ESPN - Mourinho wants to sign Skriniar and Romagnoli in Jan

Mourinho had problems trying to convince United's decision-makers to make money available for Toby Alderweireld, 29, Jerome Boateng, 30, and Diogo Godin, 32, in the summer because of their age.

But both Skriniar and Romagnoli are 23 and sources have told ESPN FC that he is hopeful the board will be more open to purchasing a younger player.

What say you cafe? Should Jose be given a tonne of money to spend in January to boost his heroic battle for 4th place and to replace his previous transfer failures - or should the next manager be allowed to spend that money?

Just pay that 65m to Leicester and get Maguire in .

I want a date with Scarlett Johansson, that's not happening either. You'd be talking about £120M combined for these 2, and that's if they'd even want to come. Hopefully by January we'll have a new manager anyway.

If rumours are believed, we tried in the summer and he wasn't interested. Can't see him coming in January.
Both are players we'd be interested in, regardless of Mourinho's position.

Suppose it depends what position we are in by then. If we are nowhere near he will likely be gone anyway. If we are in touch then they might give him the money to get fourth. Problem then is if they give him the money and he spends it and we still don't get fourth.

Would they even be interested in playing for Mourinho?

If we are to buy a CB this winter, why not try for De Ligt? He can't be worse than what we already have even at his age, he will only improve further and there's no reason why any future manager won't want him. The likes of City, Barca are quite stacked in this position, we need to throw crazy money at him (if need be) and get him.

They're good young players. Pretty sure we'd be looking at them even if we sack him.

They are good targets. I would welcome them if we can ship out Bailly and Lindelof after due appraisal and definitely concluding they don't have potential, if we are capable of such competence (keep Smalling). Even if we sack Jose, I don't mind going after those two, we could finally settle our CB position.

As for money, Woodward shouldn't deny it's spending when the targets are mint. I can understand vetoing Willian, but not say, Romagnoli.

That is a good point as well. If we are playing the same rubbish and the fans and press are still criticising the team, then why would you join. Especially if there is a chance the manager could go. They might want to hang fire until the summer and see who comes in if anyone.

Who would want to sign for a lame duck manager? Maybe (good god I hope not) he manages to limp to the end of a 3rd season. But does anyone actually see him leading a title challenge in year 4? If not he will be

Just feels like he has desperately spewed out 2 big, sexy names he thinks would excited fans and help him kept his job. Might as well throw Messi in there while we are at it

Unless the manager changes I think we will have huge problems keeping stars like De Gea and Pogba nevermind signing them

Oh they are nice names and the right age. Would be great to see a new manager build a team around them - that's the sort of long term thinking we have lacked for about 5 years

I agree. I think we would be looking, but they might want assurances on who the manager is going to be. They might not be seeing it as a great career move at the moment.

We are not getting him this winter and by the summer, we may seem a much less appealing destination for what will be a highly in-demand CB.

No, he should be forced to play Bailly and Lindelöf forever. I am also outraged that we allowed Ferguson and other managers to replace the transfers that didn’t work out. Veron should have been kept.

Skriniar could be a goer if Inter drop into the Europa and we're still in the UCL however it's more likely we'll be the Europa team and Inter will be in the UCL so yeah cant see it happening. Plus he wasn't interested in the summer

This. Unless we massively overpay, we are not getting them, certainly not in Jan. Maybe we can try for De Ligt or Pavard next summer, they seem more realistic.

I can't see any top defender moving in Jan though.

he should make an attempt to play the 2 guys he already signed in the Summer

We have been planning pretty well interms of defenders. Its just that they weren't good enough or didn't work out.

Just guesswork after the recent news we enquired in the summer

I think Chelsea have tried under Conte and Sarri to bring Romagnoli to their club and it hasn’t happened. I don’t know exactly why not however maybe he’s not overly keen on leaving Italy. Chelsea fans on here will know more.

As for Skriniar, wasn’t it already reported that we already have a £57m bid turned down last summer? As seen with Perisic and Icardi (most likely refusing to negotiate on his release clause behind the scenes), Inter ain’t going to let their best players go cheaply and without a figure.

I rate Skriniar and no doubt he would improve us however I can’t help but feel that the time to sign him was 17/18 when he was available relatively cheap. IF we were on the ball that summer, we could’ve had Skriniar and Maguire for the price of Lindelöf!

He should elevate your defence ;)

Probably. We often seem to believe that players are isolated from real life. Even if they were, most of them have advisors with an interest in protecting them. You would have to be a huge Man Utd-fan with a lifelong dream of playing here or very money motivated to chose a move to us right now if you have several good options. I would probably say that staying in Milan or Inter for another six months will be an okey option in january for both of them.

They wantes 50m for perisic, skriniar would cost 100m

Nah. He's signed Bailly and Lindelof who've been absolutely rubbish. Rather save that money for someone else.

And better defenders aren't going to suddenly make us play better football.

I think Jones, followed by Rojo should be the first ones out.

Exactly. Any defender we signed would just be seriously overworked.

Yeah, deals are getting harder to do and doubly so in January, and I doubt de Ligt would want to come here under the current circumstances, I think @andersj makes a good point, no matter who you blame there is a toxic cloud over United right now and with several big team options I can see a number of players being reluctant to come here.

Back him or sack him. Signing two highly regarded centre backs who are the age they are is hardly a risk.

Jeez, our next manager could be too scared to make a move if this is the criteria.

So now managers at United need to get all their signings spot on??

I don't believe a word of bollocky articles like this but if by some miracle it were true that the board refused to sign a 29, 30 and 32 year old then they were dead fecking right.

Yes. This is true. Funny thing is some fans actually believe this.
