Backing the manager is part of why we've been in such a big mess. Look at LvG with Di Maria, Depay, Mourinho with Lukaku, Ole with Maguire. We basically just let them tell us who they want and go all out for that player, usually paying way over the odds or missing out entirely (Sancho the first time round).

ETH has obviously worked with FDJ before, and he's a great player who fixes a big hole in our team, but is that enough to justify going down this all or nothing path again instead of the club identifying a list of good, available targets for our midfield and letting ETH go from there? I'm not sure.

I hope it's worth it but it's a huuuuge risk and there's still a chance we come out of it looking like total mugs.

Nope.

The other bolded parts is the reason we've been shit.

Not because we were backing the manager, it's because they were the wrong managers to back.

Just to make sure.
Have I summed up your impeccable logic below?

Raphinha is of course a Leeds winger. Just like De Bruyne is a Wolfsburg midfielder. You could argue for that Raphinha is a regular attacking starting player for Brazil and that multiple big clubs wanted him but that would surely be a stretch wouldn't it?
Lewandowski (together with Haaland) has not been the most prolific goalscorer in the world for the last three years and he has not been the best player overall. He is just an average 34 year old.
Christensen for free is a bad deal because Real Madrid got Rudiger.
The future revenue selling was made just for the three transfers above and not for rebuilding Camp Nou and paying off debt. And even if it were that would still affect the value for money for your transfers.

De Jongs price is going to be between £72m-90m and you're probably prepared to pay it. That is not going to be as good value for the money as the three transfers above.
How does that work with an agreed fee of €75m plus €10m addons?

At this point I am just assuming that he is not coming and am actually quite encouraged that if we keep up the organisation and application as we have in preseason, we’ll be fine in most games with Eriksen and another in midfield with Bruno ahead - I think also the aggressive nature and passing ability of Martinez will also shore some of our “we need a midfielder!” deficiencies.

Whatever happens, the absolute last thing we should do is panic and overpay for a player that’s further down our shortlist. I’d rather ETH do what he said and develop someone.

How do we know ETH is the right manager to back?

No other big club gives their managers as much control over transfer dealings as we do.

This is certainly true and has to be a worry. Didn't resident Ajax fans mention that transfers and targets were his weakest points and only Overmars brought some sense to that as well?

Reports are that we're in a game of poker. We will be "in the deal" until deadline day. No idea what triggers this deal actually happening, if anything.

Deal will be triggered when someone blinks. FDJ knows Barca need to sell him so he's standing his ground, but it's not easy being told that you are no longer wanted, he's even playing at CB in pre season. If the season starts and he's on the bench he'll be under a lot of pressure. I expect this to end in a compromise from both parties. But even if he doesn't join United, I don't see him with Barca next season, his wages will be too high and I expect them to be more aggressive in pushing him out as time goes by.

Or you can actually google and see where the money comes from.
Barca took huge financially risks and got punished a couple of years ago. Messis monster wage , Coutinho, Dembélé and Griezmann were three megatransfers that all backfired. It was an unacceptable risk to take imo but to be fair no one saw covid-19 coming did they? There are a lot of whining here about Barcas advantages but since LaLiga has a salary cap it limits Barcas action in a manner that the oilclubs/US laughing stock owners don't have to think about and covid-19 made that real obvious.

Barca has made a great transfer window when it comes to value for the money (you can just compare it for what United has got for their money the last five years of transfer) and in the short term I can't see anything leading to short term financial problems. It is just odd that people look at the debt figure without taking into account Barcas team value and exceptional positioning for creating revenue. As it has been presented Barcas current strategy is the right one imo. They have secured short and longterm financing for that strategy and uses the money to invest wisely instead of overpaying stars.
In the thread people also forget that Coutinho has been sold to Aston Villa and Griezmann extended his loan to Atletico Madrid. They were two of the best paid players in the world.

Barcas concern is now mainly about meeting LaLigas salary cap. I'm pretty sure De Jong has to leave to solve this even if it would be very important for Barca to keep him if we just consider what's good for the teams strength. But it is obvious that Barca has been counting on moving De Jong and some more players, Depay, Umtiti, and Pjanic probably being the first ones to come to mind, before the transfer window closes. According to my sources that would mean freeing up 50m/year just in wages and without weakening the team (except for De Jong).

I think the major issue is that you have basically asked for an advance on future earnings of TV rights and possibly the studios and the merchandise. Then instead of being mature about it, it's like a kid who just won the lottery and instead of investing wisely, you have blown it on short-term solutions like Lewandowski who has zero resale value.
If it was a tech start-up, the investors would be pissed off. But since it isn't and it's fan-owned these 'value 'buys' are purely to give the fans a short-term lift. It's populism at its best.

But basically, you are doubling down on things. Fixing a shitting problem by creating different problems.

