Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

You know what pissed me off even more than seeing us get a battering to some average league one side.. LVG signing fecking autographs after the game. Could you imagine Fergie doing that? No chance.

Think it showed arrogance and calmness.

Don't worry I've got this kind of feel. Might be clutching at straws there but I'm desperate..

I'm so speechless :(. Just get rid of his 3-5-2. Our CBs are core British, they can't adapt to anything but back tradition back 4.

FFS, some of you lot need to calm down. Its a cup game and how many times have we seen this happening. Two of the players who started are first team players. Credit to MK dons they wanted it more than us and deservedly won it.

This loss has nothing to do with the formation/ personnel. Just another bad day at the office. This is a one off cup game. Just don't get your knickers in a twist cause you are going to get laughed at work tomorrow. Its just a poor performance and I am sure this is as embarrassing to the players as it is to us.

Problems run deeper than just another bad day at the office, that's three out of three this season and all of the bad days from last season. We are in a mess and there isn't a short term fix but persisting with this style of football and formation is going to be a massive risk. Manager wasn't completely at fault but in the three games so far he has not made good decisions, he is not the miracle worker, tactical genius so many thought he was, he might turn this round but he could fail spectacularly as well. We shouldn't panic but this is going to be a really long and difficult season it is not just a bad day.

 You wouldn't have said that about Moyes at all.

Who cares if he wouldn't have? Moyes had no pedigree at the top level of the game. he came in with everything to prove and looked out of his depth from the start. Van Gaal comes in with a massive reputation that demands some patience. he also looks and acts the part. A lot of people were against Moyes before he even became manager. As early as a few years ago when he was mooted to be Fergie's favourite to succeed him.

I think a lot of people had unreasonable expectations from this season. He has already said the players need 2 months to get used to the system. We would have played better had we had Kagawa still on. Has a lot of dead wood to shift before end of the transfer window though.

I thought LVG was a fiery, no nonsense type character? it's been the polar opposite so far, has he even once during these first 3 games stood up off his seat and displayed any sort of emotion?? I thought he'd be the perfect candidate to kick these players arses into gear but so far I'm unconvinced, early days yet though.

Another baffling substitution today (Powell for Wilson) that left me baffled as to what formation we were even playing.. I can see why the players are confused.

With the arrival of ADM I really hope we ditch the 352 and go with 4 at the back. It seems nobody is comfortable with the current system, and with our new number 7, we really shouldn't be trying to play it any more.

LvG underestimated them. Result pisses me off a lot but we have also got to consider the backline for us. Two guys making a debut and other two very inexperienced.

We've to get rid of that system. Its not working.

Moyes was shite appointment from the beginning. He was never up to par. LvG is different case tho, he has the credentials of managing top sides. He needs time. Being out of the Mickey Mouse cup makes no difference whatsoever.

Can we really afford to go around treating it as the Mickey Mouse cup these days?

Personally, given that we have no European commitments, i'd have liked to see LvG field a stronger side. Maybe not full strength, but at least two or three of Rooney/Mata/RvP/Cleverley/Fletcher/Young/Jones in the mix, or even on the bench.

Winning breeds confidence, and a win tonight - as well as a good cup run in general - would create a bit of buzz about the place. As much among the supporters as anything.

Maybe LvG didn't want to risk any more injuries, and is prioritising the league. And I can understand that. But like I said . . . are we really in a position to be disrespecting any chance of a trophy at this moment in time, especially when we have relatively few games to play this season?

We should be freaking expecting 4th at least, another season withouth CL would be devastating.
The squad is a shambles. We have 3/4 of a very good first team but absolute shite after that.
I'm more than willing to have another average season as i believe Van Gaal will get it right but if the club wants us to get top 4 this season then they will simply have to get their checkbook out a few more times before the transfer window shuts.

I thought he valued systems and playing players in position? He even took Van Persie off for Huntelaar in the world cup, yet his solution here seems to be to throw as many strikers on as possible and sacrificing any shape we had - pretty much Moyes' go to last season.

'Atleast we created a lot of chances'

Come onnnn. Please.

Once we shift the players he wants out, get a proper DM in, and can actually play our first team we will be dynamite, every confidence still.

LVG saying how we created a lot of chances in the 2nd half.

I think he's failed to realise that most of these came at 3 and then 4 nil down.

LVG is showing a lot of faith in employing players ( lots of players, simultaneously ) out of position. Going forward, here's hoping we play a 433 made up of players in their ACTUAL positions.

LVG said in an interview (the one where he dropped ADM's name), that he was playing 3-5-2 because he didn't have a top class winger like Ronaldo or Di Maria, to play a 4-3-3. But now he does, so presumably we will switch to that. Presumably......

He's also said many times that the players are more used to a 4-3-3. So if the dreadful start to the season and this disgraceful person doesn't expedite that (especially in the wake of the ADM signing) then I am at a loss. It's also the formation that LVG has had his teams play the majority of his career, and one he has openly stated is his favourite.

Van Gaal won't know who half of our squad/reserve/youth players are, literally. People like Giggs needs to shoulder a lot of the blame as well.

Cant believe the team he put out. The confidence in the club is not exactly good yet he plays all theses youngsters against a team that treated the game like a Cup Final.
Basically he hung those youngsters out to dry.
If the club were in Europe I could understand but this is total humiliation.

Individual errors did us in but keeping Chicharito on for the ninety minutes at the expense of an form of midfield control was beyond idiotic. The formation he is implementing here will take ages to succeed, time we do not have and offensively I have doubts about it. We simply aren't creating enough in the three games we have played do far.

So far he has been a shambles, if it was Moyes we would be raging here. But I hope he can turn it around

He needs to use the technical areas. Forget pre-planned tactics. This isn't international football where you have the wealth of a full bench to use.

Giggs and the rest of the coaching staff look like they're doing their homework on the bench rather than taking action.

Especially with young players who need direction. Wenger is the best at getting results with kids on the pitch. He is active on the touchline.

The sort of quote David Moyes would get battered for making.

Must have been watching a different game, we weren't even second best all over the park tonight.

I've never hated a word more in my life than philosophy.

He really said that? Embarassing.

Why can't manager just be honest and blame the players for once, or at least himself.

After the first question on 'you + Manchester United set the highest standard. Did the performance from the players fall short' - he answered saying we made errors at important times but then said 'But we made a lot of chances in the second half. Atleast we made a lot of chances.'

Can we sign some genuine world class center back talent please? CM as well.

No joke, the same thing used to happen under Moyes. I thought Moyes was trying to placate the fans and feign bravado when he'd swap out a defender for a striker but now LVG is doing the same. There are big problems at United big, big problems.

Doesn't have that same confidence that he had before the Swansea match, I think he's learnt a harsh lesson of English football tonight

These guys finished 10th in League 1 last season for feck sake. Only Janko and James have not played at Championship level or higher.

Coventry, Southend few years back??. The scoreline may be worse off and embarassing , but its same as those results, just a day where nothing went right.
In the context of 12 months of poor results this isn't just a case of nothing going right on the day.

Well we're 3 games into the season and it's clear pre-season wasn't a worthwhile barometer. Jumping up and down isn't going to get anything done any quicker.

Steve Claridge on BBC:

"Louis van Gaal contributed by playing people out of position and a system that didn't suit them. They didn't know what they were doing, didn't know what they're playing. The players aren't that bad but they don't understand the system they're playing in."

Fergie used to play 6 strikers, Berbatov and Park in midfield with some random teenager at center back in some of these games and we got on fine. This is a bad excuse.
