Lukaku is a goal scoring number 9.
People are dismissing the fact we need to replace Ibra. Oh we're not improving if we swap Ibra for Lukakau but the fact remains we need to replace him regardless if we sign Antoine or not.
Lukaku can spearhead a 4-3-3. If Fabinho is joining us then a midfield 3 is a must. That leaves Griezmann playing as a 9 which Jose clearly thinks can't happen or we play him inside right which doesn't solve a thing for us.
I'm trusting Jose on this one.
Griezmann is the type of player you change your formation for. Most journos have come out with a story linking us with him up until yesterday. I don't think Mourinho has gotten cold feet, I reckon AG had because of the transfer ban.

We desperately need the goals from the midfield and Griezmann has scored 25-30 goals per season for past 3 seasons. I know we are in desperate situation striker wise but I'd still go with Griezman and look somewhere else instead of wasting 100 million on Lukaku who's not worth even 50 considering his lack of technical ability. I don't see how us signing Lukaku is different than Liverpool signing benteke or Tottenham signing Darren Bent.

Yet Mbappe is not leaving and Morata is going to another club. So If griezmann is our 3rd choice, and we're not targeting him, who are we chasing?
Maybe we have had some good news on Mbappe?

Why do posters immediately place us into face saving etc. Im guessing a lot of you were bullied as children?
If we sign Lukaku then it's clear to me what happened. Costa can't go to Atletico due to the ban which negates Chelsea's need for Lukaku. This ruling could have given us a straight path to that signing. A proper number 9.

Very possible.

It's all a bit (excitingly or frustratingly, depending on how you take all this) complicated.

So many players indirectly in the mix here.

Gareth Bale. Mbappe, Morata, James Rodriguez. Romelu Lukaku, Belloti, Diego Costa, Lacazette, Etc.

If Real get Mbappe, it could mean Bale can leave and we might get him. If we get Mbappe, Madrid will likely keep Morata and Bale. If Costa stays at Chelsea, Lukaku becomes more available. If we get Morata, Madrid will have no contest for Mbappe. All crazy.

Lukaku's move will be interesting. He has Chelsea, Dortmund, United and even Atletico possibly as options. But which of them really wants him?

Let's see how all these play out.

I'd be very pissed if our main signing this summer is Lukaku. His first touch is worse than Rooney's.
Who cares about his first touch? He's a goal scoring machine.
I thought the same about Kane but having seen what a consistent goal scorer who brings others into play can do, I'm starting to warm to him.

I disagree. Martial has shown absolutely nothing under Mourinho and Rashford is far from consistent enough. There's no way we win the league with either of those up front, imo, especially as we don't have tonnes of goals coming from elsewhere at present.

We won't win the league with Lukaku or Belotti either, so save the money until a better 9 comes along.

Last summer is looking like a blip in an otherwise crap record under Woodward. We always seem so reactive in the transfer market, like we don't truly have a solid plan.

People want to mention it only being June 1st but we hear that every year and it generally rumbles on till the end, by which point the "calm down" crowd are going ballistic themselves

I was always under the impression that we were after a striker and a wide player this window. Seems odd that we'd pull out of moving for Griezmann to sign a striker when it was supposed to be both.

If we don't end up getting Griezmann and sign Lukaku, Dier, Keane and Perisic i'll be very annoyed and not be looking forward to next season.

Yeah he is, against dross. He doesn't score against the top teams so how is that going to help in the Champions League?

How many players had we signed at this point last season?

If plans have changed post Ibra injury, the timing of all of this is strange all the same journos who are reporting it have been saying for weeks it's happening.

It's not as if we only found out today that Zlatan will be missing most of next season, most likely the transfer ban being upheld changed Griezmann's mind or similar. This is just face saving PR guff.

Surely has to be do to do with the ban? Maybe Griezmann has stated privately he would only move if ban was overturned so they could get a replacement ?

Makes no sense doing all this supposed groundwork then an hour after ban gets announced we brief the press saying we ain't interested anymore?

The ban makes the deal more complicated because as people have been saying to get rid of the jewel in the crown then they maybe are demanding the money up front to make it worth their while ?

Both sides know this so Griezmann stays a little longer.

I can understand why he is not he priority but having said that he is better than any other no 10 we have, maybe not 100 million up front better though and that's why we have decided to look elsewhere.

Rather than bring 4 in bring in 6 and improve the balance of the squad as a whole rather than a luxury? A left back, cb (or 2), dcm, cf and then a winger (or 2).

