Every now and then a potential signing comes along that makes us want to orgasm. Mata, for me, is one. But looking back what are your 3 top exciting transfers?

For me number 1 was the Anderson + Nani double swoop. This on reflection wasn't great business at all, but at the time I thought we'd got the next Ronaldinho and the next Ronaldo.

1. Nani + Anderson
2. Wayne Rooney
3. Robin van Persie

Juan Mata would be very close.

Andy Cole in about 95 stands out.

We were kids at school, changing after hockey, and the teacher rolled in saying "United have just signed Andy Cole", to a chorus of people calling BS. He was smashing the goals in for Newcastle right near the league summit, so looked impossible

Obviously back then no one had mobiles, let alone all the info at their finger tips, so it wasn't until seeing Teletext that night we found out it was true.

1. Andy Cole easily
2. Robin van Persie
3. Juan Sebastian Veron

Rooney and Ronaldo were very exciting as well.

And yes, Mata would be close.

1. Juan Sebastian Veron - He was one of the best in the world at Lazio. Bear in mind this is before twitter or any live transfer updates, so us signing one of the best midfielders out of the blue was crazy. Just a shame we couldn't accommodate him, pity - he would have been PERFECT for us now :(

2. Robin van Persie - This was certainly the most shocking. Couldn't hold my excitement.

3. Dimitar Berbatov - I honestly thought he'd go on to be a new-age Cantona for us.

1- Cristiano Ronaldo - Easily
2- Rio Ferdinand - Remember waiting by the TV all day on the Sunday on which he signed
3- Berbatov - only other one that I can remember tbh

1. Ruud Gullit - take a look at our team at the time. He was old and probably gave half a feck but was stull awesome seeing him strutting his stuff.
2. Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink - The goalscorer I'd be waiting for since Kerry Dixon
3. Joe Cole - I rememeber hearing rumours of a ridiculously talented 14 year old in West Hams academy. Was really chuffed to get him.

I feel old.

Veron at the time was a massive one! That really captured the imagination. It is a shame that he isn't around as a 25 year old willing to join now. 1, because we could really use him now. 2, because we still had Scholes back then and weren't desperate for him then.

Berbatov was nuts too. I wasn't a Redcafe user then, but remember this place on that deadline day as a lurker. The fans were going mental. Again, shame that didn't work out either.

I loved it when we signed Andy Cole. Completely out of the blue. I remember seeing it on the news and being so excited. My favourite player growing up.

Rooney, Ronaldo and Mata. I was never excited about new player as I was when we bought Rooney.

RVN all day!!! Then followed by Veron... Great summer shit season lol

Rooney was a huge one. He was a wonderkid with extreme hype, and was already getting England caps.
I laugh when people say he hasn't hit his potential, having stacked the trophies, and caps, and been the key player here, second to only Ronaldo in recent memory.

I did like Ferdinand too. Only year I ever had names on my shirts was in the mid 2000s with Keane and Ferdinand.

1- Cristiano Ronaldo - Easily

I'm actually surprised by the Ronaldo one. I remember at the time I knew very little about him. I'd have thought when we signed an 18 year old Rooney a year later would have been more exciting.

I think because of technological advances such as twitter and such, I think the more recent ones are more exciting for me. RVP and Mata are definitely big ones for me. Being 20, I'm a bit too young for the Andy Cole, Cantona transfers etc - so I can't really recall how excited I got after we signed them.

But for me,

#1 Anderson and Nani
#2 Mata
#3 RVP

Berbatov and Ronaldo and Rooney are close ones to the top 3. Believe it or not, but so is Tevez's too.

Hernandez BFA, at 3 and younger I doubt those signings registered an ounce

Did the Nani and Anderson signings really excite that much at the time though? Not many had a clue who they were, just presumed talented youngsters. Nowhere the Rooney level where we knew exactly what we were getting.

1 - Rooney by an enormous distance. It was after his monster performance at the 2004 Euros and he was only 18. I was convinced he was going to be the best player ever and after that debut I only got even more spastic about him.

2 - Nanderson. Among the first transfers where YouTube videos were used to create huge amounts of hype, so I was raving about both of them, but Anderson in particular. When I saw that we'd landed both of them on the same day I couldn't believe it.

3 - Berbatov. The first transfer where I sat reading page after page of pure muppetry while lurking the Caf. It was incredible. One of our only truly memorable Deadline Day sagas.

Mata is 4th. If it had drawn out and reached Thiago- or Hazard-esque levels of muppetry he would probably be 2nd.

