Youth Reports

just read the local paper and it says that the Manchester United U21 team are going to Vietnam for a friendly at the end of this month. Is that true ? if so,what a great news, but feck... i'm in Sydney now :(

PHL Cup Semi

Won 2-1 vs. Shrewsbury Town. I wasn't there but sources at Hyde tell me that Bellion scored after 80 mins, they equalised on 82 before Richie Jones got the winner on 89 mins.

Boston or Sheff. Wed. away in the final.

On edit - SW beat Boston 1-0 tonight so Hillsborough it is for the final. SW are the holders, by the way.

I know that Lee was in goal. Other player were Collett, Jones, R, Bellion and Marsh.
Does anyone have more info?

Antwerp

I understand that Arthur Gomez scored 3 for the reserves last week and in the game before that.
It seems also that their first team is still in free fall.
Whom should we send to them next season?

What is the level of play that Royal Antwerp play at? Is it on par with the Championship or lower? If lower, then I don't see any need to send any players there as it doesn't seem that they will develop properly.

Chadwick was a success as well as Hickingbotham and Wallwork.

Okay I can be bothered/ don't have the time to read through all this. Can I suggest that a youth team forum might be an idea? If not can we have a new thread from the start of next season.

I have a couple of questions for the youth team experts.
1) David Jones - Box to box midfielder, should he be given a chance to see if he's the man to replace Keane from the end of next season.
2) Lee Martin - Left Winger? How long before he's ready to make a step up
3) Pique - Central Defender - When should he be looked at as a long term partner for Rio.

Jones is never going to replace Keane, he might replace Scholes though and is good enough defensively so we wont need 3 men in midfield

I didn't mean about the influence factor, i meant as the box to box midfielder, how his tackling ability?
Fine, but that means hell have to play next to a dm, not as a dm that Keane does these days.

So you don't think he could fill the role as a box to box player along side a sinlge, more attack minded player?

Only seen him play a couple of times, not really enough to guage him well enough. Sorry for all the questions

No, but that scenario is unusual, you dont see Gerrard, Lampard, Viera and others paired with attacking players, they all play with defensive midifielders (Hamann, Makalele, Silva).

That's true, never thought about it like that.

Anyway, when do you think he will be ready for a step up?

Hes been ready for a year, its said hes too small, but if your good enough it does not matter. He should play next to Keane in the next league game and allowed to sink or swim, its the only way to tell if hes good enough.

Jones still has a teenagers body, but is the closest reserve team player to the first team. I really think he should be given a chance next season to show what he can do as he has been the best reserve team player for the last couple of seasons.

Martin, left wing, probably wont see him for the next couple of seasons but he is very talented, may go on loan the season after next. Got high hopes for him.

Pique, very classy defender, similar to Rio, also wont see him for the next couple of seasons. Spector is ahead of him.

Looking Busy said:
If Martin can develop and will be ready in a couple of years then we have an ideal replacement for Giggs, who at 31 probably only has 2 years left in his legs.

That would be ideal but if I remember correctly Martin is 17 right now, and I wouldnt expect him to make the first team other than a league cup match or meaningless CL match before he is 20 unless he really does progress quickly.

This further proves my point about the fact we have to remember that we support a club built on a string youth tradition, maybe it's about time we remembered that and stopped panic buying

Well done lads.

Im pissed off that MUTV arnt showing the reserve match vs Bolton tommorow though. No idea why not.

An(twerps) news

It's sad down at the Bosuil stadium. Despite the return of coach Regi Van Acker, who was in charge when Higginbotham, O'Shea and Wallwork were over in Belgium, it's all doom and gloom.

Dong gets the occasional hour but never scores and Archie Gomez gets even less playing time. Gomez did score a hat-trick for the reserves last week but that's it for good news. Antwerp (pre-season favourites for promotion) have won one of their last ten games and they will probably not even make the division 2 play-offs. Oh dear!

:( well thats not good news at all

but congrats to the lads on the pontins win now on to the reserve leage and the 2 cups :D this is what really matters ;) after all children are the future :D

where did you hear that the game isn´t on MUTV i thought i heard steve talking about it being live lastnight on talk of the devils

On the news they said that they wouldnt be showing it live, instead they are showing highlights of the Blackpool game and then they will show highlights of the Bolton game on Friday I think. No idea why though.

And what a let-down too, our reserves thrash Bolton 5-0. Lee Martin grabbed a hat-trick and the other 2 goals came from Rossi and Heath.

For the staticians

Does anyone have the subs, used and/or unused for the Bolton game.
No Bellion? A place on the bench on Sunday?

United hammer reserves
By Mark Heys

[font=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Bolton reserves suffered their heaviest defeat of the season last night as arch rivals Manchester United swept them away in the FA Premier Reserve League game at Altrincham.

