Its all happened so fast. Too much to compute in such a short time! Whether we like it or not, David Moyes IS the manager of Manchester United. Not my preferred choice but in SAF I have always trusted and Im not going to stop now in his most important decision ever!
As Moses said in an earlier brilliant post is that SAF is the new 'director of football' .... Moyes job description will not be what SAFs was. I think SAF has enacted this because he knows just how impossible it is for anybody to take over from him and would require his support.
For SAF to remain influential at the club, he needed a team manager who was willing to go with that arrangement for the first few years. In that context, Mourinho is clearly not suitable and Moyes is an almost perfect fit.
When I think about it like, I both understand the thinking behind this set up and actually quite like it. Both men think alike, have similar work ethics and personalities and critically the junior is willing to learn from the senior.
Moyes has phenomenal Premier League experience, knows the circuit, teams, managers and players and so will have ample personal experience to fall back. Combined with inputs from SAF as well as his senior staff, we probably get an even better view on how to tackle domestic opponents.
Likewise, whilst the ECL may be a new adventure for him, the club he inherits has better experience of this competition than anybody else. And in his first year, Im sure he will constantly tap into SAF for views on strategy and tactics.
After a few years, once he has signed a few of his own players and hopefully got a few trophies of his own in the bank, SAF can easily blend into the background with Moyes fully set.
Succession planning has always been central to SAF evolution of his squads. The more I think about it, thats EXACTLY what it has constructed here. Given we know about SAF does what he thinks is best for the club and normally achieving what he sets out to, well, Im sure he will successfully apply his energies to this one final task his has given himself at Manchester United. If he and Moyes can pull it off, then the benefits of 'continuity' could be profound.
Hmm, finally after 48 very turbulent hours, I feel slightly more optimistic.
BTW: Welcome David Moyes!
