Man United appoint Moyes | Round, Woods, Lumsden, P Neville in; Giggs player/coach; Albert stays

Just pointing out:

Jose Mourinho
Pep Guardiola
Roberto Di Matteo
Frank Riijkard

All managers who had almost no european experience that went on to win european trophies in their first couple of years. combined, it took this 4 six years to have won 4 champions league titles, and a uefa cup.

Welcome to Manchester United, David Moyes!

Not my first choice but like Ferguson's campaign he knows what is best and so do the board and the club. Happy to get behind him and I sincerely hope he does well.

Huge test for the man.

That's not the point. Were you happy when we bought him to replace Ronaldo?

And 'brilliant' is too far stretch to describe Valencia. Even at his short-period of peak, people could see he's a limited player, and in no way would be able to reach Ronaldo's level. Don't you think so?

We didn't buy him to 'replace' Ronaldo though. Transfers aren't substitutions in a match.

3 years from now he will either be on the verge of sack or a legend in the making. Big task. He has my full support.

Bloody hell, had to listen hard enough when Fergie spoke but understanding Moyes will be a tough task for our foreign players.

Hope to god, they are our new physios.

It's been a surreal couple of days hasn't it ? Sir Alex to go was a huge shock and one which had me stuck to the telly all day and Moyes in today.Wow.From utter devastation yesterday to quite optimistic now and looking forward to the new season already.Best of luck Moyesie, here's to the first trophy.

I'm pretty disappointed on a whole number of levels that I can't be arsed to type out but feck it. Huge times ahead of us and looking forward to the ride.

Hope he gets off to a good start.

There's just no comparison between Ronaldo leaving and Fergie leaving. Replacing a player is totally different from replacing a manger. There's over 20 players in a squad, each has to take responsibility to contribute more when a big player leaves, as well as the new signings. We had 80 million to spend on improving the squad, the fact we bought Valencia as our new winger wasn't the problem, the problem was he was our only signing of quality that summer (unless we're counting Owen on a free, but I don't see why you would). We had weaker areas in the team we had a chance to fix and could have had a team as good 08-09 but we didn't invest the money, that was the disappointment.

With a manager it's just a straight up swap.

United made a smart decision not trying to appoint Mourinho, good luck Moyes.
 You said you hoped he stayed on at your club the other week, done a complete u-turn because he criticised the media darling that is Casillas.

Its all happened so fast. Too much to compute in such a short time! Whether we like it or not, David Moyes IS the manager of Manchester United. Not my preferred choice but in SAF I have always trusted and Im not going to stop now in his most important decision ever!

As Moses said in an earlier brilliant post is that SAF is the new 'director of football' .... Moyes job description will not be what SAFs was. I think SAF has enacted this because he knows just how impossible it is for anybody to take over from him and would require his support.

For SAF to remain influential at the club, he needed a team manager who was willing to go with that arrangement for the first few years. In that context, Mourinho is clearly not suitable and Moyes is an almost perfect fit.

When I think about it like, I both understand the thinking behind this set up and actually quite like it. Both men think alike, have similar work ethics and personalities and critically the junior is willing to learn from the senior.

Moyes has phenomenal Premier League experience, knows the circuit, teams, managers and players and so will have ample personal experience to fall back. Combined with inputs from SAF as well as his senior staff, we probably get an even better view on how to tackle domestic opponents.

Likewise, whilst the ECL may be a new adventure for him, the club he inherits has better experience of this competition than anybody else. And in his first year, Im sure he will constantly tap into SAF for views on strategy and tactics.

After a few years, once he has signed a few of his own players and hopefully got a few trophies of his own in the bank, SAF can easily blend into the background with Moyes fully set.

Succession planning has always been central to SAF evolution of his squads. The more I think about it, thats EXACTLY what it has constructed here. Given we know about SAF does what he thinks is best for the club and normally achieving what he sets out to, well, Im sure he will successfully apply his energies to this one final task his has given himself at Manchester United. If he and Moyes can pull it off, then the benefits of 'continuity' could be profound.

Hmm, finally after 48 very turbulent hours, I feel slightly more optimistic.

BTW: Welcome David Moyes!

Yes he is a officially a director on the board .... but Moses wrote that in effect SAF will be the de facto 'director of football'. I agree with him.

I see what you mean. I'm sure he'll still have a big impact if he wants to, as a director of football would. The only difference will probably be that he doesn't get involved with transfers and identifying targets, as they generally do.

Time to get behind the new manager, he may not be everyone choice but he is hopefully up to the job. He has SAF and united's backing so that is good enough for me.

The 6 year contract imply that we are going to give him the time to settle and are not looking for instant results which is promising as we really do want to avoid joining the manager merry go round.

I hope he gets rid of that track suit of his and wears a proper suit for games.

 You said you hoped he stayed on at your club the other week, done a complete u-turn because he criticised the media darling that is Casillas.

To be fair, everything Mourinho did over the last week completely marked him out as the wrong chap for us:

- Stressed Casillas would remain a sub (he has the right to do that) and lamented not signing López earlier (under the belt)

- Pepe says something supportive of Casillas and his past contributions to Real deserving better

- Mourinho tells the press Pepe's problem is he is out of sorts after being run over/outclassed by a 19-year-old (Varane)

- With him having said before he would go somewhere where he felt loved, having alienated everyone (inc. Ronaldo) and the situation untenable, the media ask whether he was considering an offer from Chelsea (everyone understanding it's a done deal).

- He sticks two fingers up at everyone saying all he has considered lately is staying on. i.e. "Pay up or put up with me you tossers".

Even a CL win wouldn't make up for us having to manage the transition to a new manager, with the same challenges as Moyes' today but augmented by the disarray he consistently leaves behind.

Wouldn't mind Neville as a coach, not sure there's any point in Weir, and hands off Meulensteen!

Have to give him unconditional support from the off. The more fan's treat this appointment with suspicion the more it's doomed to fail, get behind him and hopefully he'll settle and take to this job easily.

Our summer transfer activity will tell us alot about what Moyes can do in his first season as our squad as it is, is too weak for the challenges of next year.

Agree on the getting behind him part, but how exactly is our squad not strong enough to challenge next season. It just won the league by quite a margin, and while I'd expect both chelsea and City to lift their game next season We should easily still be strong enough to challenge again next season.

Eh? Explain?

Would be great to have Phil back as a coach, he knows his stuff. I really hope that Gary follows suit at some point too.

City and Chelsea will strengthen this Summer, with the likes of Jose coming in and a fair few signings to go along with it, we're not going to get away with cruising in the league.

Likewise in Europe, there will be big changes.. Bayern will further strengthen, Barca will sign some new players and Madrid will be more cohesive and united under a new manager. There's also the World Cup to look forward to, so everyone will be really up for the season ahead... our squad as it stands is not strong enough (not across the board criticism... just a few areas).. particularly on the wings and in midfield. Strengthen in these areas and we're equipped to challenge on all fronts with alot more gusto and quality.
