Uhm, why would a world class winger start as a 6?

Maybe a 4-3-3... or really a 4-1-3-2... like this

-----------Herrera----------
Januzaj-------------Di Maria
-----------Mata------------
-------RvP----Rooney------

Obviously a bit offensive in nature but that might be how you sort that set of players... just a thought.

Oh god we would get ripped apart!

I wish people would stop using numbers to describe positions. They really aren't used anymore.

Have to play a guy that good in his favorite position.

Young Herrera MF Shaw
Rooney
di Maria van Persie
Or
MF
Herrera Mata
Januzaj van Persie di Maria

No since the LA Galaxy match I havent seen a through ball, oke since rome Mata gave one to Welbeck, but I watched the Adnan video vs Swansea and havent seen the through ball you're talking of.

So we played no through balls or attempted through balls in that match? or any match? ok.

If that's true (which it isn't and I was at the match) then don't you think we should have that in our armoury instead of playing slowly in front of the opposition all the time? Herrera for one threaded balls through all the time at Bilbao. And we know Carrick can do the same. Would someone with real pace not be handy to get onto them/press the defender/spring the offside/attack with speed on the break? Now that is something we haven't enough of for a while.

Not against Swansea - he gave them problems when he had the ball at his feet but running onto through balls he didn't quite have enough pace. But I take the point about his exceptional close control meaning his overall speed with the ball is a nightmare for most defenders.
Dont know what you are talking about but Im referring to this part; Which through ball was given against Swansea when Januzaj came short? I havent seen it.

Its retarded we cant fit out record signing 37m pound mata into any of our fantasy formations

Citeh's 4-4-2?

---Rooney-------RVP---------
Di Maria------------Mata----
----------Herrera------------
-----------DM----------------
Shaw-------------------Rafael
------Rojo-----Evans--------
----------De Gea------------

With:
Rooney/RVP/Welbeck/Hernandez as Aguero/Dzeko/Negredo/Jovetic, strikers coming deep and wide at times but basically free to attack
Di Maria as Nasri/Milner/Navas, providing width and running, especially the latter 2
Mata as Silva, tucking in and providing creativity
Herrera as Yaya, running around and linking play
New DM/Fletcher/Carrick as Fernandinho/Fernando, covering for the more aggresive CM, keep things ticking

Rest is self-explanatory, although we obviously lack a Kompany level CB, but then so do they whenever he goes off the boil or is injured.

It's not perfect, but it basically makes sense. Di Maria thrived as the 3rd most defensive player in Real's front 6 and would have a similar role here. Mata would have 2 strikers and 4 quick players making runs forward in Herrera, Di Maria, Shaw and Rafael. We'd concede a fair few but surely score a bunch, too.

Some thoughts...

Di Maria would be a great signing, purely because he is a top player!

But he wouldn't slot into the team without ruffling a few feathers, and one of Rooney/Mata/RVP would have to be sacrificed.

The newly signed Rojo suggests the 532 is here to stay, yet the signing of Di Maria would suggest 433...so it is not a perfect match.

Luckily United have a top manager this season and i'd hope an overall plan for the team has been discussed before any huge bids are placed.

Not a bad idea... might be something there.

I'm intensely relaxed about the club spending huge money for proven top quality players. This is exactly the kind of transfer we should be making. That being said, this has PSG written all over it.

De Gea
Rafael-Evans-Rojo-Shaw
Vidal-Herrera
Welbeck-Mata-ADM
Rooney
Rooney, Mata and RVP rotate for the AM/ST positions, Welbeck, ADM, Januzaj and Young(rarely) for the wings. We don't need to shoehorn RVP/Rooney into every team. We may well be better without one of them.

Dont know what you are talking about but Im referring to this part; Which through ball was given against Swansea when Januzaj came short? I havent seen it.

Just check him out against their right back. A couple of times a through ball and/or a loose ball went went down the right and in a straight race the defender just had the edge.

Whether it was a through ball or a mishit the point is he didn't have enough pace to get there first.

Not that I'm too fussed about this transfer, but surely Real would rather sell now, than loan him out & then 'maybe' get the transfer fee next summer.

And although United have been linked with a move for Real Madrid’s £45m-rated winger Angel Di Maria will not go away, sources within the club have insisted the player is not on van Gaal’s radar.

From DiscoMirror (David Mcdonnell)

I just 2 minutes ago saw a re-run of United in Press from today where McDonnell says he thinks Woodward might need or want to deliver a marquee signing, like a Di Maria type to excite everyone.

I was just trying to use the players he suggested in slightly more logical positions.

Funny, I coach at a football academy and we use them all the time :).
Fair enough. I meant more at professional level though and by analysts, pundits, etc, you don't really here them used. Probably because at the top levels of the game positions become more hybrid and managers aren't playing their players in as many traditional positions as the game is evolving.

Where is this Sky report from yesterday saying VG has told Ed to go all out for him? Can't find anything of that sort on their website.

It'll just be them referring to reports from other places.

Although I like the fact Woodward wants to get us excited together with Di Maria we need a CM.

For me, a midfield of Carrick with Herrera and Di Maria on either side of him would be a brilliantly balanced midfield. It'd be great.

Feck it, lets go all 4-4-2 Nev style.

-------------DDG---------------
Rafael---Smalling--Rojo---Shaw--
Di Maria-Herrera---Mata---Januzaj
-------Rooney--RVP--------------
