Your top 3 "excitement" signings

Wayne Rooney - Just felt like we had someone very very special and I couldn't wait to see it unfold.
Nani and Anderson - I was a transfer muppet back then. Remember getting in from the pub and checking the freeview teletext on Sky Sports News and it was the main headline. Double swoop. Couldn't believe it.
Mata - It's close between him and RVP. He snatches it because I just feel he is more of a case of what we need rather than the pure luxury that RVP was.

Tevez Larson and Anderson for me. Obviously including loans

Mata
Van Persie
De Gea

I wasn't as big of a transfer Mata when Rooney signed (I was only 10 to be fair), and football manager taught me all I needed to know about De Gea a few years before, and after all I read I wanted him badly to replace VDS. Was convinced he'd become one of the world's best. Mata and RVP are both obviously world class players from big teams, but Mata is more necessary then RVP was so he gets first IMO.

to name 3 is pretty hard, i have some good list here, mainly ruud, veron, ferdinand, ronaldo, rooney, tevez, anderson & nani, hagreaves(yeah, i thought he was going to be great for us back then), berbatov, de gea and rvp. mata is definitely part of this group.

it is easier to name 3 most unexciting though.

1. alan smith- somehow back then i wasn't that impressed that we went for smith. not good enough to be a regular goalscorer imo. first few games he was excellent for us though, we've got no striker fit at that moment and he kind of carried us, for about 3 months or so.

2. fellaini - sorry but he is on my list. not sure he will be good for us. hope he can prove me wrong.

3. owen - we just sold ronaldo, and a post peak michael owen took the number 7 jersey.

i excluded players like djemba, miller, bellion, obertan simply because they were virtually unknowns when we signed them. so there were not much feeling or expectation into it,

In terms of what I thought at the time rather than how they turned out......

1 - Robson - Everybody just knew.
2 - Webb - Throwing a curve ball in here but at the time he was a top player.
3 - Cole - I remember watching the news break in the pub and it was huge.

RVP has to be there too - Title gone to City albeit fine margins. I questioned the longevity but it was pretty clear Fergie wanted the title back. It was a sledgehammer to crack a nut transfer that made me realise Fergie was probably calling it a day.

Hughes coming back was special and I was really chuffed when we got Brian McClair

Kewell is a good shout, was really happy when we signed him. I wasn't that excited about Suarez though.

Edited it to Ryan Babel who i initially forgot about. Was incredibly excited on the back of his performances at the u21 euros and the Henry comparisons.

So far they've managed a combined 13 years, 400 appearances and 15 major winners medals at the club. They've not exactly been flops...

Djimi Traore has a Champions League winners medal. Just saying like...

1) Rooney, most definitely. I remember the internet was down all day (fecking provider fecked something up) so I had to keep checking teletext

2) The most beautiful man of all time, Juan Mata. It's been a long time since I was so excited about a transfer.

3) A few are tied for third place: Ferdinand (I wanted him desperately at the time), Nani and Anderson (we signed two of Europe's hottest youngsters after an exciting season during which we played great football) and, feck me sideways, I was excited about Carrick. I really wanted him very much. I still remember where I was when we got him.

I can't remember the RvN and Veron transfers. I mean I remember them happening but at that time I wasn't that excited. Which is weird as I went full muppet a year later for Rio.

1. Rio Ferdinand - I waited for ages for that one
2. I'd like to put Hargreaves, Nani+Anderson and Tevez in one. What a summer that was! Incredible that in the end no one worked out for us, bar Nani. Sort of.
3. Robin van Persie - Arsenal

Edit: feck, I forgot Rooney! He'd be in there somewhere..

Going on players I just felt would be big additions, though I wasn't always right!

1. Keane
2. Hughes
3. RVN

There were others though. Sheringham, Davenport!, Irwin, Stam, Vidic, Yorke and more I'm forgetting right now.

Andy Cole in about 95 stands out.

We were kids at school, changing after hockey, and the teacher rolled in saying "United have just signed Andy Cole", to a chorus of people calling BS. He was smashing the goals in for Newcastle right near the league summit, so looked impossible

Obviously back then no one had mobiles, let alone all the info at their finger tips, so it wasn't until seeing Teletext that night we found out it was true.

My memories arent as beautiful as yours. I was very young back then and my united guru was my older cousin who was literally pissed off that we spent 7m + gillespie for him. He rated gillespie alot

Remember Keegan explaining it to 1000s of fans, all congregated?

1. chevrolet
2. dhl
3. bwin

Yeah, but what about Mister Potato, the official "Savoury Snack Partner" of Manchester United

Or what about Hong Kong Jockey, who, evidently, are simply listed as an "Official Partner of Manchester United." Good ole Ed can swing a deal or two, but his team is a bit sit at shrouding these excessive partnership deals with clever monikers.

Sparky coming back from Barca, couldn't believe we'd ever sold him in the first place so was delighted when Fergie brought him home.

Eric joining us from Leeds as it was completely out of the blue, I'd been distraught the year before when Leeds signed him as I was living in France at the time and reckoned he might stuff up our league challenge that year.

Taking Cole from Newcastle was another real surprise, was labouring on a building site thick with snow when the news came on talk sport that United had just signed Cole bringing the whole site to a halt.

Tevez- Was so deep in that thread and so wanted that!!
Veron- Couldn't believe we were signing WC int talent!!
Mata- We needed some good news and fresh blood!!

Berbatov - I honestly thought he would be the missing piece in the puzzle that elevated as to another gear. The previous season at Tottenham he was having a stormer - one game Spurs were down to ten men against Bolton but Berbatov inspired them to a 4-1 win. Seemingly had it all - finishing, first touch, vision, link up play. I was a huge fan of Tevez but I thought at the time Betbatov would make us near invincible.

Rooney - Considering it was the back of Euro 2004 and we had just sold Beckham a year ago and had an underwhelming season, I thought he was a pivotal signing. Brought back some life into the Utd team - I think 04-05 we had a line up of Ronaldo, Keane, Scholes, Giggs, RvN and Rooney. Of course some of those players were past their peak/ off form but it was a massive signing which regalvanized our team.

RvP - Sign the best player in the league from your rivals. Might've been 29 when we bought him but I couldn't contain the excitement. It's like a similar feeling to when we purchased berbatov - RvP was so complete and skillful but also proven at the highest level which you couldn't say about Berbatov before he came here.

Definitely Andy Cole, that was just a properly mental signing...

Second would be RVP, third Mata.

Cole - total shock as he was a goal machine, best finisher in the league and you normally can't buy that.

Rooney - so much talent, so much promise, excited mucho  Took my lad to his debut, that hatrick that slide to the corner flag.

Mata - the end of a barren spell in regards to signing the best players and the lift we need at the perfect time, let's hope he hits the ground running.

De Gea - The uncertainty of it all, replacing our trusty veteran with one of the hottest prospects in football who still had many question marks over his head.
Kagawa - I thought we were going to become some sort of Barca lite. How wrong I was. :(
RVP - RVP.

I would put Ronaldo in there, but I wasn't such a muppet at that age. What really builds up the excitement is following the transfer for days on end, and one couldn't really do that back in the day. It just sort of 'happened'.