As to covid and its impact; how come it's only Barca out of the major clubs that have to get an advance on their future earnings? Bayern, Liverpool, and as shitty run a club United is, we did either -- though the LBO that the Glazers employed to buy the club was a form of that. But nevertheless, we didn't sell any of our tv rights to stay alive.

Its wreckless what Laporta is doing. It's like from near terminal, the club instead decided to party like it 1999. Its like people who have had head trauma -- the euphoric and almost giddy feelings they feel before the blunt force trauma does it death knell on the patient.

Could FDJ not take Barcelona to court/an employment tribunal over these differed wages that they are refusing to pay him?

No, legally they don't owe him anything. There is also a possibility (if the former assumption is right) that every other player who is in the same position on deffered wages as Frenkie will call on Barcelona payment to him in case of being sold/moved, etc.
Ironically, this payment might get them in a legally worse position going forward.

Especially when they have just spent over €100M euros on Raphinha & Lewandowski

It might actually come to the stage where Frenkie sees all the money flying around while he is being pushed and says feck that I will not leave or reduce my current contract. The chances he will be benched or freezed while remaining their most valuable asset to sell are pretty slim.

Already said once, that goes against the logic of us still waiting for him, but this outcome wouldn't suprise me in the end either. Although tbf, every other logic tells you that you should collect what you can and get the feck out of there. Still hoping that will be the case.

They are paying what they agreed though
So how come they still owe him 17 Million?
That amount was agreed too to be deferred during the Covid time span and paid later.
The later is now and they don't want to pay him.

Nail on head.

But Bartomeu or something

I've been positive about this for so long, but today is the first day I am accepting this won't happen. Too many reports coming out of him not wanting to join us.

Except Barcelona hasnt pushed him out yet.

He's been brought in the tour..getting game time. And all looks good.

It's not like he's not registered and forced to play with kids for no reason

They don't owe him €17M. They owe him €90M over the next 4 seasons. If they terminate the contract today, Barcelona aren't liable for a single cent owed FdJ beyond July 20th 2022, as stipulated by the existing contract. FdJ is demanding €17M from them to terminate the contract

Pushed in terms of his club agreeing to sell him.

There is no way they will put a player who is worth 70-80 million on the market to play with the kids. Not now and not during the season either.

He will worth pretty much the same come next summer. Unless, they drop him for the season.

Speculating but i think united is backing ETH in this window and probably Jan if possible. We are buying players he already know. That is the safest, smartest, short term tactical way to start new regime rather than buying targets he may not be 100% sure to fit.

Exactly. Very little incentives for him to push for the move right now. Unless we crazily double his wage or something

We might have a case if he's unwanted and not being played much last year.

Mentioned CL finals. By this is it the CL final or the elimination rounds?

Sounds weird I know but sometimes finals is referred to in the elimination stages. I think..

It states getting back to previous revenues so you'd imagine multiple actual finals in the next few years, seems pie in the sky to me

We need to move on from this - don’t really care about what he is owed anymore - too much negativity surrounding this now and we are appearing desperate by hanging on for him. Sounds like he is heavily influenced by his girlfriend and doesn’t sound keen to come to EPL - let alone Manchester - we’ve been here before and it just doesn’t work.

If a player doesn’t really want to come then this will transpire in their performance. He may be a great fit for what ETH wants but I’m not sure the fans will now be that forgiving for him if he has to reluctantly come.

Im sure that there must be a plan B? Time to engage elsewhere as this circus will drag on until Sep 1st and we’ve got another circus to deal with as well in getting Ronaldo out.

Let’s not let these sagas ruin what’s looking like a good preseason.

It's not happening, and I'm sure most people realise it by now even if they won't publicly admit it because of the whole hardcore muppet routine.

Another one rings the bell. Sorry you haven’t achieved muppet level. You are welcome to try again next year. Meanwhile pass on our regards to the other residents of Quitter Street

Why do people always say we need to move on even though theres no real signs saying we need too?
It's an issue between de Jong and Barca. We've done all we can at the moment, when it's sorted between them two, we can finish off the deal. Theres no reason to move on. If ten Hag wants de Jong, and he's had some kind of assurances from him that he'll come and the issues will be sorted, then why should we pull out of the deal? Makes no sense?

Too many reports saying he doesn't want to leave, but nothing recently from the man himself. Just recycled reports for the main part. Frenkie could put an end to this in moments by speaking to ten Hag and saying he's hopefuly of a resolution at Barca and wants to stay so he won't be joining this season. He could also do an interview putting an end to all this crap too, but again, he's not. I think that tells you theres more to this than the media wants you to know.

Don't be a quitter just yet. Hang on and keep on muppeting.

I wish there was a feature on here that showed who had quit on each deal, kind of like a muppet squid game.
