PL D FA Premier League

Manchester United 1:1 Liverpool

Post-match discussion

Sun, 15 January 2017

Very mature performance from Liverpool, whilst we were quite the opposite.

Dallying about in the first half played into their hands, then we go the complete opposite for the last 15. We did have 3-4 really good chances that we didn't take, which we still need to iron out.

A missed opportunity. Hopefully we can come back in the next game and not let this affect the confidence we have built up on this run.

A 1:1 flatters Liverpool and really puts to bed the argument that their midfield, or specifically Henderson is a better midfield player than any of our players. Whilst we did not win it does not dent our hopes for the top 4, in fact I am more confident that we will get top 4.

Don't forget Liverpool won away to Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City, yet they drew with us and we pinned them back most of the time. Poor finishing again let us down. I'm disappointed that we lost two points today, but I am positive that we are still unbeaten and look like a side that really mean business.
They had Coutinho in most of those games. Liverpool pressed well to take the ball back and it surprised some of our players. Also, when we pressed, the luck was not on our side. 7 times out of 10, Herrera has some of the balls he missed when pressing. This time, it went through his legs...

So, in the post match show, the pundits are:
Liverpool (Souness)
Liverpool (Carragher)
Arsenal (Henry)

Why are there no MUFC pundits in the studio?

It is ok , here comes Jamie Rednapp to balance things up.

Found it alarming how Mourinho dumped tactics and went to hoof-ball like that.

Pogba has form for losing his head like that. Hopefully it's the worst he'll ever be in our shirt.

Herrera continued to perform no matter what system, which was impressive.

Was extremely disappointing to see our team, apart from Herrera, play so badly. Nobody stepped up and controlled or calmed the game and nobody could be seen as a dependable or reliable head.

Grateful for the point, given the circumstances.

Thought Herrera was average, lots of wayward passes although a good setup to Mkhitaryan first half.

Not sure whether suited to such games, Fellaini's physicality clearly changed things. Herrera was definitely not covering enough ground first half.

Easy to criticise Pogba but the players around him need to do their share of running.

Agreed. Liverpool played better than expected, at least better than their mid week performance. We weren't clicking as usual in the final third. But yeah - unbeaten in 16 - I'll take that. Onwards towards 4 completely winnable league fixtures leading up to the City game (which is obviously also winnable).
Exactly what I thought when looking at the fixture list after the full time whistle - we should put a few past City.

Klopp's Liverpool have gone to the likes of Chelsea and battered them this season. We hung in there and got a vital point.

This new Utd - I love them. I just knew we would score even at 80 minutes. Jose has changed us so much in such a short space of time.

Another awful officiating decision along with particularly terrible finishing contributes to us not winning. Firmino passes to Lallana who's 2-3 yards offside and obviously interfering with play; Rojo has to clear and a corner is given instead of an offside. Then we had the 3-4 opportunities that we should be scoring at least 1-2 of.

We need a thread showing all the chances that as a team we're missing in tight games: West Ham, Arsenal, Burnley, Liverpool x2, Stoke, Everton... Not good enough.

What bother me is they played a kid in the left back and we didn't try to attack from that side, it really is annoying to have a left back that doesn't give any help in attack at all

Created a lot of good opportunities which we squandered. Gifted them a goal.

Pogba was atrocious.

Happy with a point in the end but yeah. Shot ourselves in the foot.

Edit: a lot might be an hyperbole, but 2 one on ones and one or 2 other really good instances should have resulted in more than a goal.

Pathetic performance from us. We completely bottled it, and still should have won. If we had played anywhere near our potential, we would be running away with it before the end of the first half. How can Mourinho so obviously fail to prepare the team when it's so obvious we're going to be playing against a team that will press hard and crowd out the center of the pitch?

It's exactly the same thing that happened against City at home, and that time at least we had somewhat of an answer to it in the second half. Today, apart from the first five minutes of the second half, we had no answer until we started punting it long. It's embarrassing to watch, especially against a team as obviously limited as Liverpool are.

And how the hell does Rooney get on the pitch? He breaks down almost every attack he's involved in.

This is a ridiculous post.

This is a game we'd have lost under similar circumstances before. This team has resilience.

Firstly, you have to give credit to Liverpool for their other worldly pressing. It was mightily impressive. People were critical of our reaction to it, but I thought we coped as well as we could.

We created several clear cut chances, but Mignolet played very, very well. NBC named him man of the match. Which says a lot.

As for the subs. The responses here were poor. Look at our equalizer. A Rooney dribble and cross for Fellaini to head onto the post, which led to the goal. It wasn't as pretty, but it worked.

Massive credit to Mourinho. Liverpool didn't let us play, and I am happy with the come back.

Pogba has his first shite game and already the cnuts are crawling out of the woodwork since he's been shutting them up all season.

First shite game? You must be joking. He has been shite in many games. Liverpool away, Chelsea and many more against poorer sides.

With the quality of chances we had, we really should have won. Mignolet winning MoM is testament to that. As such, we look at this as dropped points.

Instead a brainless mistake meant that we chased the match for 50 minutes.

