I think the deal was definitely on but that the transfer ban being upheld has made Griezmann decide that he can't leave Atletico and probably more importantly, Simeone if they can't replace him.

I'd imagine that both him and United were aware that this could be a problem and us briefing the media saying we've cooled our interest and him seeming to say that he's staying and committed to Atletico allows both parties to save a wee bit of face.

We may have been willing to buy him and wait for a replacement for Zlatan until next season but I think now that Griezmann is seemingly unavailable until January at the earliest then we are going to spend a big sum to replace Zlatan now. I would imagine that we would then move for Griezmann next summer or possibly even in January depending on how the season is panning out.

I have a feeling we're going to sign him in the winter when Athletico's transfer ban comes to an end.
Yeah right.... when has that ever happened in the past 7 years that a top players leaves a top club for another top club in winter?

And who is Atletico going to sign when we have Lacazette at #9? We ain't swapping players midseason, this ain't no partnership.

No chance in the winter, maybe summer but we may pursue other targets by then. No way Athleti would sell mid season, they could be in the race for La Liga or CL and it'd crazy for them to sell him then.

This ship has sailed imo, probably go as far as saying he'll sign a new deal.

He's not coming.
Some posts are embarrassing.
Griezmann is a great player, but is not meltdown-worthy.

It doesn't mean will be a terrible window without him, he can't win titles by himself or change the status of a team; only Messi MAYBE could do that in the world.

The vast majority of those "world beaters" out there would be only good players in the 90s and early in the 2000s.
Some players we call wc these days..my God.
Ronaldo Nazario or Van Basten would cost 1 billion now.

The gap between a very good player and what we call "world class" is not so big; with the exception of Messi/Ronaldo/Neymar/a fit Bale/the best version of Pogba and maybe Dybala and Alexis Sanchez.

For example: i read people saying - "oh, but with Lukaku we can't win the Champions League".
Ok. And with Lewandowski, Bayern can't win the CL idem.
There's not a big difference between "top players" anymore(in terms of their impact).

A strong unity is better than to rely on specific names.
I suspect, for example, that people would moan if any Chelsea player(but Hazard and Kante) were linked with United, but look what they can do as a team.

He's been right a few times and doesn't make a sing and dance about any of it. In fact rarely gets drawn into talking about it.

He wasn't even wrong about this one, it was clear as day the transfer has been on for a long while and United briefed the press that our priorities shifted from 10 to 9 very recently.

From what I recall he never claimed it was a confirmed transfer, just that all parties involved wanted to make it happen this summer and that seems to be the case until very recently.
Well said.

Time to stop torturing ourselves over this one. It simply isn't happening this summer. I don't believe that United had a sudden change of focus due to a realization that a true centre forward is a more pressing concern. That's nonsense. Our needs and targets have been well defined for quite some time. Similarly, I don't believe that Griezmann "bottled it" or, himself, had a sudden change of heart. Rather, I believe that both United and a Griezmann knew that certain things needed to fall into place for this to happen. First, United needed to qualify for the Champions League (done) and be willing to pay Atletico the fee outlined in the buyout clause (presumably not a problem). Second, Atletico's transfer ban needed to be lifted (didn't come to pass). My guess is that these parameters were well-established and known to both camps. I don't think United will have been surprised at all that, in the circumstances (and at least for now), Griezmann won't move.

I also don't think Griezmann should be vilified for staying this summer. That sort of loyalty is somewhat rare. Moreover, if you take an objective look at things, Atletico may be just as likely to win trophies next season as a United.

I suspect that this move may be resurrected next summer. I doubt any bridges have been burned. United will have had contingency plans in place. We'll address our needs this summer. If all goes well, Griezmann could move a year from now (at which time either Mata or Mkhitaryan could be replaced). If he signs a new contract with an increased buyout clause, then the deal likely never happens. If he doesn't, it is likely just on hold.
Voice of reason, no need for hysterics.

Griezmann: "Now more then ever Atleti."

