Can we not just buy who Athletico want and loan them to them as a way to circumvent this transfer ban?
Probably because there's no-one they would rather have than Griezmann. Anyone they bought to replace him would be a lesser option.

Perhaps not the correct thread but none of the forwards we are linked with really really excite me. They all have some pros and cons. Griezmann too, obviously.

Can Atletico appeal the transfer ban by the way? Or was this decision made on the back of an appeal?

If Griezmann does end up at Utd he will have fairly trolled the Atletico fans unnecessarily before leaving them. Doesn't make sense him putting out that tweet yesterday if he planned on leaving. I'm of the opinion he had a verbal agreement with Atletico that he could leave if the transfer ban was lifted, once it wasn't he was obliged to stay for another year.

Time to stop torturing ourselves over this one. It simply isn't happening this summer. I don't believe that United had a sudden change of focus due to a realization that a true centre forward is a more pressing concern. That's nonsense. Our needs and targets have been well defined for quite some time. Similarly, I don't believe that Griezmann "bottled it" or, himself, had a sudden change of heart. Rather, I believe that both United and a Griezmann knew that certain things needed to fall into place for this to happen. First, United needed to qualify for the Champions League (done) and be willing to pay Atletico the fee outlined in the buyout clause (presumably not a problem). Second, Atletico's transfer ban needed to be lifted (didn't come to pass). My guess is that these parameters were well-established and known to both camps. I don't think United will have been surprised at all that, in the circumstances (and at least for now), Griezmann won't move.

I also don't think Griezmann should be vilified for staying this summer. That sort of loyalty is somewhat rare. Moreover, if you take an objective look at things, Atletico may be just as likely to win trophies next season as a United.

I suspect that this move may be resurrected next summer. I doubt any bridges have been burned. United will have had contingency plans in place. We'll address our needs this summer. If all goes well, Griezmann could move a year from now (at which time either Mata or Mkhitaryan could be replaced). If he signs a new contract with an increased buyout clause, then the deal likely never happens. If he doesn't, it is likely just on hold.

If anything you have to say fair fecks to him for choosing not to leave them in the shit. He could easily have trebled his wages and got the move he apparently wanted, but felt the need to do the right thing. It's pretty commendable.

If Griezmann doesn't come, by my reckoning he's missing out on about £5million per year (£100k per week?). That's a lot of money to turn down and an incredible display of loyalty. That level of loyalty is what you'd expect from someone who would never leave, no matter the circumstances, as opposed to just having a slight change of heart.
It's also strange there has been a lot of noise surrounding this deal, no small amount from Griezmann himself.
It seems a bit of an odd one it's fallen apart so quickly. I don't want to do it to myself but I do wonder if there are still more twists to come!

It's funny that no-one was talking about the transfer ban? Did everyone just forget about it? Or did we assume it would be repealed? It was a bit of a stretch to think he would just leave if they couldn't transfer anyone in to replace him.

I don't think many people thought we'd make the champions league tbf. That was hurdle number one.

Good stuff. Closing thread with this as final post.

And this:

Griezmann: "Now more then ever Atleti."

If anything significant changes, thread will be reopened. Until then, go wild in the Perisic thread or something.

Do we really want to buy him next summer? Are we supposed to keep a place open for him in the team and suffer in the interim? This could be an opportunity. For example, we could buy Sanchez for half of Griezmann's price AND get a striker at the same time. It would probably be better overall, since Sanchez is around the same level of Griezmann and we can replace Ibra at the same time.

Then why does Griezmann hint strongly that he is staying?
I don't know. I just heard the rumour around the club. If he has genuinely changed his mind probably no-one bar Woodward and Mourinho know about it yet.

This is interesting but how come you have only told us now, that you have a contact who works for United, what does your contact do for United?
Never been asked. I won't say exactly what they do in case it identifies them, they're not involved directly in transfers but they're definitely in a position to hear the gossip.

I still feel gutted about this tbh. How many world class players that we missed for trivial things ? Thiago, Hazard, Sneijder, Fabregas and now Griezmann. Imagine what would have happened if we could have gotten all those.

Terrible.

So he/she are quite high up to be able to hear the official gossip from the transfer guys. I hope your not wuming us, so just to confirm, Griezmann is still very much on?

Dig up stupid!
Still think this will happen but these kind of huge transactions are never quick, Ronaldos 80m was a quick completion but it essentially took half a season to sort out

Fwiw I see the situation as the player being open to the move but not willing to force atleticos hand. Atletico can smell our money and are holding out for the release clause. United think they can get him for less and are trying to negotiate the fee down

It'll be a long saga this one with media outlets continually swinging the griezometer because they know it'll generate clicks more than anything else

I'm positive he'll be here start of the season and he'll be brilliant because he's absolutely mint

As far as the club gossip goes yes it's still on.

If a mod wants to PM me I'll be more specific in what they do and other rumours they have shared. Then we can see if they're full of it or not!

Stop doing it to yourselves lads. That message he posted on social media, a few hours after United's "cooling interest" and a few hours after the CAS decision is very much telling. He said a decision would be made within two weeks, and he's made it. This one is over.

I don't believe in this anymore. It was all about that Atleticos transfer ban. He told in interview two weeks a go that he will decide about his future inside two weeks. And yesterday was almost two weeks from that. And yesterday this deal collapsed very fast so i think he have told United already that he will move to Ot only if Atletico can replace him. I respect his choice. But feel depressed same time. :)

edit: A little bit slow. ;)

100% agree.

Shame for us but absolutely the decent thing to do consudering the transfer ban. Flip side is that you never know with injuries and the money we would have guaranteed. Makes it even more commendable.

I think it is quite plausible that we are wanting to get our other business done first and then we will revisit this later on in the window to ensure we don't have to pay inflated fees for other players we want. Even if he has changed his mind, I wouldn't be surprised if we make one last big push for him this window.

He should stop leaking the club news to you, though, whatever he's right or wrong. :D

Look, it's quite simple. Buy Bale and play him in the centre this season. Then buy Griezmann next summer and switch Bale out to the right, with Griezmann as the ten.