With that said, scoring in the final 10 is much better psychologically (for players and fans alike) than conceding. A small victory from a disappointing draw.

United were the better team obviously. Big mistake from Pogba. Mistake from Mourinho by putting Rooney on instead of Rashford or Mata, Rooney simply isn't good. Think a fresh Rashford would have made a lot of that left flank just like Martial did the first 30 minutes.

We were really disappointing, should've taken the game to them considering our recent form and the players they were missing.

We were sloppy and lacked intensity throughout so I'm just relieved we didn't lose, that would've been disastrous.

What a shit game. First a watched a god awful Nice (how the f.ck can such shit side lead the french league is beyond me, they look like a third tier side) and then the derby. Liverpool were there for the taking. No Matip, no Mane, no Coutinho for most of the game. The players didn't play to their potential even before the Pogba handball. The occasion got to them. One of Pogba's worst games in recent memory. At least we saved the draw. Rooney offered nothing. Should have put Rashford on.

What bother me is they played a kid in the left back and we didn't try to attack from that side, it really is annoying to have a left back that doesn't give any help in attack at all

Not just that but Milner other side was clearly on the back foot whenever Valencia launched himself at him.

When Pogba is playmaker we do not have a pattern in attack, nor the personnel to set up transitional play effectively behind him against teams pressing so well and so high.

It was always going to be close. Pool are a good team. Look we arent going to dominate like we do against the poorer teams at Old Trafford, but i still think on the number of chances created, we should have won.

Despite not being that great ourselves, we still had the better chances than Liverpool. I will take the point but the mistakes made in the first half could have been avoided.

I thought the subs in the second half especially that of Rooney and Mata were not the right ones to make.

Rooney's sub also meant Pogba playing deeper and he almost cost us another goal with his sloppiness in possession. Don't want to be too harsh on Pogba though, as I think he will learn from this and get better.

Herrera had an excellent game and so did Rojo.

And Zlatan is boss.

Weird reaction, I think. We didn't take our chances (again), which is frustrating. But we had the better of them over the course of the ninety.

Some people are getting carried away with how good they think we actually are.

Yup. When did we become so good that shading a match against a well coached Liverpool team is "dreadful"? Weird standard some are applying on here.

Were we really that shit? They pressed which put us off quite a bit. But we defended well. Both teams were sloppy in this high pressure match, but we fought really hard and looked incredibly tired at the end.

Against the second highest scorers in the league, I thought we played well. 1 point, 16 games unbeaten.

Yes

Whining about the offside equaliser. FFS. They were shit all afternoon and wasn't going to score all day. We gifted them a goal start what do they want, jam on it?

Draw was a fair result.

Good cameo from Fellaini.

Still in touch with top 4.

it was felliani's introduction that changed the game dynamics. Suddenly we were contesting for second balls and rushing them up a bit. Mata needed a bit more time to impose himself and martial should have stated. But omg rooney. He can't do shet
Agree with this. Was an odd match. Pass conversion rates appalling for both teams.

Another game where poor finishing and stupidity in the defensive end leads to dropped points. A blown chance to be really in the mix. Rather than take advantage in a match where we could make a difference we are going to have to hope for others to do our rivals in.

The biggest positive is that Shitty and Liverpoo have both dropped significant points today.. we are 2 points off

Still disappointing though as I really thought we could do it today.

Pogba really off the pace today, which I think was the difference.

Too many idiots have form for getting carried away on here.

Seriously deflating performance from us today and shows we have a load of improvements still to make. I thought Liverpool were completely in control and have dropped points thanks to our offside goal. Feels like a hollow point to me.

Getting a draw when we played as shite as we did is some achievement. Pogba can have a awful game, but the fraud accusations are just embarrassing.

Found it alarming how Mourinho dumped tactics and went to hoof-ball like that.

Why? We were struggling to pass the ball to each other in any sort of coherent manner... So going long to Fellaini made sense... Our shit passing couldn't hinder that.

Pogba has his first shite game and already the cnuts are crawling out of the woodwork since he's been shutting them up all season.
People are saying he had a shite game not that he's shite. Tell me how they are wrong? I must admit though that for a world class player(which he is IMHO) his finishing has been utter rubbish not only today but all season.

I was actually quite impressed with the performance, barring the individual mistakes (Pogba, Rojo nearly gifting a goal).

- Martial was disappointing but it was clear he had 3-4 guys constantly around him.
- Had great chances to lead in first half (Pogba, Henrikh)
- Whilst they had more shots on target, none were really anything more than routine saves for De Gea
- Rooney...meh, but his cross for Fellaini lead to the goal
- Middle 1/2 of second half we absolutely dominated them
- Valencia was always causing problems but again his final ball was lacking (thinking the chance shortly after the equaliser when he was put through but hit the first defender)
- Bringing on Fellaini, whilst I would rather Rashord gets on the pitch, it changed the game for our benefit, don't like playing that way but it was successful

I just think, City lost, so it's a point closer and we need to make sure the next four league games are all won and keep the pressure on the others above us.

The ball came off Rojo, wasn't a pass. And you seem to forget that you scored from an offside goal?