May even have to invest in a goalie.

He would have been a great buy and maybe it will still happen but in Mkhitaryan and Mata plus Rooney still not being gone we are over stacked in the no 10 role.

The worst thing we could do is spend 100 million and then struggle to fit him in (although doing the groundwork you'd think we would have planned for this).

Maybe we can't get rid of Rooney. I know I wouldn't buy him and that could hold up the outlay especially on wages.

Something odd is going on.

He's one of the World's best players and has played in a system much more defensive than ours, yet continued to bang in vital goals. He's hardly a luxury. I've been a huge advocate for Jose this season, giving him the benefit of the doubt because I've always thought he'd be the manager to take us forward and he was just getting settled. If he is prioritising Belotti and Lukaku over fecking Griezmann though, then I'm genuinely lost for words. Mbappe isn't coming here, he's Madrid bound. Neither is Morata who prefers Italy for his wife etc. Not to add, all 4 of those players are far inferior to Griezmann.

I can almost guarantee our attack would be better off with Rashford up front and Griezmann behind or even Griezmann up top than Belotti or Lukaku who's first touch makes Rooney look like peak Messi.

All I know is, if our star signing this summer is Lukaku or Belotti, we aren't winning the title. City have already signed a far superior player to them both in Silva. Coupled with the fact that our attack is probably the worst of the top 6 and you have a genuine problem. Griezmann is the type of player to close that gap and elevate us a level, he's been doing it at Atleti for seasons now.

CAS or not, it does not matter. If it does, Griezmann would not have given the 6/10 interview, the jose-watch ad and the spanish media close to the club would not have reported about his want to leave. The most Griezmann has mentioned about possibly staying is that the rumours of the move being confirmed is true and he needs to speak with his representatives - not really a declaration of staying.

So I would rather trust what Griezmann has said/done, AM sources have said, rather than listen to UK journos and their sources.

If we're looking at Fabinho it looks like we're intending to play a 4-3-3, missing out on Griezmann is hardly the end of the world. Lukaku and Belotti would both be fantastic additions, no use sulking and throwing our toys out of the pram because they're not Griezmann.

Cant wait to see which big lump mourinho has chosen over Griezmann
what a fecking travesty

We're not getting Mbappe, so we're rejecting the best number 10 in football at the minute to sign a big lump of a forward?

No, we're not. We're just not buying a player from a club that has a ban on registering new players.

So I would rather trust what Griezmann has said/done, AM sources have said, rather than listen to UK journos and their sources.
but it has obviously come from the club.

This is pretty shit. I know we need another striker, but our attack will still be shite if we don't address the lack of quality behind the main striker.

Griezmann would have solved that. We'd be much better with Griezmann behind either Rashford or Martial in attack than with one of Lukaku or Morata simply replacing Ibrahimovic in our current squad.

And no, Perisic is not the answer.

Yeah he is, against dross. He doesn't score against the top teams so how is that going to help in the Champions League?
People used to say that about Ronaldo, Kane and Higuain etc
I'm not saying we'll buy him but I can see why we would if Jose goes down that road.
A mobile, powerful, goal scoring number 9 who can bring the widemen into play.

The BBC is the gold standard. In a sea of shit Twitter ITK's and journo's from the mirror, BBC is spot on. They are running the exact same story.

Plus Di Marzio yesterday. The two most reliable transfer outlets out there.

This has nothing to do with the ban imo. Di Marzio reported this days ago but we all laughed it off because we surely thought the club couldn't genuinely turn down the opportunity to sign Griezmann. Also I doubt he would have rejected us even with the ban, considering all the public statements he made, knowing full well of Atleti's situation.

This is all just fecking frustrating.

Just to add :

The deal with Juventus to sign Paul Pogba required us to pay the fee over two Summers . Half of that 105 mil Euro fee has to be paid this Summer.

Maybe we don't have the cash resources to pay that and Griezmann's full fee at once. We are not Apple.

Just seen the updates. Feck. It could be a ploy by us to force Athletico to reduce the fee but seems unlikely. Best to move to another thread:(

Why they wouldn't want to sell or why you would not be willing to pay 100 mil € all at once?
Well they'd want all the money now because it'll be worth less in the coming years. Why wouldn't we be willing to pay it all in one whack?

Yes BBC has a higher standard, but they have had their fair share of calling transfers wrong. Even if it was a briefing from the club, it was a calculated move to generate buzz. Just look at these forums to see the noise it has created!

And I am not basing off any random ITK. I am looking at what Griezmann has said and done.
