they're reporting currently.

To be fair, this isn't quite like Lord of the Rings where the movies received complete critical acclaim by fans and non-fans and can't possibly be bettered. The source material could be reworked into a fresh take on the series that works, if not better, than at least differently to the original movies. A fresh take if you will.

I think with the success of Hogwarts Legacy, they could’ve had a brand new story in the Harry Potter world. The beauty of the source material is the world created. The plot generally isn’t that great.

It didn't show up in the sales figures. It sold 12 million copies in two weeks. Largely people don't really care enough about J.K. Rowling's view to influence their purchasing decisions.

True, maybe the on the fence bit was a self opinion.

Still made people talk about her stupid views once again though. While handing her a load of money...

Yeah, it unfortunately just proved to producers and decision makers in studios that these kind of things don't really matter, when it comes to business. Some would probably argue that it worked in their favor, as it brought a lot of added attention to the game (no such thing as bad press and all that).

That would have been fantastic.

Really hard to replace the movie cast.
It will be getting used to not seeing Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon in their iconic roles.

Hopefully they will stay true to the books.

100%. There are so many plots which would be very interesting to explore that it feels like a shame they're just going to re-do the books (although they might include enough book info this time as opposed to the initial movies). What I would have loved to see is Voldemort's time at Hogwarts and his rise to fame, culminating in the first wizarding war. This could have included the initial opening of the Chamber of Secrets, Hagrid at Hogwarts, Dumbledore as a teacher, the making of the Horcruxes, the founding of the Order of the Phoenix (and their struggles e.g. the many deaths, Neville's parents, ...), Snape's story, ... There is so much to work with there that you could easily spin this out over an entire series which would perfectly fit onto the moment where Hagrid rescues Harry and drops him off at the Dursleys.

Other interesting storylines:

- Story of the Hogwarts founders until the point Slytherin leaves
- Dumbledore's youth (and friendship/struggle with Grindelwald)
- The Marauders
- Sequel about Harry's and Ron's/Hermione's kids at Hogwarts

This would be perfect as you have the adult and dark element to it too.

Google tells me that's a character from the popular Harry Potter franchise.

In the movies it was the lass who plays Triss in The Witcher. An adult HP with her involved doesn't sound too bad. :nervous:

Looking forward to this. Movies despite being successful, never really clicked with me.
Hogwarts legacy has already shown that IP is still very strong and anything half decent will be successful