If anything significant changes, thread will be reopened. Until then, go wild in the Perisic thread or something.
OK what has happened??? Why was this tread reopened?

Are you wuming us?

Well at least it wasn't turned into a huge fiasco, It would of been alot worse knowing he is staying at atleti just as the season starts.

He did say he will sort his future out in 2 weeks, 2 weeks ago. He was probably waiting for the outcome of the registration ban. :(

Reminder: 2018 World cup upcoming. No marquee player will leave current club to other club for half season. No chance to get Griez on January.

It kind of is a fiasco at the moment to be honest.

Also, as much as I don't think we'll get Griezmann, I still think this saga will go on all summer.

I would normally agree with that, but Griezmann is France's star player, of course he would be in the team even if he joined us in January.

A fiasco?

The transfer window hasn't even opened yet.
The transfer window doesn't need to be open for it to be a fiasco.

This has been going on for a few months now and the media are loving it.

The fact that there are 116 pages in this thread before the transfer window is even open is also a bit mental.

It's only a saga when you allow it to be one.

I personally suggest locking this thread - it's pointless. Messi, Neymar and Griezmann aren't happening anytime soon.

It shouldn't have been closed in the first place. Posters wanted to vent but had nowhere to rant and rave So were spamming the twitter thread which is supposed to be tweets only.
Re-opening this thread was a good idea imo.

The fact the English press all had the same line at the same time implies someone at United briefed it to them, which is a shame because it looks ridiculous now.

Taking Griezmann's words at face value he has decided to stay at Atleti. The timing makes it look like he has done that because of Atleti's transfer ban. All very fair reasoning. If someone from the club had briefed that I think the reaction would have been much less hysterical.

Personally, if Griezmann has stayed at Atleti to help them because they can't replace him if he goes, I think its an honourable thing to do. Obviously I would have preferred him to come to United but, fair play, he seems to have decided to stick it out with them while they need it most.

That's true I guess.

Obviously I'll be disappointed if we don't manage to sign Griezmann, but I'm actually pretty relaxed about the whole situation.

Jose will be putting pressure on Woodward to make a statement this transfer window, reinforcing the squad with quality additions.

I'm sure there are probably many players out there that we don't know well or haven't even been linked with which will turn out to be good signings.

If I was an Atleti fan I'd be pretty pissed off with Griezmann right now, given all the transfer teasing and what he's said about wanting to move for trophies etc that tweet he's made is incredibly two-faced.

Seems to me it's more about us dropping our interest than any transfer ban.

That said I'm annoyed about this - we shouldn't be turning down players of this calibre no matter what our short term priorities are.

Dude it is not us dropping our interest.

This new came literally moments after the CAS ruling about their transfer ban. Why would United change their mind based on that, doesn't make any sense.

The thing is Griezmann holds all the cards for this transfer, it is his decision. It seems like he only wanted to leave Atlético if they wouldn't have a transferban and could use the money of his transfer to replace him. Which actually means he cares about that club and doesn't want to abandon them in their moment of need, which is a thing Atlético fans should be freaking thankful about but obviously sucks for us. It does mean the transfer can still happen next season when their transfer ban is over but for now United will have to look elsewhere as Griezmann doesn't want to totally feck over Atlético.

I hope his statement says ''I am going to stay here because you have been found guilty of cheating' or something to that effect.

People being frustrated seems like a natural thing when such news hits home. They need a place to vent said frustration, redcafe for alot of people is that place. If you shut off the dedicated transfer thread and forbid people from venting frustration in the transfer tweet section, where do they have to go ?

If you genuinely 'need' to spam a thread on the caf to 'vent frustration' because we're not signing Griezmann then you need seriously re-evaluate your life.

Our interest 'cooled' an hour after the ban was announced. You really think these 2 things are not related?

By all accounts, it looks like he's staying because Athleti need him. Which is honorable.

We're always too quick to say players have no loyalty. Then when one does, it's then said he has no ambition!

It's definitely because of the transfer ban. He liked this tweet on twitter-
