Your top 3 "excitement" signings

1. Juan Sebastian Veron - He was one of the best in the world at Lazio. Bear in mind this is before twitter or any live transfer updates, so us signing one of the best midfielders out of the blue was crazy.

It stands out for me as well, as it was a pretty rare case in which was sign a real star at his prime, but out of the blue? It dragged on for weeks, starting with the trial he had in Italy for having a fake passport of something, which could have killed any possible move.

email received ay 9.50 from United saying Mata has officially signed.

That's the first time that's happened!

  • Keane ... clearly the best player in the league
  • Ferdinand ... clearly the best defender in the league
  • van Cuntie ... clearly the biggest disloyal cuntbag in the league.

I left out Rooney because at the time, I thought he was more of a player for the future, I was excited, really excited but not as excites as when we signed;

1. Andy Cole
2. RVP
3. Juan Veron

I can't say I'm excited about signing Mata, more dumbstruck, I'll be more excited in a day or two and he could well end up being a more important signing than both Coley and RVP.

RvN top for me as he was my favourite player outside United at the time
Ole because of the nationality
Rooney - stuck in Nice with no internet and constantly found myself at Internet Cafes to ge the latest updates

Andy Cole, Veron and Henrik Larsson were probably the three times I've been most excited about signings.

In fairness though we are so lucky to support a club that can make such amazing signings as Keane, Cantona, Ferdinand, RvN etc

Of the most recent signings, I would say

RVP
Tevez
Anderson

I would also add Hargreaves. He was a Canadian playing for United, it was exciting and I really liked his style of play, even though he wasn't the most popular signing

That whole 2007 window was great. The picture of Carlos right after meeting officials in Portgual about Nani and Anderson was great. Shirt slightly unbuttoned, sly smile, looking like he had just got a quick bj from some slag

And then right after Torres signed for Liverpool, and after Tevez' move to Inter was rejected, we stole their thunder with the signing of Judas and completed our second Holy Trinity

1. Veron. He's the best CM/playmaker in the world at that time. And he's coming to United from Serie A, the strongest league in the world. It's like us signing Iniesta nowadays.

2. Rooney. Following his explode performance in the WC, we signed the most exciting youngster in the world. He was a beast with brute strength for his age, adding to his good dribbling skill and excellent long shot.

3. Mata. We finally have that no. 10 with magic in his feet. Just an incredible signing, whatever side you're looking from.

4 & 5 are RvP and Hargreaves (thought we finally signed a proper world class DM/box to box who we'd never had after Keano left).

1. Fernando Torres
2. John Barnes
3. Peter Beardsley
I remember when you signed him. I was in a room with 2 other United fans, a Chelsea fan and an Arsenal fan and we all stood there looking at the TV thinking "Shit..! Liverpool are serious now!" Couldn't believe how they pulled it off.

It's a bit of a shame how he has declined so rapidly from his very best (although not for you I imagine)

1. John Barnes without a shadow of doubt
2. Markus Babbel - he just oozed awesome
3. Torres

Didn't have the prestige of Iniesta, surely...I recall hype, but I think you're remembering him as a bigger name than he was. I'd say it's a bit like us signing Mata really, a big name but not a global superstar.

Also, best CM/playmaker in the world at the time? Paul Scholes wants to know if you can pass that crack pipe...;)

Barnes signing was incredible. I remember watching him for Watford the season before he signed for us and when I heard he signed just thinking "what a player we've got on our hands."

1) RVP
2) Mata
3) Rooney

Never wanted Berbatov despite that hilarious shot of him at midnight. Nani & Anderson started the youtube era.

My scouse supporting brother had a bit of a meltdown when you got Riedle

I have to admit, at the time, I was disappointed we chose Andy Cole over Stan Collymore who we were also linked with at the time....thought Stanley was a more 'complete' player!!

1) Wayne Rooney - This was the biggest for me. The brightest English football prospect since Paul Scholes they said. I think we all expected Rooney to be and become our talisman for years to come. His debut did little to dampen the excitement.
2) Juan Mata - For me, this one is second only to Rooney, thats how much I rate him. Everything about the signing just feels right (even though I still struggle to visualise him playing for us). It is a big win for all parties concerned - the team, the management/CEO, the players (minus Kagawa) and the fans. I could go on for a while on this but ill leave it there.

I cant think of an obvious contender for #3 - there are several; Nani/Anderson, RVP and Kagawa are probably the main ones. My memory doesnt go back far enough to recall my reaction to signings like Cantona

For me, Berbatov and Ronaldo were not excitement signings. I wasnt convinced that Berbatov would cut it here, and had never heard of Ronaldo. I dont remember much of the Rio signing, which says it all really.

Yeah, he lacked the prestige as one of all time best in Iniesta. I was just saying, his status at that time is equal to Iniesta as the undisputed best playmaker. There were Zidane and Nedved, but they were more attacking. Scholes somehow didn't have the prestige of Veron, although it's all subjective though.

About Mata, I can think a few names who are more high profile than him as attacking playmaker: Silva, Fabregas, Ozil, Ribbery. So I don't think it's comparable to us signing Veron.

1. Roy Keane - there was just a feeling that he was the missing piece of the jigsaw and would become something very special at utd
2. Wayne rooney - the best young player to come out of england since gazza and he was immence at times before joining us
3. Ruud van nistelrooy/ van persie - both these genius' s generated a feeling that we had just signed the new van basten when they joined and both made huge impacts

Rooney
Andrew cole
Cantona

(Surprisingly all signings from English clubs)

Runners up

Nani &anderson
Tevez
Ruud

If we aren't counting Mata (I would have him in my top 3 for sure):

Solskjær (I'm Norwegian, I didn't really have a choice in the matter).
Ruud van Nistelrooy (great striker, and I've always been fond of the Netherlands).
Wayne Rooney

Actually, Nani would probably be close to that list as well. It wasn't the sort of transfer I was used to the club making, and it got me really excited. In hindsight he hasn't turned out to quite justify that excitement, but I'm still pleased with his contribution. Veron is another who would probably be up there somewhere. As is Ronaldo, obviously, although I never knew just how good he would turn out.

Cantona and Cole were ridiculous moments that came out of the blue and felt utterly surreal. The back pages of the tabloids and teletext were the only real rumour mill at that time.

RVP and Mata have been somewhat dulled by the constant back and forth from journos, "ITKs" and wind up merchants but are still pretty bloody shocking.

Juan Sebastien Veron - The Little Witch was a world class talent, just a pity we couldn't seem to accommodate him. We would have built a team around him if it wasn't for the Ginger Prince.

Wayne Rooney - So excited at the time, especially after that goal against Le Arse.

RVN - Waiting built up the tension and excitement.

Cantona
Cole
Veron

Was only about 13 when cantona signed but I 100% knew how big and important that moment was.

Cole remains the most of the blue big transfer I can ever recall

Veron Felt like one of the few times we ever went for a fully fledged world class superstar. He bombed so badly it still pisses me off.