RVP is also a biggie. I had absolutely no faith in him joining us, and then suddenly he was sitting there and talking about his inner child. I was more dumbfounded than excited. Unreal signing. Maybe joint 4th with Mata, that one.

1. Rooney easily. At 18 he looked like an absolutely phenomenal talent, and then he kicks off with a sensational hat-trick to make it even more exciting.
2. Van Persie and Mata joint really, both top quality players that we've taken off one of our rivals.
3. Veron probably next as he was this Serie A supremo.

Rooney
Anderson/Nani
Mata

Omitted RVP, as I was one of those who thought we didn't really need him / signing him would hold back Welbeck and Hernandez. Was very glad to have been proven wrong.

1. Teddy Sheringham. I was 12 and had only seen him play for England where he was always prolific, was tickled pink when he came.
2. Andy Cole, again I was very young, but recall my dad's geordie mate being dismayed about all the goals he'd bring us.
3. RvP. Got him right at the top of his game, not been great thus far this season but unlucky with injury. Hopefully will remain prolific for at least another couple of seasons.

Not majorly excited about Mata, it just smells odd that Jose didn't put up more of a fight with regards to offloading him. I know it's weird that I was excited about Teddy and not so much Juan, don't get me wrong, clearly a quality player - I just hope he shines.

Agree completely, great player that just didn't click into our setup...although you know who would be more perfect for us now? Scholes in his prime circa 2001-2003. His creativity would fix a lot of our problems.

I thought more would say Tevez. It went on and on because of the ownership and West Ham's Icelandic owner said he wasn't for sale and the whole saga was weird.

I didn't really start paying much attention to the transfer window before 2008, so I've missed out on the Rooney excitement etc.

1. Kagawa
2. Mata
3. RVP

Kagawa was my favorite player for 1 and a half year before we signed him, and I watched him play almost weekly. To me, that was like a muppet dream come true, and it will probably never happen again, mainly because I'm not a hardcore transfer muppet. It might change when Japan becomes a powerhouse and tons of talents start flying to Europe every summer and winter.

Mata speaks for itself. A young, world class, PL proven offensive playmaker: what's not to love? Surely he'll make us play some nice football again!

RVP. Because it's RVP. And we stole him from Arsenal:lol:

Berbatov - first time I got truly gripped by transfers etc and was watching ssn all day waiting for him to be announced.

RVP - Again, signing a player of that magnitude was exciting.

Mata - feck me I'm excited.

I suppose these transfers coincide with me using forums etc

I just remember thinking about his performance against us a few weeks earlier and being really excited about signing a player with that potential

Easy to write off signings after a number of years but both Nani and Anderson contributed at a time both were very young and part of the best team in the world. Might have deteriorated with Anderson and been patchy with Nani but I don't think either can really be written off as shite signings. I'll never forget those fecking penalties.

To answer the question, I remember going a bit mental at Berba, Nani & Anderson and Rooney. Mata is quality too.

Anderson had nearly as much hype as Rooney, he was being called the 'New Ronaldinho' at the time and won the Golden Ball at the 2005 u17 youth world cup.

1. Anderson/Nani.
2. Rooney.
3. Mata.

Ronaldo would be top of the list if we counted from their debut on. Alan Smith sticks out in my mind too, probably because we were signing him from Leeds.

Sneijder
Thiago
Hazard

oh wait?

Really though Hazard and Suarez hurt me the most because i had been bigging them up for years to anyone who would listen

Cantona......... Nothing more to say

Andy cole, just a goal scoring machine at Newcastle and completely out of the blue!

Teddy sheering ham and veron ties in third for me, teddy because I'd long thought he was the only one who could fill Erica boots and seba as I'd long been an admirer and thought he would be the best player in the world here

Anderson can definitely be written off as a shite signing, arguably SAF's worst. Shame as he was my favourite player for his first season here. Unbelievable waste of potential.

1. Rooney - he looked an amazing talent from his debut and was clearly going to be a world star. To think of him coming here was exhilarating on every level.

2. Veron - At the time, we could not tempt the top players from Italy or Spain, so to think of Veron, one of the best midfielders on the planet coming here was almost surreal.

3. Ferdinand - Only defender who could have excited me more would've been Nesta. That he would be world class here was without doubt, the biggest surprise was that it took him a bit of time to show the very best of his ability.

My muppetism only really becomes excitable about those talents who are at the very top of the tree when coming here. Potentially brilliant players are exciting but not in the same way as that's more about developmental pride and watching us turn

So far they've managed a combined 13 years, 400 appearances and 15 major winners medals at the club. They've not exactly been flops...