A hat-trick from Lee Martin, as well as further goals from Colin Heath and Giuseppe Rossi, condemned Neil McDonald's young Wanderers side to a 5-0 loss and extended the recent losing streak to three games.

United in contrast, now look to tie up the FA Premier Reserve league title in their remaining two games as they look to pull away from city rivals Manchester City who are hot on their tails in second place.

Wanderers went in at half time just a goal down as Martin had earlier lashed in a shot on the half hour mark which gave goalkeeper Chris Howarth no chance at all, but the second half was a different tale with goals coming thick and fast.

On 54 minutes former Antwerp loanee Colin Heath converted United's second after some good build up play from midfielder Richard Jones. Martin then helped himself to a second and United's third with yet another fine finish mid way through the half.

His hatrick was complete in the closing minutes of the game as he netted from close range after the Wanderers defence had failed to clear their lines and with just three minutes remaining Rossi added the fifth and final goal to put the nail in the Bolton coffin.

Reserves manager Neil McDonald will be hoping to restore some pride in the remaining games against Sunderland, Wolves and Everton.

Bolton Reserves:Chris Howarth, Rhys Powell, Bradley Hill, Charlie Comyn-Platt, Jason Talbot, Dale Whitehead, Luke Magill, Reda Kribib, James Sinclair, Bedi Buval, Karl Luisi

United Reserves: Tom Heaton, Paul McShane, Adam Eckersley, Gerard Pique, Jonathan Spector, David Fox, Richard Jones, David Jones, Colin Heath, Guiseppe Rossi, Lee Martin.

No Bellion? A place on the bench on Sunday?

Picken came on for Spector, Bardsley came on for Eckersley and Marsh came on for R. Jones (I think it was Jones, not sure).

Tommy Lee was an unused sub, dont know who the last sub was.

Bellion not involved at all, I think he is in the squad for Sunday.

fergie not happy with the academy

From manutd.com

Retirement Of Academy Chief Sparks Restructure

Manchester United’s celebrated Academy is to be reorganised, following the decision by Academy Manager Les Kershaw to retire on reaching 65 at the end of next season.

Former United striker and current under 18s coach Brian McClair, will become Academy Manager Designate from July 2005, succeeding Les a year later. In the 2005/06 season, he will also coach the U15 and U16 teams.

United Chief Executive David Gill said: “I am delighted Brian has taken the chance to lead the Academy. Discovering new talent has always been a priority for Manchester United. Brian has a long and successful association with the Club and he will bring great enthusiasm and drive to the job.

“Les has been a fine manager and has overseen the youth system at a time of great change. His ability and knowledge have been huge assets for us and he will be sorely missed when he finally retires in July 2006, for his work and his infectious character.”

Other changes at the Academy include:
• Paul McGuinness will become the Assistant Academy Manager for 17-21 year olds with specific responsibility for coaching the U18 and Youth Team.
• Tony Whelan is to be the Assistant Academy Manager for 9-16 year olds and the Head Coach for the U11 and U12.
• Mark Dempsey will be the Head Coach for the U13 to U16.
• Eamon Mulvey will be the Head Coach for the U9 and U10.
• Eric Harrison has retired as a consultant to the schoolboy section of the Academy.
• Francisco Filho will leave the Academy at the end of his current contract.

Does that mean that they are not happy with the Filiho experiance?

Filho

I've not been overly happy with Filho experience. The exit versus Stoke City in the Youth Cup is going to continue to piss me off every time that I think of it or him. He messed with the formation playing with 3 centre-backs when they had been playing well with a 4-4-2. Most mistifying of all was his decision to start with Puustinen instead of Campbell. Unforgiveable for me.

Today, the U-18's beat Derby County 2-1 at Carrington. Darron Gibson with a well-placed header and Aaron Burns with a calm left foot finish (after Kyle Moran and others had tried their hardest to squander a great opportunity) put United 2-0 up early in the second half. The visitors pulled one back with 20 minutes to go but United held on. Partial thanks to the ref who only played 43 minutes in the second half!!

That was the final home game of the season, United wrap up the campaign with a visit to Huddersfield next Saturday. Subsequently they travel to Zurich for the Blue Stars tournament in May.

Do you know the team and subs?
Anyway thanks alot for the info :)

Great for Burns to score his first goal this season at last.

Thanks :-)

Brilliant, did you see the game? Do you know anything about the u-16 game?
I understand that Blackburn will play on Wed. and can rap it up than because of their goal diff.

I was there! The U-16s were on the other pitch, not certain of the score although they certainly scored 1 goal as I heard and saw the celebrations. Not certain of the line-up, had a little look but it was from 100 yards away. Ben Amos was in goal, Richard Eckersley played as did Fabian Brandy. Can't offer anymore than that.

As for the league - this looks pretty conclusive. BRFC didn't play today and are away at Wolves on Wed. then Sheff Utd next weekend then Forest at home the week after. Any 3 points will be good enough for them.
